O presente trabalho teve por objetivos avaliar a composição de rizomas do lírio-do-bejo (Hedychium coronarium) e isolar e caracterizar seu amido, por meio de análises físicas e físico-químicas. A composição química dos grânulos de amido isolados dos rizomas também foi determinada, bem como o formato, tamanho, distribuição de tamanho de partícula por difração a laser, viscosidade de pasta em analisador rápido de viscosidade, poder de inchamento, índice de solubilidade em água, propriedade térmica por calorimetria diferencial de varredura e cristalinidade por difração de raios X. Observou-se que os rizomas apresentaram elevado teor de água e baixos teores de matéria graxa, carboidratos, cinzas, proteínas e fibras. Os rizomas de lírio-do-brejo apresentam-se inadequados para produção de amido, devido ao baixo teor de matéria seca (17,3%), com 21,97% de amido, bem como fibras longas e látex, que dificultam a extração do amido. Experimental parallel strand lumbers (PSLs) were manufactured from fast growing rotary peeled I-214 (Populus x euramericana) and I-77/51 (Populus deltoides) hybrid poplar clones veneer strands with melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF) adhesive. The results showed that hybrid poplar clones can be used in PSLs manufacturing. Physical and mechanical properties of PSLs were affected by clone types. The I-77/51 clone had better properties and was found to be more suitable for PSLs manufacturing compared to the I-214 clone. PSLs properties were higher than those of solid woods (SWs) and laminated veneer lumbers (LVLs) of the same poplar clones. This increase may be due to materials, densification as a result of high pressure use, and the manufacturing techniques. The degree of contribution of SWs properties to the PSLs properties was lower than that of LVLs. This indicated that factors other than SWs properties played more important roles in the strength increase of PSLs.

We report the preparation of hydroxyapatite in powdered form by aqueous reaction of calcium nitrate or hydroxide with phosphate ion at room temperature. With a slow maturation step of 48 h avoiding heat, the resulting products show large specific surface areas above 150 m2/g. Cellulose nanofibers with a size range of 5–100 nm have the potential to be a low cost renewable material that has application in a range of products. However, current chemical methods to produce crystalline nanofibers suffer from low yields and high chemical costs, while mechanical methods require high energy costs. Methods to lower the energy costs of the mechanical methods have not been well documented in the literature. A bleached softwood kraft pulp was processed using a mechanical dispersion mill and a homogenizer to produce cellulose nanofibers. Two different commercial enzymes were used to pretreat the wood fibers before the mechanical treatments. The resulting nanofibers were characterized by light microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and inverse gas chromatography. Results indicate that the dispersion mill does not affect the overall pulp fiber fibrillation, but does help prepare the sample for the homogenizer. Most fibrillation occurs after three passes through the homogenizer. The enzyme pretreatment has little effect on the size of the fibers, but does allow for higher solids to pass through the homogenizer without clogging. The dispersion component of surface energy of the resulting nanofibrils is impacted by the type of enzyme used. The measurement of acid–base properties proved to be challenging using current IGC experimental protocols.

The effects of solar radiations on physical properties and molecular structures of 200 nm polystyrene nanospheres (PSN) coated on silicon wafer were explored by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrometer. It is revealed the particles shape of PSN changed from spherical to dumbbell-like shape after solar irradiation. Reduction of the PSN size as much as 23.79% after 5 minutes exposure was also observed in PSN particles. We believed that some of the phenyl moieties of polystyrene broke down to facilitate carbon-carbon cross linkage bonds intra- as well as inter-PSN particles and were shown by ATR-FTIR spectrums. These results proven the shrinkage of PSN particles were caused by the change of the molecular structure of the irradiated PSN to be much more dense material.

We present a new thin-film solar cell structure in which the traditional transparent conductive oxide electrode (ZnO) is replaced by a transparent conductive coating consisting of a network of bundled single-wall carbon nanotubes. Optical transmission properties of these coatings are presented in relation to their electrical properties (sheet resistance), along with preliminary solar cell results from devices made using CuIn1-xGaxSe2 thinfilm absorber materials. Achieving an energy conversion efficiency of >12% and a quantum efficiency of ~80% demonstrate the feasibility of the concept. A discussion of the device structures will be presented considering the physical properties of the new electrodes comparing current-voltage results from the new solar cell structure and those from standard ZnO/CdS/Cu(In,Ga)Se2/Mo solar cells.

The technological effect of wheat fibre, as a healthy ingredient in which consumers are interested, was studied in surimi gel products. Three and six per cent wheat fibre with different particle sizes was added. Functional properties of wheat fibre, such as water retention capacity (WRC), swelling (SW) and fat adsorption capacity (FAC), were determined. Elastic modulus (G′) of surimi with 6% wheat fibre was lower throughout thermal gelling. Under scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), gel samples with added fibre presented uneven distribution of fibre. This induced the formation of a non-homogeneous protein net associated with lower gel strength, cohesiveness and water binding capacity (WBC). The sensory panel found no differences in appearance but differences in texture among samples containing different proportions and types of fibre. Fibre with large particle sizes protected surimi from loss of gel strength and hardness during freezing. There were very few variations during frozen storage of different samples.
