For decades, agriculture has been associated with production of essential food crops. At present, agriculture above and beyond farming includes forestry, dairy, fruit cultivation, poultry, beef keeping, mushroom etc. Today, processing, marketing and distribution of crops and livestock products etc. are all acknowledged as part of current agriculture. Thus, agriculture could be referred to as the production, processing, promotion and distribution of agricultural products. Agriculture is the backbone of economic system of a given country. In addition to providing food and raw material, agriculture also provides employment opportunities to very large percentage of population and a high potential for food security and poverty reduction. However, these potentials has remained largely untapped which has led to the dwindling performance of the agricultural sector both domestically and in the international trade over the years. The study contends that government's agricultural policies over the years in Nigeria recorded partial success, going by this fact the country still face problems of food security, malnutrition and hunger, low earnings from agriculture as the GDP from agricultural sector declines. This study covered the key issues on Nigerian agricultural policies especially as it concerns the formulation and implementation of agricultural policies and programmes as well as their achievements. The agricultural sector has a strong relationship with the economy; hence, the concern for agricultural policies and the economy. The functionalist theory was adopted for this study.

Casual work is increasingly becoming the norm of a global economy as companies undergo restructuring, privatization, concentration on core activities and modifications in work organization and technology. These factors certainly affect traditional employment relations and the exercise of freedom of association and collective bargaining rights inherent in them. Flexible work patterns are now becoming dominant in developing countries and this makes it more difficult to organize workers for collective representation. A fallout of globalization in Nigeria is the increase in CWAs. Workers in this form of work arrangements are subject to insecurity and little or no protection as labour legislation can seldom be effectively applied to them. Globalization is said to provoke the deterioration of working conditions in developing countries like Nigeria. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) statistics union membership though still significant in large work places, has decreased in almost all parts of the world in the last decade. The relevance of collective representation is not always obvious when work places are small or in activities where there is little experience of collective organization and representation of interests. These factors are leading to a widening representational gap in the world of work. Based on these assertions, this study tends to examine casual work arrangements and freedom of association in Nigeria. A labour market segmentation theory provided the conceptual framework.

Food security has become an issue of global concern in the recent time. Nigeria, with her huge endowed natural and human resources is not spared. The country also faces a looming food security crisis with a growing population that is increasingly dependent on imported foods. The once dominant subsistenceoriented farm economy is at risk of gradual marginalisation. Insecure land tenure, scarcity of funds and credit, labour scarcity despite overall high unemployment and stagnant technology have crippled its further development. Studies of food security and the right to food both offer important starting points in tackling the production, access and consumption of food; they do not provide routes for challenging and changing the gender-inequitable food systems. This study, therefore, examined Food sovereignty and how it could enhance the role of women in food security in Nigeria. The diffusion theory provides the conceptual framework for this study. The design is descriptive in nature and a secondary source was used to elicit information for the study.

The word marginalization is a social process of becoming or being relegated to the fringe of society. Marginalization at the individual level results in an individual's exclusion from meaningful participation in society. An example of marginalization at the community level is the marginalization of women. Women are excluded from the labour force and their work in the home is not economically valued and compensated. Feminists' theorists argued that women should equally participate in the labour force, both in the public and private sectors. Today, it is argued that women are still marginalized from executive positions and continue to earn less than men at upper management cadres. In this study, the concept of marginalization and women political participation is critically examined. It also examines the steps and procedures being followed in order to encourage women to participate in politics during the last democratic dispensation of the Jonathan administration; for example, the Women for Change Initiative and the Women Empowerment Programme. The study examines the problems faced by women during elections in Nigeria due to violence; harassment and electoral malpractices and the level of performance of various women elected into various offices.

The study analysed the effects of ethnic diversity on access to drinking water and electricity in Nigeria. Our analysis indicates that ethnic diversity at the sub-national level has reduced households' access to safe drinking water, but increased provision of electricity. The implication of the finding is that provision of targeted public goods are more prone to negative effects of ethnic diversity than non-targeted public goods. Ethnic diversity will increase provision of public goods due to increased lobbying by the various ethnic groups. The study recommends that the national government should provide targeted public goods in heterogeneous countries.

Various studies have been conducted on the impact of exchange rates on the performance of the manufacturing sector and how it influences growth in different climes of the world. These studies have examined; drawing out the relationship between exchange rate and macroeconomic performance, with respect to manufacturing output and its related variables. This study examined the impact of exchange rates on the performance of the Nigerian manufacturing sector using the independent variables of exchange rates, inflation rates, capacity utilization rate, the manufacturing sector's foreign direct investments, and imports over a period of 25 years (1990-2014). Unit Root test, Johansen co-integration test, Granger causality test and Error Correction Model were used to test for stationarity, long-run relationship, causal relationship, and the short and long run equilibrium relationship respectively. The empirical results of the study shows that a devaluation of the Naira has a negative impact on the performance of the Nigerian manufacturing sector as it was found that exchange rates has a negative significant relationship, long run relationship and causal relationship with the performance of the sector. It was also ascertained from the results that inflation rates(INF), and capacity utilization rates(CUR) have a positive significant relationship with the performance of the sector, while exchange rates, imports(IMP) and manufacturing foreign direct investment(MFDI) have a negative significant relationship with the performance of the Nigerian manufacturing sector. The results of the analysis showed that the independent variables have a significant relationship with the R2 at 64.5%.

Since the Independence era, elections in Nigeria have been characterized by high scale of electoral malpractices, money politics, electoral violence and the use of ethno-religious divide in order to influence the voting patterns of the electorates. Electoral violence is one of the strategies employed by Nigerian politicians during electioneering period. Desperate and power drunk politicians often sponsor unemployed youths and stark illiterates to carry out assaults on their perceived political opponents with a view to manipulating election results to their own advantage. This paper shall make an indepth analysis of electoral violence in Nigeria with particular focus on the fourth republic.

Young people who have the strength required to take up agriculture shy-away from the work, leaving it to an ageing and dying population of old farmers, the continuation of this will force us to wonder what the fate of agriculture would be in Nigeria. Agricultural development specialists and policymakers around the world are concerned with the fact that young people are not interested in agriculture, as agriculture is very crucial to the current economic status of Nigeria. A sample of 384 respondents from the population was drawn using multistage sampling method and 40 in-depth interviews. Five research questions were raised in the study and two hypotheses were generated and tested (at 0.05 level of significance) using the chisquare inferential statistical method. Data were collected using a well-structured questionnaire; the research design was a descriptive survey. While the theories used for this research are the social exchange and rational choice theory. The major finding of the research showed there is no significant relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics of young people and their level of involvement in farm practice, while there was a significant relationship between the benefits attached to farm practice and the level of students' involvement.

Industrial conflicts in organizations are inevitable due to disagreement between the employees and employers which can either benefit or harm the organization. For the efficacy of the employer, there should be very positive ties between employer and workers. This study therefore, focuses on the use of collective bargaining as an effective instrument for management of conflict in Store Product Research Institute, in the north central of Nigeria. The study made used of pluralist theory as frameworks and employs both qualitative and quantitative research techniques. The findings of the study shows that negotiating via the process of collective bargaining on the terms and conditions of employments were not satisfied to the employees in the way the management of the institution handle them. Therefore, a proactive collective bargaining procedural and substance rules are recommended for both parties to reach collective agreement.

One of the challenges facing private universities in Nigeria is the inability to retain highly competence academic staff. Heavy workloads, lack of adequate resources and an unfavourable work environment, all affects efficiency and productivity of the academic staff. The poor QWL can cause high stress levels, which may have detrimental effects on family life and the wellbeing of academic staff. Based on the above assertions, this study therefore examined QWL of academic staff in private universities, north central Nigeria. Theoretically, this study adopted the self and organizational theories. A sample size of 245 academic staff was purposively selected for the study. Development and Validation Scale was used to measure QWL among the selected academic staff. The finding indicates that, there was a disparity in terms of the academic staff socio-demographic features and QWL.The study concludes that in today era QWL is an important factor in determining academic staff satisfaction in private universities in north central Nigeria and if it is undermined it can affect the academic staff level of satisfaction adversely.

The problem of high manufacturing costs has led to the shutdown of many manufacturing companies in Nigeria. This study examines the relationship between cost reduction strategies and the growth of manufacturing companies in Nigeria using data from annual reports of 40 manufacturing companies quoted on the Nigeria Stock Exchange within the period of 2012-2016. 40 manufacturing companies were sampled purposively for this study. The study took changes in material cost, changes in labour cost and changes in administrative overhead as variables for cost reduction strategies while changes in turnover as the variable for Growth. Correlation analysis was conducted to determine the association cost reduction strategies and growth while, regression analysis was used to determine the impact of cost reduction strategies on the growth of manufacturing companies. Results showed a positive significant relationship between cost reduction strategies and growth of manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study recommends that manufacturing companies should implement value analysis in order to reduce material costs and the implementation of cost reduction strategies in all manufacturing companies in Nigeria.

The elevation of Science and scientific knowledge above other disciplines and knowledge all over the world is not without reason or justification. Science has made life easier for people. It has reduced the level of superstition. Above all, it has made the world a global village. However, it has come with its own challenges. In a world dominated by science and technology, can Philosophy, an arts discipline, play major roles in the development of a nation? Is Philosophy still relevant in the development of a modern society? These and other related questions are answered in the affirmative in this paper. The paper argues that Philosophy has crucial roles to play in the development of a nation. Therefore, whatever science must have achieved should be complimented with the values inherent in philosophy that this paper examines. The methodology Adopted Is A Critical Analysis.

Casualization refers to the systematic replacement of full-time and part-time staff with staff employed on an ad hoc basis. Regular work is not provided but the casual worker is expected to be available when required. Theoretically, casualization leads to the reduction of an organization's operational costs by increasing the ease with which workers can be included and excluded from the workforce. Therefore, a casual worker is a worker on a temporary employment contract with generally limited entitlements to benefits and little or no security of employment. The main attribute is the absence of a continuing relationship of any stability with an employer, which could lead to their not being considered "employees" at all. Casual workers differ from other non-permanent workers in that they often possess fewer rights and less protection). A plethora of terms have been deployed to define and account for the growth of this type of irregular employment contract. For example, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has used terms like disguised employment or triangular employment relationship to define the emergence of subcontractors , independent contractors, home-based workers and all manner of "in-formalised" work. Based on this argument, this study tends to examine the different forms of work as well as the different conditions of work in a neo-liberal market. The paper was guided by the neo-liberal theory.

Today, around three-quarters people affected by poverty live in countries whose economies are dominated by the natural resources sector; this leads to the weakening of state structures and the destruction of the environment, and it can give rise to or exacerbate social conflict. Political democracy is a key ingredient in Africa's regeneration or renaissance. Without political democracy, our societies are condemned to be ruled by self-appointed dictators. The broader progressive movement, including the labour movement, has a crucial role in fighting for political democracy in Africa. It is important that we root out corruption, nepotism and create conditions for popular participation to flourish. Good governance is not a luxury but a necessary condition for open, participatory, accountable and democratic governance. Studies of good governance in Nigeria have not adequately addressed how the role of the labour movement in a democratic society can bring about good governance. This study, therefore, examined the role of the labour movement in promoting good governance in a democratic society like Nigeria. The functionalist theory provided the conceptual framework while the Secondary data collection method was used to elicit information for the study.

The most popularly used method of estimating the parameters in a linear regression model is the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) Estimator. This estimator is considered best when certain assumptions are satisfied. However, when any of these assumptions fail there is a need for other estimators. In this article, we proposed a new estimator that can handle jointly the violations of three of these assumptions which include multicollinearity, outliers, and an auto-correlated error term. Three estimators were combined to form a Generalized-Ridge-Lad estimator. We compared the performance of the new estimator with some of the existing estimators in terms of their mean square error. The proposed estimator (GLSRIDGELAD) perform consistently better than other estimators when the three problems exist.

The ordinary least square (OLS) estimator suffers a breakdown in the presence of multicollinearity. The estimator is still unbiased but possesses a significant variance. In this study, we proposed an unbiased modified ridge-type estimator as an alternative to the OLS estimator and the biased estimators for handling multicollinearity in linear regression models. The properties of this new estimator were derived. The estimator is also unbiased with minimum variance. A real-life application to the higher heating value of poultry waste from proximate analysis and simulation study generally supported the findings.

The aim of this work is to measure and determine the awareness on abortion and its legality amongst youths in Nigerian Universities. The undergraduate students of some selected universities in Nigeria constituted the study population. These were male and female undergraduate students across the faculties and departments of the schools. The study made use of questionnaire as the source of data collection. A total of 587 questionnaires were administered and analysed. Findings from this study supported literature on the knowledge of undergraduates on abortion. It further revealed that awareness of legal provisions guiding abortion in Nigeria was low, as only 28.3% of the respondents were aware of the criminal and penal code laws relating to abortion. It is recommended that the schools should include education of legal stance on abortion in the curriculum. Also, the undergraduate students should be educated on mortality resulting from abortion to boost the development rate of the country.

This paper sought to advance alternative health care financing for the
attainment of universal health coverage (UHC) in Nigeria considering the widening inequality, dwindling government spending, and non-inclusive health insurance scheme in the country. An adoptive narrative review of existing literature and authors’ experiences and observations of the health care financing system was used to develop an overview of the health care financing system in Nigeria. The results showed
that Nigeria has a long way to go in attaining universal health coverage considering
her high burden of disease and low health care expenditure, especially in comparison with Africa and similar countries across the globe. The results further showed that out-of-pocket spending dominates health care expenditure in Nigeria, and that the only way to curb heavy reliance on unsustainable and inequitable health care financing is to encourage risk-pooling of resources. This article, therefore, argues that alternative health care financing through effective community partnership is a necessity to achieving health for all.

Globally, youth participation in agriculture has been perceived as one of the vital keys for the revitalization of the economy of many countries. Several studies have focused on the different ways of encouraging youth participation in agriculture. However, little attention has been given to the awareness and the willingness of the youths to participate in agriculture. This study, therefore, examined, among other things the willingness of the youths to participate in agriculture especially among undergraduate. Functionalist theory was employed as the framework, while descriptive survey design was used. Structured questionnaire was administered on 200 students purposively selected from some private universities in Nigeria. The study revealed that majority (79.5%) of the respondents was aware of the need for youths to participate in agriculture. A majority (79.5%) of the undergraduates studied were not willing to participate in agriculture, (68.5%) of the respondents were also not willing to attend seminars to encourage youth participation in agriculture. Agriculture makes one dirty (50.5%) accounted for the major reason for the unwillingness of the undergraduates to participate in agriculture followed by laziness (25.0%). There is a need to reorient Nigerian undergraduates and the youths in general on the importance of their participation in agriculture.

Gender inequality of women participation in agricultural production has become a worrisome discussion in the present dispensation. This is because women constitute large portion in agriculture business. The study therefore examines this issue, stressing on the extent of women's participation in agriculture. The highest frequency of women that engage in farming all year round is 48 (30.0%), 44 (27.6%) respondents engage in farming activities half a year, 35 (21.8%) engage quarterly in a year. While cultural practices 36 (22.5%) form the highest causes of gender inequality and women's participation in agricultural production in Warri South Local Government Areas of Delta State, using data collected through questionnaire interview from 160 subjects. The study reveals that gender inequality of women in agricultural participation has considerable impact on the production process.

A profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed if we are to nourish today's 795 million hungry and the expected 2 billion people by 2050. Aside from hunger and malnutrition, food insecurity results in a wide range of problems such as health, environmental degradation, and a high rate of crime. When food security improves, most facets of life improve as well. While most Nigerians engaged in activities outside the agricultural sector, the country is in danger of being engulfed in a food crisis. Improving agriculture and food security (being able to produce enough food to sustain families and communities year after year), is a herculean task for the Omu-Aran community. There are no incentives for women to engage in commercial agriculture. Based on the above, this study tends to examine the role of women in proving food security and how this could help in the eradication of hunger in the Omu-Aran community in Kwara State. It argues that women have more restricted access than men to productive resources and opportunities including land, livestock, inputs, education, extension and research services, and financial services. Closing this gender gap would give an important boost to agricultural productivity and output, and in bringing agricultural yields similar to those of men, government at all levels, as well as corporate and financial establishments, must commit a large chunk of resources towards motivating women farmers. Role theory provides the theoretical framework for the study. The design for the study was both descriptive and exploratory. A two-stage sampling consisting of purposive and simple random techniques were used to select the respondents. The sample population comprises 35 food crop farming households in the Omu-Aran community. A structured interview was used to elicit information on the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. Twenty-five in-depth interviews were conducted. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively while qualitative data was content analyses.

The rural areas in Nigeria have become notorious with all kinds of crime. Inadequate amenities such as good roads and communication infrastructure in rural areas in Nigeria have made it difficult for the Nigeria Police to effectively detect and prevent crimes in rural Nigeria. It is consequent on these escalations of criminal activities that rural communities in Nigeria have evolved community policing to protect their neighbourhoods. This article presents the benefits of using qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection to unravel the potentials inherent in informal crime prevention and control in rural localities in Nigeria. The social capital theory was used to bring out the benefits of community participation in crime control in rural Nigeria. Findings from the study indicated high theft cases as common crime in rural Nigeria. Youths were observed to constitute greater percentage of suspects at police stations for crime. Unemployment and poverty among the rural populace especially youths were responsible for these criminalities. The absence of social infrastructure, inadequate police presence and government support to unemployed youths made the crime situations worse in rural areas. There was low level of community interactions with the police in crime prevention and control in rural Nigeria. The study recommended increased police-public partnership in crime prevention and control in rural Nigeria.

Employment strain at work, hierarchical dedication and job satisfaction among employees have, as of late, become the general wonder that specialists are currently eager to contemplate. The quintessence of each organization's work is evolving as it is driven by rapid, creative developments, globalization and monetary interest for improved operational skills. These progressions also benefit both individuals and organizations as they appear to result in increased work pressure and decreased job satisfaction. Based on the assertions therefore, this study examined employment strain and job satisfaction in Nigeria. Employment strain model provided the conceptual framework. The designs were descriptive and exploratory, a qualitative methodology and secondary method of data collection were used to generate information. The study revealed that employment strain has immediate negative impact on job satisfaction. It indicates a conflict of interest between the employer, who wants the employee to work hard, and the employee, who wants the compensation with the minimum effort required. Employment strain has been seen as an antecedent of job satisfaction, which can be induced by work overload, competition, self-esteem and impossible responsibilities; high employment strain has created negative psychological effects (depression), physiological effects (headaches, heart disease) and behavioral effects (absenteeism, substance use) on employees; also a depreciation of job satisfaction will have an effect on the organizational engagement, which will have an impact on the efficiency of their jobs.

The problem of domestic violence is not new to African societies. This study focused on
the remote causes and implications of domestic violence among rural women. The study adopted
a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The respondents were
selected using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Findings revealed that 82.3% of
the respondents agree that the economic dependence of women on men is among the major causes
of domestic violence, while 52.3% of respondents believe that their communities encourage and
tolerate some abusive behavior. A total of 61.5% of the respondents posit that religious and
traditional beliefs aid the persistence of domestic violence. On the implications of domestic
violence, 84.6% of the respondents agree that children of domestic violent homes will model their
behavior according to their experiences. The X2 value of 13.437 is significant at 3.841 and shows
that domestic violence has a serious psychological implication on women. Lack of authorities to
report cases of violence to and fear of the consequences of such reports prevented many of these
rural women from seeking help when they were abused. This study posits that advocacy groups
should employ more practical and appropriate communication mechanisms peculiar to each rural
area. Specifically, the use of indigenous languages to form songs, playlet, and proverbs to
communicate the implications of domestic violence against women in their communities should
be encouraged. Community and women leaders should ensure that women who report cases of
domestic abuse are adequately protected from the perpetrators. In doing this, they are able to accept
the sensitization processes rather than disregard them or term them ‘western’.

ABSTRACT
The climate is changing, the effects are already being felt, and human activities are a principal cause. While the reality of climate change can no longer be doubted, the magnitude of consequences and most especially for health can still be reduced. Consideration of the impact of climate change can help political leaders move with appropriate urgency. Climate change endangers human health, affecting all sectors of society, both domestically and globally; study has shown, that diseases do not respect international boundaries. Impacts in one location, such as infectious diseases, epidemics or population displacements caused by droughts or rising sea levels, quickly spread across national borders. If the current climate change and warming trends remain uncontrolled, humanity will face more injury, disease and death related to natural disasters and heat waves; higher rates of food-borne, water-borne and vector-borne illnesses; and death that is more premature and disease related to air pollution. Moreover, in many parts of the world, large populations will be displaced by rising sea level, and many others will be affected by drought and famine. As glaciers melt, the hydrological cycle shifts and the productivity of arable land will change. Prevention is the absolute best policy. Therefore, this study tends to conceptualize the relationship between climate change and human health in Nigeria. This study is guided by the Anthropogenic Global Warning (AGW) Theory and the Human Forcing Theory of Climate Change.
Key words: Climate Change, Global Warming, Ultra Violet (UV) Radiation, Human Health and Greenhouse Gases.

As human being we live in an organized word. Organizations of one form or another are necessary part of our society and solve many important needs. Organization is a dominant component of contemporary society. They surround us; we are born in them and usually die in them. Our life space in before is filled with them, they are just about impossible to escape. All organization has some function to perform and some incentive for their existence and for their operations. The goals of an organization determine the nature of its outputs and the series of activities through which the outputs are achieved.
Despite the differences among various organizations, there are some common factors in any organization, people, objectives, structure and management. It is the interaction of people in order to achieve objective which form the basis of an organisation. Some form of structure is needed by which people‟s interactions and efforts are coordinated. Some process of management is required by which the activities of the organization and the efforts of its members are directed and controlled towards the pursuit of this objectives. There are two types of organizations which are informal and formal organizations

There are divergent perspectives on the effect of the activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria. This study examined fundamentalism and socio-economic development in the North-Eastern zone of Nigeria with particular reference to the Boko Haram movement. Social Movement Theory was employed as theoretical framework for explaining the implication of Boko Haram insurgency for socioeconomic development of Northeast Nigeria. Secondary data were collected to elicit information for analysis. Boko Haram as a sect had resorted to the use of violence. This study shows that the rise in radical movements is mainly explainable by poor socio-economic infrastructures, poor governance and poverty that catalyse rapid increase in the membership of the group.

Compensation is a complex and controversial subject. Researchers, academicians and consultants have devoted much time and efforts to understand the innumerable factors that underlie top management compensation. Of more importance to this study is how compensation imparts on firms’ performance. For some time now, executive compensation has been a matter of concern to corporate policy makers. Studies have shown that compensation is one of the most important strategies in human resource management; as it influences the productivity and growth of organizations. There is also a public outcry that insurance companies in Nigeria do not settle claims promptly; and in most cases only with the intervention of the regulatory bodies. There are many published issues on compensation that focus on organizational differences; there is little on whether compensation has any significant linkage with performance. Besides, improvement of corporate governance standards has been at the forefront of inter...

This is because women constitute large portion in agriculture business. The study therefore examines this issue, stressing on the extent of women’s participation in agriculture. The highest frequency of women that engage in farming all year round is 48 (30.0%), 44 (27.6%) respondents engage in farming activities half a year, 35 (21.8%) engage quarterly in a year. While cultural practices 36 (22.5%) form the highest causes of gender inequality and women’s participation in agricultural production in Warri South Local Government Areas of Delta State, using data collected through questionnaire interview from 160 subjects. The study reveals that gender inequality of women in agricultural participation has considerable impact on the production process.

A majority (79.5%) of the undergraduates studied were not willing to participate in agriculture, (68.5%) of the respondents were also not will...

The study of national development occupies a seemingly contradictory, but nonetheless possibly true position within industrial sociology. From classical time to the present, it has had a central place in the minds of theorists concerned with the transition toward more advanced political, social and economic development. At the same time, familiarity with the concrete historical experiences of countries in the „underdeveloped‟ world has remained a tangential preoccupation. This is especially true with regard to the actual dilemma faced by nations attempting to break away from their past and move toward national development. Nigeria has been facing a number of developmental challenges ranging from insecurity, prolonged workers‟ strike, infrastructural deficit, unemployment, political crisis, etc. which has remained as major obstacles to national development. Industrial sociology as an academic discipline is a viable instrument for national development, since it disseminates knowledge ...

ABSTRACT The climate is changing, the effects are already being felt, and human activities are a principal cause.

Keywords: Election, Electoral Violence, Electoral Security. INTRODUCTION

The study analysed the effects of ethnic diversity on access to drinking water and electricity in Nigeria. Our analysis indicates that ethnic diversity at the sub-national level has reduced households’ access to safe drinking water, but increased provision of electricity. The implication of the finding is that provision of targeted public goods are more prone to negative effects of ethnic diversity than non targeted public goods. Ethnic diversity will increase provision of public goods due to increased lobbying by the various ethnic groups. The study recommends that the national government should provide targeted public goods in heterogeneous countries.

One of the key features of industrial restructuring in the current globalized market is the increasing polarization in employment conditions and a growing differentiation in the workforce. One method employed by firms in their attempt to stay competitive through increased flexibility in the production process, is the “casualization” of employment. This includes part-time workers, seasonal workers, home workers and subcontracted workers. Globalization is often equated with growing integration of national economies. In the sphere of economics, globalization is reflected in the increasing acceptance of free markets and private enterprise as the principal mechanism of promoting economic activities. Labour restructuring can take different forms in different countries. One prominent aspect in the last two decades has been a process of casual employment, in the sense of an increase in the proportion of employees classified as “casual”. This study therefore examines casual employment and it...

The emergence of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) is a major catalyst and a key success factor for the development, growth and sustenance of the Nigerian economy. Most government and business circles have come to recognize the importance of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) and have consequently agreed that their growth constitutes one of the corner stones of economic developmen., It is on the basis of this that the study of financing of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in Amuwo Odofin Local Government of Lagos state is being embarked upon. The study also examines how government and other agencies finance SMEs in Amuwo Odofin Local Government area of Lagos State.. The study was guided by network theory. The major concern of the theory is the objective pattern of ties linking the agencies, individual and group of the society. The agencies in this study include banks, cooperative societies, and government, among others.Quatitative and qualitative method was u...

Childlessness has major psychological and social implications for affected persons, especially in settings where fertility is highly valued. While a number of studies have documented how childlessness is perceived in these societies and the multitude of adverse consequences suffered by affected individuals, studies have not made a clear distinction between voluntary and involuntary childlessness in these settings. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to elicit information on socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents, socio-cultural implication of childlessness on married couples, causes of childlessness on married couples, perception of married couples towards childlessness, and effects of childlessness on married couples and what are the copying strategies adopted by these childless couples from the selected Yoruba communities, the study explores both voluntary and involuntary childlessness. Findings show that not having children, whether voluntarily or not, contribu...

This ...

The use of casual workers has been on the increase. It has spread across industries from manufacturing to services and other occupations, including construction workers, registered nurses, bankers, information technologists, and so on. The number of companies using casual workers is on the increase as global competition increased and the urge to cut down on costs of undertaking businesses in order to remain competitive rises. In the past three (3) decades and beyond, there has been a worldwide upsurge in the number of organizations that use or employ casual workers. This has been attributed to economic uncertainty or turbulence. In recent decades there has been a dramatic increase in casual jobs due to such factors as: massive unemployment, globalization, the shift from the manufacturing sector to the service sector and the spread of information technology. These changes have created a new economy which demands flexibility in the workplace and, as a result, caused the decline of the...

The design is descriptive in nature a...

Casualization refers to the systematic replacement of full-time and part-time staff with staff employed on an ad hoc basis. Regular work is not provided but the casual worker is expected to be available when required. Theoretically, casualization leads to the reduction of an organization’s operational costs by increasing the ease with which workers can be included and excluded from the workforce. Therefore, a casual worker is a worker on a temporary employment contract with generally limited entitlements to benefits and little or no security of employment. The main attribute is the absence of a continuing relationship of any stability with an employer, which could lead to their not being considered “employees” at all. Casual workers differ from other non-permanent workers in that they often possess fewer rights and less protection). A plethora of terms have been deployed to define and account for the growth of this type of irregular employment contract. For example, the Internationa...

International countries and organizations play significant roles during election processes in new and emerging democracies (and in countries hoping to be seen as democratic). The roles and impact they may have become, particularly interesting during situations, where the electoral process develops into “an electoral crisis”. Many such crises have occurred over recent years. The modern history has provided many eloquent examples of use of practice of double standards in all international policy. First, it concerns ambiguity of approaches of influential western powers and the leading international organizations as to the estimation of election campaigns, and other democratic processes taking place in many African states including Nigeria. Elections in countries where the ruling political regime is pro-western, the international observers recognize that elections meet the European and international standards. On the contrary if a ruling regime or the winner of election has no pro-weste...

The word marginalization is a social process of becoming or being relegated to the fringe of society. Marginalization at the individual level results in an individual’s exclusion from meaningful participation in society. An example of marginalization at the community level is the marginalization of women. Women are excluded from the labour force and their work in the home is not economically valued and compensated. Feminists’ theorists argued that women should equally participate in the labour force, both in the public and private sectors. Today, it is argued that women are still marginalized from executive positions and continue to earn less than men at upper management cadres. In this study, the concept of marginalization and women political participation is critically examined. It also examines the steps and procedures being followed in order to encourage women to participate in politics during the last democratic dispensation of the Jonathan administration; for example, the Wome...

A fall-out of globalization in Nigeria is the increase in CWAs. Workers in this form of work arrangements are subject to insecurity and little or no protection as labour legislation can seldom be effectively applied to them. Globalization is said to provoke the deterioration of working conditions in developing countries like Nigeria. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) statistics union membership though still significant in large work places, has decre...

Studies of Godfathering and political patronage in Nigeria have not adequately addressed how these patronage has remained an important aspect of the political and economic powers of the state. The promise of the early years of independence has given way to mismanagement, personal or group aggrandizement by the ruling elite at the expense of the ordinary citizens. There is high level of corruption which has driven many Nigerians in to absolute poverty. People are adversely affected through bad and corrupt governance as such it has made meaningful development elusive. The major challenges confronting political office holders in contemporary democratic regime in Nigeria at local government level is sustainability of status attained at post public office era because, the thought of the people is that while holding public office there must be drastic change in socio-economic status of the occupants because of huge financial rewards attached to the office. But after leaving office, the sustenance of that status becomes a major challenge to these leaders at grassroots level because of the belief that there is a curse that forbidding public office holders at council level to hold on their wealth after leaving office. Abstract The aim of this work is to measure and determine the awareness on abortion and its legality amongst youths in Nigerian Universities.

A profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed if we are to nourish today’s 795 million hungry and the expected 2 billion people by 2050. It argues that women have more restricted ...

Complementarities and partnerships forged within and across these groups of differing power are also necessary to achieve long term sustainable development. Therefore, this study will examine the interaction between human social capital and sustainable economic development Nigeria.

ABSTRACT
The core aspects of how sociological Explanation and Interpretation characteristically operate are especially visible in what may be called “traditions of inquiry”. Such traditions form around substantive debates such as why capitalism emerged in Europe, or how social background affects individual performances on IQ tests. In debates like these, both differing approaches and contending paradigms account come into confrontation. There are three types of Paradigms in sociology; Social fact paradigms, social definition and social behavioural paradigms. These paradigms have their various methods or an approach through which social reality is constructed. Constructing social reality or giving sociological explanation of any social situation does not present much difficulty, but the question of which explanation is scientific, or which paradigm(s) will represent a true knowledge or adequate analyses of social phenomena is the major problem of sociology. The study examines the different sociological paradigms (positivism and phenomenology) and the various explanations that emerge from them. It will also examine other sociological explanations that either belongs to the above two paradigms or does not fit into any of the paradigms. Also, attempt is made to identify some of the problems or limitations of sociological explanation-mostly the problems of conceptualization of social facts, problems of values or ideologies, subjectivity of action, measurement and relativism.
