High speed digital subscriber line (DSL) systems transmit signals that overlap in spectrum with the bands used for radio communications. AM broadcast stations and radio amateur transmitters result into electromagnetic interference impairing the DSL-receiver. For discrete multitone systems, windowing, in combination with radio frequency interference (RFI) cancellation has been proposed to make DSL-transceivers robust to radio ingress. This paper shows how windowing has an equivalent implementation by means of the so-called per tone equalization

A method for estimating attributes of a transmission line (LP), said method comprising the steps of: making measurements reflectometry said transmission line, determining from said measurements reflectometry parameter dispersion 1 port of said line transmission is a base reference impedance (Zref), estimating a characteristic impedance (Z0) of said transmission line, wherein said method further comprises the steps of: converting said dispersion parameter of one port from said base impedance reference to a base of characteristic impedance estimated, thereby producing a second parameter scattering port 1 with reflections from the proximal end waste, determining a time zone wherein said reflections of the proximal end residuals are locked, neutralizing the contribution of said time zone in the process of estimating said attributes s of said transmission line.

Different combinations of echo cancellation (implemented partly in the frequency domain and partly in the time domain, see [1], [2]) and equalization are considered for DMT-based ADSL modems. Computational complexity is compared for schemes applying first equalization and then echo cancellation or vice versa. It is demonstrated how time/frequency domain echo cancellation can be combined with so-called per tone equalization, leading to optimal capacity, generally not achievable with time domain equalization.

Abstract—A preprocessing algorithm is proposed to visualize the time-domain one-port scattering parameter of a subscriber line measured at the Central Office. To overcome the high line attenuation and the mismatch between the line and the measurement instrument, a preprocessing algorithm is developed to obtain numerically the impulse response of the one-port scattering parameter. The algorithm will search for a quasi-optimal base impedance for the scattering parameter; then, it will de-noise and de-alias the impulse response and will provide an estimate for the first meaningful significant reflection. Index Terms—Impulse response, scattering parameter, time alias, time-domain reflectometry (TDR), transmission lines. I.

An alternative receiver structure is presented for discrete multitone (DMT)-based systems. The usual structure consisting of a (real) time domain equalizer (TEQ) with a (complex) 1-taps frequency domain equalizer (FEQ) per tone, is modified into a structure with a (complex) multitaps FEQ per tone. By solving an MMSE problem, the SNR is maximized for each individual tone. This always results in a larger bitrate while complexity during data transmission is kept at the same level. Moreover, the per tone equalization is shown to have a reduced sensitivity to the synchronization delay.

For the FFT block in a DSL modem (DMT based), even 32 bits proves to be too much, and a custom number of bits can be used. This in turn will lead to savings in area and power on the ASIC implementation. Several techniques were considered for reducing the number of bits.

The lift-off of DSL (digital subscriber line) has urged the subscriber line testing equipment manufacturers to extend their narrowband POTS (plain old telephony service) testheads towards DSL. The local loop, which connects the customer premises (CP) to the central office (CO) and which has been designed for POTS voice-band transmission, may have numerous impairments with respect to DSL. Some impairments, such as load coils, have to be detected, located, and removed. Others, such as bridged taps, don't have to be removed, but can seriously impact the maximum achievable loop bit rate. The dream of every telecom operator is a testhead that can accurately estimate the loop channel capacity expressed in bit/s by means of single-ended measurements only. In this paper we will give an overview of local loop impairments and subscriber line testing methods, focussing on metallic line testing and especially time-domain reflectometry (TDR). The authors have developed a reflectometric loop ...

An improved optimization algorithm for the time domain equalizer (TEQ) is developed for discrete multitone (DMT) based asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL). In contrast with existing algorithms, our algorithm explicitly disregards the unused tones in the cost function as well as in the non-triviality constraint. Simulation results are presented for the upstream channel. It is shown that the achievable bitrate

A new physical model `VUB1' is proposed to characterize a metallic parallel wire or twisted wire pair. The VUB1 model is compared with a rational function in the s-domain and with the popular physical model `BTO' of British Telecom as described in the standards far Metallic Access Networks. The VUB model contains a limited parameter set and is linear and time invariant. Metallic cable characterization with physical models is compared with rational functions in the Laplace domain. A Maximum Likelihood Estimation framework is used in the frequency domain to identify the model parameters. The performance of the models is compared with a simulation directly based on measurements

Faced with fierce competition from cable operators, telephone companies are now aggressively investing in digital subscriber line technology with the objective of providing an economic broadband access alternative. However, high-bit-rate transmissions over the metallic access network is far from trivial. The subscriber loop predominantly consists of interconnection of twisted pair copper sections. This causes severe attenuation of the high-frequency components

In response to fierce competition, telecom service providers re-engineer their IT and telecommunications services environment in order to offer a wide range of new value-added services faster and more cost efficiently. These organizations are adopting a service-oriented paradigm in order to rationalize the OSS and BSS infrastructure, introduce self-service systems and manage 3rd party business-to-business interactions. This paper investigates how service-oriented principles introduced in the business domains can extend into the telecom services domain. An approach for telecommunications service creation in a SOA through service orchestration is detailed and illustrated by a use case for triple play (3P).
