Following an eighteen month email dialogue commencing in late 2012, in March 2014 Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Sadeq Hussaini Rohani -- one of the eminent Iranian religious sources of emulation (marjaʿ taqlīd) of Qom, Iran -- issued a fatwa (ruling) determining that the use of entheogenic plants and substances under the guidance of qualified experts is permissible (ḥalāl) for Twelver Shiʿi Muslims and therefore not forbidden (ḥarām) by the sharīʿa. This talk will briefly discuss the historical context and theoretical underpinnings which made such a momentous jurisprudential ruling from the seat of Iranian orthodoxy possible. It will offer a short biography of this leading dissident Iranian cleric himself, and also touch upon the pervasive presence of entheogenic plants and substances within Iranian culture and spirituality as far back as ancient antiquity: https://youtu.be/t4zYDjE2TRo

Reza Zia-Ebrahimi revisits the work of Fathali Akhundzadeh and Mirza Aqa Khan Kermani, two Qajar-era intellectuals who founded modern Iranian nationalism. In their efforts to make sense of a difficult historical situation, these thinkers advanced an appealing ideology Zia-Ebrahimi calls dislocative nationalism, in which pre-Islamic Iran is cast as a golden age, Islam is racialized as an alien religion, and Arabs become implacable others. Dislodging Iran from its empirical reality and tying it to Europe and the Aryan race, this ideology remains the most sophisticated and politically potent form of identity in Iran.

This autograph MS of the Arabic Bayān is mentioned by Denis MacEoin in Sources for Early Bābī Doctrine and History: A Survey (Leiden and New York: E.J. Brill, 1992), 85, and Appendix One (7th item under al-Bayān al-ʿArabī), 181. The autograph, however, does not go beyond chapter (unity/wāḥid) 9 and only consists of two leaves. One anomalous feature is that the first leaf vertically consists of chapters 1, 3, 4 and 5 with the second leaf (also vertically) running as chapters 6 then 2 and 7, 8 and 9. This incomplete codex MS of the Arabic Bayān was consulted for the 1940s lithograph edition of the text published in Iran (which was published alongside the haykal al-dīn/talisman of the religion with its incomplete commentary): a lithograph edition published on the basis of the handwritten transcription made by ʿAbdu’l-ʿAlī Azal (the son of Ṣubḥ-i-Azal) which was discussed here (Book 32, item v.), https://www.academia.edu/29688574/A_Preliminary_Survey_of_the_Cyprus_Bay%C4%81n%C4%AB_Corpus_Part_I_The_Works_of_the_B%C4%81b.

This article discusses the organizational hierarchy of the Bābīs during the period of Ṣubḥ-i-Azal's (d. 1912) concealment from the public and his residency in Baghdad between the years 1852 to 1863. It pursues an analytic historiographical and textual critical approach by mainly utilizing primary and secondary sources in Arabic, Persian and English belonging to both the Bayānīs (i.e. Azalīs) and the Bahāʾīs alike. First by offering some brief context, it will explain this organizational hierarchy of the Bābīs during the Middle Bābī period (1850-66), highlighting the role and function of the witnesses of the Bayān (shuhadāʾ-i-bayān). More importantly, it will introduce a hitherto unknown work (and primary source) of Ṣubḥ-i-Azal's from that era, namely the kitāb al-waṣīya (the Book of the Testament), wherein seven to eight prominent Bābīs of that period were appointed to the rank. The two presently known MSS of this work will be discussed, as well as extensively quoted in translation, with the individuals named in it identified. The sectarian narratives (with their conflicting authority claims) dividing the Bayānīs (i.e. Azalīs) and Bahāʾīs over the history of the period will be critically evaluated while also briefly revisiting the 'episode of Dayyān'. It will conclude by proposing the untenability of the terms 'Azalī' and 'Azalī Bābism'. This study supplements Denis MacEoin's two articles on the subject published during the 1980s.

This corpus of Babi texts are inclusive of the works of both Siyyid Ali Muhammad Shirazi, the Bab (d. 1850), as well as his successor Subh-i-Azal, the majority of whose transcriptions were made by Subh-i-Azal himself. In this first part those MSS of the works of the Bab in this collection are itemized and its contents briefly discussed.
