Lent’s (2003) Engineering Fields Questionnaire assesses major components of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and includes measures of self-efficacy, coping efficacy, outcome expectations, technical interests, and educational goals. These measures have demonstrated good internal consistency in previous research, but validation information is more limited for use with African American STEM students. This paper discusses a validation study of an adapted version of Lent’s Engineering Fields Questionnaire, entitled the STEM Fields Questionnaire, with a sample of African American undergraduate STEM students ( n = 526). Validating the STEM Fields Questionnaire for African Americans is particularly important given the role of cultural values and certain experiences in career development among this population. Seven factors resulted from an exploratory factor analysis conducted in the present study: engineering/technology interests, outcome expectations, self-efficacy, STEM coping, goal...

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in University College represent both breadth and depth of study. Admission requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree include a high school diploma or its equivalent; at least 12 units of transferable college-level course work with a minimum grade point average of 2.7 taken at another accredited institution; or at least 12 units of course work taken at University College with a minimum grade point average of 2.7.

The psychometric properties of Super’s Work Values Inventory–Revised (SWVI-R) were examined in a sample of 213 African American college students. Results indicated that the 12-values scales were as reliable and as valid in a sample of African Americans as has been demonstrated within a predominantly White college student sample. Values of coefficient a were similar to those found in White and normative samples, with a median a of.82 herein and medians of.82 and.84 in the normative and White college student samples. A three-factor higher order structure of the SWVI-R was found herein; the three factors were named secure work environment, motivation, and style of engagement. African Americans reported higher mean values scores than did White students but their rank ordering of values was very similar—lifestyle, work environment, and super-vision were most highly valued, and creativity was the least valued. Values scores were significantly and consistently correlated with ethnic identi...

Many clients requesting assistance in Career Centers are mismatched with their career due to issues of occupational choice. In addition, personality con-flicts with co-workers, lack of interpersonal skills, and the individual’s person-ality characteristics can affect vocational success. Theories of personality are incorporated into several theories of vocational choice and development (i.e., Holland, Roe) resulting in some attention to personality. Likewise, client per-sonality can affect the career counselor’s ability to intervene effectively to as-sist the client in making effective career choices and decisions. More direct attention to the impact of personality on an individual’s career and vocational success can enable the Career Center to increase the effectiveness of their interventions. This paper will discuss the methods for increasing the effective-ness of career counseling through the use of the Five-Factor Model of Person-ality into our therapeutic work with clients.

To continue as global science and technological leaders, the United States is motivated to create a diverse, engineering workforce. One way of diversifying the engineering workforce is to address the disparity of women engineers. Although concerted efforts to improve retention rates of women in engineering are ongoing, women have earned only 5.6% of all undergraduate engineering degrees, with only 1% attributed to African American women (NSF, 2015b). African American women are commonly included in racial or gender-focused studies on persistence; however, few studies assess the effect of multiple identities to persistence. This exploratory study examined the relationship of persistence, measured by intent to persist, to multiple identities (social, professional, and racial) of African American female engineering students. Forward regression analyses were conducted and results indicated that the participant’s mathematical identities were more salient to them than their racial or gende...
