Before the Inka and After the Inka: Cultural Lansdcapes and Sacredness in the Puna of Atacama, Chile The objective of the present study is to explore ideological aspects of towns of the late pre-Hispanic periods (900-1500 C.E.) located in the upper valleys of the Atacama, on the western slopes of the southern Andes, which are related to the tradition of the south-central Andean area. The surprising aspects of cultural continuity that exist among the present-day inhabitants of communities in this area permit the authors to interpret the material remains left by the pre-Columbian inhabitants. In this study, results are presented of fieldwork undertaken by the authors that pertain to the beliefs of older community members of the puna of Atacama. In particular, emphasis will be given to rituals related to the mountains and the transformations that came about with the incorporation of this region into Tawantinsuyu.

We incorporate Andean oral traditions and toponymic studies, framed within the broader constructs of "cultural landscape" theory. The instruments created to register and characterize different types of roads and paths are illustrated, as well as the integration of these data into a geographical information system (GIS)

This is the exhibit guide of a new permanent exhibition centered on the native peoples that inhabited Chilean territory from ancient times to the present. Named after the project itself, this exhibit is being installed in the newly built gallery and is intended to draw attention to the creativity and art of the societies occupying the different geographic regions and landscapes of this long country, from its northern desert to its semi-arid scrublands, fertile central valleys, dense forests and even to Easter Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Chilean territory was divided into a series of geo-cultural zones, each of them “countries” in their own right with their own cultural traditions that flourished over the ages. The display is organized around a few central concepts, starting with the diverse landscapes of Chile’s territories and the ingenuity with which its indigenous inhabitants have adapted to these sometimes extreme environments, and continuing with certain tech...
