Objectives Infants receiving care from neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can develop chronic problems and be transferred to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for on-going care. There is concern that such infants may take up a large amount of PICU resource, but this is not evidence based. We determined the impact of such transfers. Methods We reviewed 10 years of NICU admissions to two tertiary PICUs, which had approximately 12,000 admissions during that period. Results Sixty-seven infants, gestational age at birth 34.7 (IQR 27.1–38.8) weeks and postnatal age on transfer 81 (IQR 9–144) days were admitted from NICUs. The median (IQR) length of stay was 12 (4–41) days. The 19 infants born <28 weeks of gestation had a greater median length of stay (32, range IQR 10–93 days) than more mature born infants (7.5, IQR 4–26 days) (p=0.003). The median cost of PICU stay for NICU transfers was £23,800 (range 1,205–1,034,000) per baby. The total cost of care for infants transferred fr...

Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as potential electrode materials for next-generation energy storage devices. Cu3(BTC)2 (BTC = benzene tricarboxylate), also known as HKUST-1, is one of the most widely studied MOFs. In the present work, TCNQ (tetracyanoquinodimethane) doped HKUST-1, has been demonstrated as an efficient energy storage electrode material. The infiltration of TCNQ in HKUST-1 has resulted in the synthesis of a high surface area electrode material with significant electrical conductivity. TCNQ@HKUST-1 based electrode has delivered a high specific capacity of 208.8 mAh/g (751 C/g) at a current density of 2 A/g. An all-solid-state symmetrical device has been assembled using a polymer gel electrolyte, which has delivered energy and power densities of 70.5 Wh/kg and 0.83 kW/kg, respectively. Also, the device showed a maximum energy efficiency of 58.6% along with a long cycle life of 96% over 5000 successive charging-discharging cycles. The present system has yielded superior energy storage performance than most of the earlier reported MOF based electrodes.

More effective antibiotics are needed to overcome the problem of multidrug resistance. The antibacterial efficacies of three Zn-based nano metal-organic frameworks (nMOFs) - IRMOF-3, MOF-5, and Zn-BTC - were explored, both alone and as mixtures with ampicillin and kanamycin. When tested against , , , and , the nMOF/drug mixtures demonstrated synergistic (IRMOF-3/kanamycin) or additive (other nMOF/drug combinations) effects compared with the nMOFs or antibiotics alone. Zn-Based nMOFs can reduce the burden of the new discovery of antimicrobial pharmaceuticals by increasing the potency of existing antibiotics.

Introduction: During CVVH in liver failure minimal or no anticoagulation is used because of abnormal clotting and increased bleeding risk. But, circuits still clot. Methods: We investigated CVVH circuit life in children with acute liver failure over a 2 year period using prospectively stored electronic clinical data. All children had vascular access via a double lumen catheter placed in the femoral or internal jugular vein. The filter sizes were determined by body weight. Heparin anticoagulation, if used, was titrated to an ACT of 180-220 seconds. Results: 31 children in acute liver failure (ALF) received CVVH (17 male, median age 7.4 yrs, range 0.01-18). Of these 31 patients with ALF, 17 (54.8%) died. The number of filtration episodes was 98. The smallest double lumen venous access catheter used was 6.5 Fr (14%) and the largest 13.5 Fr (11%). The commonest filter used was HFO7 (63%). Each filter was used for (median) 22 hours (range 1-126). 52 filters were changed electively. Of th...

ABSTRACT Metal organic frameworks are a sub-class of coordination polymers and rapidly generating huge research interests in several technological areas. One of the emerging areas of their potential applications is the photovoltaics. The present study proposes the assembly of europium organic framework – gold nanoparticles nanocomposite thin film on silicon substrate. Microscopic, X-ray diffraction, surface area measurement and thermal studies have indicated the formation of the desired thin film. Spectral studies have been used to highlight their solid state optical property. Current-voltage studies have established semiconducting property of the above thin films.

Basolite Z-1200 is one of the most popular commercially available MOF for the gas storage applications. Pristine Basolite Z-1200 is an electrically non-conducting material. This research focuses to tap the potential of Basolite Z-1200’s unique porous structure for the adsorption and sensing of a pesticide. For this, the above said MOF has been treated with mineral acids (HCl) to make it electrically active. The protonated MOF solutions have been used to form conducting thin films on glass slides. Electrical measurements have indicated that the proton doping reduces the overall resistance of the MOF. Prepared thin films have been used to sense Mecoprop some in sample solutions. Conducting MOF thin films may find applications in environmental sensors, pre-concentration, solid phase extraction, electronic devices etc.

ABSTRACT Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been carboxylated and then immobilized with glucose oxidase (GOx) by amine coupling through EDC-NHS chemistry. These functionalized MWCNTs have been introduced into polyaniline matrix by electrochemical method. The different involved steps have been characterized with molecular and electronic spectroscopy. Prepared thin films preserved the enzymatic activity of GOx and their average electrical conductivity was measured as 3.78 × 10−1 S cm−1. Observed response time was 5 s and a linear pattern of current vs. concentration was recorded for 0.5–22 mM glucose.

ABSTRACT A nanocomposite of luminescent europium organic framework (EuOF) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been investigated for photoluminescence (PL) quenching based highly sensitive detection of trinitrotoluene (TNT). The nanocomposite 'EuOF/AuNP' has been synthesized by initiating the growth of EuOF in the presence of AuNPs. The successful synthesis of the product has been verified with the help of electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. EuOF/AuNP nanocomposite offers reproducible and stable measurements of TNT. The linear dynamic range of detection is 5-800 ppb with the estimated detection limit of 18 ppb. The presence of other closely related aromatic compounds such as phenol, o-cresol, toluene, benzene, nitrobenzene and nitrophenol do not influence the sensing of TNT.

Fluorescence-based molecular sensing and cellular imaging are commonly carried out with the application of organic dyes. Quantum dots (QDs) are now recognized as better tools because they are brighter, size tunable, and more photostable than dyes. Most of the proposed QD-based biosensing systems involve elements of known toxicity. The present work reports the functionalization of biocompatible InGaP/ZnS core-shell QDs with anti-bovine serum albumin (anti-BSA) to exploit them as fluorescent probes for antigen detection. Successful bioconjugation was characterized with the absorption and emission spectra showing blue shifts of around 40 and 30 nm, respectively. Gel electrophoresis and particle size distribution studies further confirmed the mass increment of QDs after their functionalization with anti-BSA. Surface plasmon resonance spectrometry has been used to study the affinity of QD-(anti-BSA) probes for bovine serum albumin (BSA). Photoluminescence quenching of the developed probe is observed in the presence of BSA.
