Opa1 participates in inner mitochondrial membrane fusion and cristae morphogenesis. Here, we show that muscle-specific Opa1 ablation causes reduced muscle fiber size, dysfunctional mitochondria, enhanced Fgf21, and muscle inflammation characterized by NF-κB activation, and enhanced expression of pro-inflammatory genes. Chronic sodium salicylate treatment ameliorated muscle alterations and reduced the muscle expression of Fgf21. Muscle inflammation was an early event during the progression of the disease and occurred before macrophage infiltration, indicating that it is a primary response to Opa1 deficiency. Moreover, Opa1 repression in muscle cells also resulted in NF-κB activation and inflammation in the absence of necrosis and/or apoptosis, thereby revealing that the activation is a cell-autonomous process and independent of cell death. The effects of Opa1 deficiency on the expression NF-κB target genes and inflammation were absent upon mitochondrial DNA depletion. Under Opa1 defi...

Abstract: This paper presents a proposal to tackle the design and development of user interfaces for groupware applications. This proposal includes important design and implementation issues of special relevance for this kind of interfaces. In particular, group awareness requirements in the development of groupware applications are addressed, both in the sense of the basic manipulation actions of the interface widgets, as well as in the sense of other kinds of group awareness in relation to the presence of actors, the roles they play in a concrete moment, etc. The design proposal we present is part of a complete development process (called TOUCHE) which defines a set of facets to describe Abstract Interaction Objects. These objects, at design level, provide the basis for the definition of Concrete Interaction Objects at implementation level within a software platform intended to facilitate the development of user interfaces for groupware applications. This way, we get an integral ap...

This paper proposes a model-driven approach for developing high-level software interfaces that allow developers to interact with wearable devices easily. These components hide the heterogeneity of the devices interfaces and provide developers with a simple and homogeneous way to interoperate with these digital peripherals. The use of this approach also allows reducing risks and development efforts.

At present, information regarding patents is usually represented and stored in large databases. Information from these databases is commonly retrieved in the form of files with a CSV- or XML-based codification but with little semantics that enable the inference of further relationships among patents. In these databases, each patent is associated with a technological field by a code for a hierarchical classification. Although the codes assume a hierarchical classification approach, inclusion/subsumption relationships are not explicitly specified such that computers can process them automatically. This paper presents an approach to automatically translate the hierarchies found in the patent classification codes into ontologies of concept hi-erarchies. This proposal also enables the automatic inference of implicit knowledge of patent information. A case study is presented to illustrate the applicability of the proposal.

The mismatch between the business requirements and the actual functionality of the delivered software application is considered to be a crucial problem in current software development. Solving this problem means to find out how to consistently place the software specification model on a previously developed business process model. If considering in particular the UML-based software design, we need to answer

— Groupware systems allow users to be part of a shared environment in order to carry out groupwork. Members of a group belong to organizations in which each fulfills general and specific enterprise objectives. This paper presents a modeling proposal specially devised for the study of CSCW (Computer-Supported Cooperative Work) systems and the subsequent development of groupware applications. This research work focuses on two specific models for the proposal: a conceptual domain model formalized through a domain ontology, and a system model built using a UML-based notation. The second stems from the first and each provides a Computation Independent View (CIV) with different objectives. Respectively, they allow a common vocabulary for knowledge sharing to be established, and organization functional requirements to be specified, particularly those concerning communication, coordination and collaboration.

Informatic systems play an important role in the society because are used in the majority of fields. The community of software researchers and developers devotes substantial efforts to determine how software systems can increasingly improve the environment in which they are deployed, for example, in medicine, business management, education, among other domains. But paradoxically these efforts do not correspond to those devoted to improving the environment of software development itself. There are insufficient proposals to streamline the software development process. The authors conducted an analysis of several proposals to improve the software development process in Cuba, propose how to address the problem based on the paradigm of Model Driven Architecture and make an assessment of the impact this may have on Cuban software industry.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a set of massively emerging technologies that aim to make our lives better. One of the most suitable application domains is healthcare and wellbeing, where IoT technologies can enhance living environments (ELE). IoT applications are deployed into an IoT ecosystem, which is supported by a specific architecture. The usual IoT architecture model has three different layers (Acquisition, Network and Application), where all the different IoT elements are organized. This architecture has been designed for general purposes, but the deployment of IoT healthcare applications supported by this architecture model exhibits important drawbacks. In particular, this architecture model does not consider IoT devices coexisting with wearables devices, which hinders the design of smart habitats. In this paper we present an IoT-aware architectural model for smart habitats with special emphasis on healthcare domain. The new architecture adds a fourth layer to the traditional I...

Many software systems are being developed to help with business processes, which typically involve a number of (human) tasks in achieving organizational goals. However, aligning a software system well with its intended business process has been challenging, since the tasks in a business process usually lacks formal definitions and can be performed via multiple different allocations of resources. In this paper, we propose a goal-oriented transformational approach to deriving use cases, as requirements on the software system, from a business process which is modeled in BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). In this approach, a business process is modeled not only in terms of the functionally-oriented BPMN but also non-functional business goals, and the target software requirements are also modeled in terms of functionally-oriented use cases together with non-functional requirements. Those tasks to be performed by a software system are transformed into use cases, in consideration ...

Good health is the result of a healthy lifestyle, where caring about physical activity and nutrition are key concerns. However, in today’s society, nutritional disorders are becoming increasingly frequent, affecting children, adults, and elderly people, mainly due to limited nutrition knowledge and the lack of a healthy lifestyle. A commonly adopted therapy to these imbalances is to monitor physical activity and daily habits, such as recording exercise or creating custom meal plans to count the amount of macronutrients and micronutrients acquired in each meal. Nowadays, many health tracking applications (HTA) have been developed that, for instance, record energy intake as well as users’ physiological parameters, or measure the physical activity during the day. However, most existing HTA do not have a uniform architectural design on top of which to build other applications and services. In this manuscript, we present system architecture intended to serve as a reference architecture f...
