Her current project “Mapping anti-colonial networks through literature. Transnational connections of African thinkers in the reconfiguration of space and thought (1950s - 70s)”, focuses on the connections between the editorial projects Mensagem (Lisbon), Présence Africaine (Paris and Dakar) and Black Orpheus (Ibadan).
She was a Visiting Fellow at the ASCL - African Studies Centre (U. Leiden, 2024) and the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence (U. Bayreuth, 2022/23 ay). At the ACM, she was also awarded Collaborative Funding for the Postdoctoral Working Group: “Digital Trans*formations in Africa: A Space for Intellectual and Material Capital” (Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, U.Bayreuth), which she coordinates and co-convenes with colleagues from UB and Humboldt U. Berlin.
Former Post-Doctoral Research Fellow of the FCT-ID project Afrolab: Building African Literatures. Institutions and Consecration inside and outside the Portuguese-Language Space 1960-2020, based at CLEPUL - Centre for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures (FLUL, University of Lisbon - March to September 2022). In 2021, she was a Member of the PNL Evaluation Team. She is a Member of the Editorial Board of Práticas da História, Associate Member of CREPAL - Centre de recherches sur les pays lusophones (Sorbonne Nouvelle Université, France); a member of the research group Áfricas (UERJ-UFRJ). In November 2019, she researched at CEM Eduardo Augusto Kwamba (ISCED-Luanda). She is also a team member of the FCT-funded Projects AFROLAB (UL) and WOMENLIT - Women’'s Literature: Memories, Peripheries and Resistance in the Luso-Afro-Brazilian Atlantic (CHAM, NOVA-FCSH). Member of the COST Action 18126 - “Writing Urban Places” (EU). Her research focuses on African editorial projects from the 1950s to the 1970s. She’s concerned with the mobility of objects, people and ideas through the transnational networks established within Africa, Europe and South America by negritudinists, Pan-African or anti-colonial writers and intellectuals in those decades, with special attention on the underrepresentation of women’s agency in the historical and academic narrations produced about and in those cultural environments.
She gained her PhD in Portuguese Studies (History of the Book and Textual Criticism) from NOVA-FCSH with the dissertation: "(Re)building Identity through Conflict: An Approach to African Literatures written in Portuguese (1961-74)". This dissertation was founded by FCT-IP and received an Honorable Mention for the Mário Soares Prize-EDP Foundation (2021). She holds a BA degree in Modern Languages and Literatures (Spanish and Portuguese, 2013) from the Università degli Studi of Turin, Italy. She holds an MA degree in Modern Languages and Literatures from the same university, with a dissertation on Angolan literature (2015).
She is interested in the circulation of printed materials, ideas and their agents, as well as in their reception, currently focusing on African editorial projects from the 1950s to the 1970s, with an emphasis on Angolan Literature. She is concerned with the mobility of objects, people and ideas through the transnational networks established within Africa, Europe, and Latin America by negritudinists, Pan-African or anti-colonial writers and intellectuals in those decades, with particular attention on the underrepresentation of female agency in the historical and academic narrations produced about and in those cultural environments. She endorses a decolonial, feminist and intersectional approach to academic research, writing and the arts, joining collective anticolonial and antiracist literary and artistic projects.

década de 70, relatos na forma de contos ou de diário que testemunham uma reflexão profunda sobre o regime salazarista, a vigilância da PIDE, o exílio que ambas viveram, a resistência e a guerra. Este

Those writings witness a deep reflection on the Salazarist regime, PIDE’s repression, the exile the two women experienced, resistance and war. This text, presented at AIL 2021 (La Sapienza, Roma), aims to reflect on the role of women, intellectuals, and guerrilla fighters in the liberation wars. It also dwells on the valorization of militant women in contemporary Angola, contrasting the male hegemony that has dominated the historical reconstruction of the anticolonial war in Angola for decades. Deolinda Rodrigues and Eugénia Neto – starting from divergent approaches and practices – used a hybrid genre in which literary writing is associated to historical narration of the vicissitudes from Angola and the continent in the 1960s.

This article dwells on reviews such as Mensagem (Lisbon), Présence Africaine (Dakar and Paris) and Black Orpheus(Ibadan) and on the transcontinental connections and international networks they established. While literature oftentends to be considered, by the European tradition, as an individual practice, this contribution will focus on the collectiveeditorial works that generations of young African intellectuals, strongly committed to the anticolonial movements and/or to Pan-African ideals, built through transnational connections in the 1960’s. The circulation of texts, authors, andtranslations between those reviews was deeply connected to a conception of art committed to the dislocation of theidea of center. Those projects addressed oral tradition, visual arts and claimed the dignity of these forms of knowledge.Despite often using the “Metropoles” as intellectual hubs, African epistemes, and their diffusion in and outside Africa,were central to the reflections of the above-mentioned editorial projects.

O artigo aborda os debates culturais levados a cabo, entre 1961 e 1964, na página literária «Artes e Letras» do jornal periódico A voz de Moçambique, com foco nas críticas à censura salazarista, à ideia de literatura moçambicana por contraste à literatura ultramarina e, enfim, ao racismo. Dar-se-á especialmente destaque a duas disputas. A primeira, sucessiva às declarações de Rodrigues Júnior sobre literatura ultramarina, em detrimento da existência de literatura propriamente moçambicana, gerou uma conhecida polémica que viu Rui Knopfli e Eugénio Lisboa contra Alfredo Margarido. A segunda, inicialmente publicada no jornal A tribuna, foi entre José Craveirinha e Sacadura Falcão, em que o escritor moçambicano desmontava as teses racistas, defendendo a dignidade cultural do homem negro e das tradições culturais não ocidentais

The first - originated from Rodrigues Júnior’s declarations on the existence of a literatura ultramarina, instead of Mozambican literature - resulted in a well-known polemic that opposed Rui Knopfli and Eugénio Lisboa to Alfredo Margarido.The second, that was initially published in the journal A tribuna, was between José Craveirinha and Sacadura Falcão. In that occasion, the mozambican writer desmantled racists thesis, defending cultural dignity of black people, as well as non-western cultural traditions

A Imbondeiro, nascida na Huíla e cuja história editorial foi até agora pouco estudada, teve uma grande atividade em Angola durante a sua existência, entre 1960 e 1965. O seu encerramento foi causado pela repressão da PIDE, a polícia política do Estado Novo. Com mais de uma dezena de coleções, e estando formalmente registada como livraria-distribuidora, chegou a ter uma ampla difusão e uma rede de distribuição no continente africano (em Angola, Cabo Verde e São Tomé e Príncipe), mas também no Brasil e em Portugal.

In the present essay, I examine the work and career of the Mozambican poet Noémia Carolina Abranches de Sousa Soares (1926-2002). It is well known that Sousa began her career publishing under the initials "NS" to confuse her identity with that of her brother (whose name was Nuno) and so obfuscate her gender; however, women are a constant element in her work. Beyond this, I argue that Sousa adopted a pioneering approach to gender, one deeply connected to the anti-colonial struggle, the fight for the rights of her people, and the African American imaginary. Indelibly linked to social, racial, and gendered subalternity, Mozambican women constitute in Sousa's oeuvre the personification of the struggle against the societal paradigms of the time.

Neste texto, traça-se um dos roteiros possíveis da circulação das ideias negritudinistas e pan-africanistas e dos impressos que as veiculavam entre a África e a Europa depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Destacar-se-á o papel das revistas Présence Africaine e Mensagem por entender-se que tais revistas foram representativas dos contrastes e tensões da época, assim como das disparidades geradas pela dominação colonial e as suas consequências em âmbito de produção e fruição cultural.

This contribution aims at elaborating on the ties between creativity, intended as the ability to create new meanings through literature, and politics, in the Angolan literary sphere of the 1960s. The dispute between Mensagem of Casa dos Estudantes do Império and Notícias do Imbondeiro went way beyond literary debate. Though centred primarily on current literary production and dissemination, both publications engaged in a heated debate on activism and anti-colonial struggle. Contradictions became thereof apparent. At the time, what was at stake was, in fact, a struggle on the part of a cultural elite on how to combine theoretical thought grounded in Africa, artistic creation (notably through the multiple representations of African imaginary), whilst setting an agenda for the boundaries of activism. The arguments of Carlos Ervedosa and Leonel Cosme, representing the two editorial projects and their contrasting positions, as much as the ones of Alfredo Margarido-who anonymously wrote essays on the Boletim of C.E.I.-, constitute in this paper a point of departure for the understanding of the cultural background of the Angolan and Portuguese 60s, their contradictions and ambivalences.

A trajetória da escritora são-tomense Alda Espírito Santo constitui uma oportunidade para pensar como múltiplas opressões (de classe, raça e género) foram experienciadas na época, assim como para repensar a marginalização destas intelectuais em relação aos colegas e companheiros de luta seus contemporâneos. Representa, ainda, um pretexto para pensar os limites da ideia de unificação das lutas que tem permeado algumas construções discursivas.

This essay approaches the literary production by female intellectuals who opposed Portuguese colonialism in Africa, recognising their active role in history, as well as the cultural and political processes that influenced their writing and its repercussions. Experiencing multiple forms of subalternity-of class, race and gender-women like Alda Espírito Santo, Alda Lara, Noémia de Sousa Deolinda Rodrigues and Manuela Margarido were committed to the creation of new ways of writing and forms of conceiving the world. Playing a fundamental role in the literary, political and cultural environment of the second half of the 20th century, they circulated in spaces in which they questioned male hegemony, discussing gender issues and exercising multiple forms of resistance. This article will consider how the demands of women in the process of political decolonisation have o en been reduced to the label of 'women's issues', the idea of unification of struggles having been privileged instead.

UIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020 Deolinda Rodrigues (1939-1968) foi uma poetisa, intelectual e guerrilhei-ra do MPLA na luta contra o colonialismo português em Angola. O seu diário foi publicado em 2003 sob o título Diário de um exílio sem regresso. Neste artigo, de-fende-se que a escrita de Deolinda constitui um acto de escrita da história, per-correndo eventos significativos de uma década de vicissitudes políticas, culturais e socias do seu país. O objectivo do presente ensaio é o de levar a cabo uma análise da questão da contemporaneidade na obra do autor angolano Pepetela (Artur Carlos Maurício Pestana dos Santos), a partir da base teórica de “Contemporâneo como intempestivo” elaborada pelo filósofo Giorgio Agamben.
Num contexto complexo como o de Angola em formação, numa realidade mergulhada nos problemas duma nação multi étnica e com um passado colonial marcado, a luta pela conquista duma identidade comum e da liberdade individual constituem umas das preocupações principais, unidas às complexas relações com o que permanece da cultura do colonizador.

The essay will consider some of the main problems related to the application of the Literary Canon to African Literatures in Portuguese Language and will focus on the particular case of the debate on the novel Yaka, written by Pepetela.
Cosmological and political differences from Europe, social identity and ethnical variety are the main fields which need to be explored, aiming to go through the cultural contrasts that stand on the core of Africa and to allow the European reader to have the tools to understand the message of the written text properly.
A short presentation of the Angolan Literature, with its linguistic plurality, will show how it has been used as a mirror of society and as a vehicle of the freedom utopias which held to the composition of a new nation after Independence: from Cordeiro da Matta to Raul David, from Luandino Vieira to Pepetela.
The considerations on the case of Yaka – and on the observation of the Angolan Literary Critic Luís Kandjimbo on the novel and its supposed “coloniality” -, will be useful tools to disclose the possible distortions of the message of literary works.
Kandjimbo appeals to the ontological specificity of the Angolan literary production and to its extended oral component to propose an alternative Canon to the European one, that on his own opinion uses the platonic heritage to create a totalitarian education on the basis on social reproduction. He opposes the model of a “cultural reproduction”, legitimated by the endogenous character of Angolan literature. Following this model, the Canon shall include all the writers (black, white and mixed ones) representing intrinsic factors and features historically related to the Angolan population and community.

Esta tese discute a construção identitária em contexto de conflito e as suas manifestações nas literaturas escritas em África ou por africanos, em língua portuguesa, entre 1961 e 1974. A tensão contínua entre propaganda colonial, sistema censório, perseguição política a intelectuais e escritores, assim como a entre as reivindicações autonomistas e independentistas manifestou-se, nesse período, em publicações a título individual e em projetos editoriais coletivos. Nas produções literárias impressas da época notam-se a influência do luso-tropicalismo e da ideia de missão civilizadora por ele veiculada, do pan-africanismo e das correntes negritudinistas, tal como o papel das circulações internacionais de ideias e de textos, onde se discutem as ideias de Angola, de Moçambique, mas também de Portugal. Discutem-se casos de censura e de condicionamento da atividade literária, dos temas, das ideias e da língua que exprime essas ideias. Discutem-se os projetos de escrita e de edição, nalguns casos alternativos e de alcance considerável. Discutem-se as vozes de alguns autores marcantes nesse processo, nomeadamente de Luandino Vieira, José Ramalho e José Craveirinha, Alda Espírito Santo, Manuela Margarido, Noémia de Sousa, Deolinda Rodrigues e Alda Lara, que tiveram um papel fundamental na formação e consolidação de imaginários africanos da época: analisar-se-ão essas produções como agentes ativos nas lutas anticoloniais e feministas, mas também em qualidade de textos em que confluem múltiplas opressões e subalternidades: questões de género, raça e classe.

Writing and editing projects are discussed, in some alternative cases of considerable scope. The voices of some outstanding authors in this process are discussed, namely the cases of Luandino Vieira, José Ramalho and José Craveirinha , Alda Espírito Santo, Manuela Margarido, Noémia de Sousa, Deolinda Rodrigues and Alda Lara, with a fundamental role in the formation and consolidation of African imaginary of the time: these productions will be analyzed as active agents in the anti-colonial and feminist struggle, but also as texts in which multiple oppressions and subalternities converge: issues of gender, race and class.

This contribution aims at elaborating on the ties between creativity, intended as the ability to create new meanings through literature, and politics, in the Angolan literary sphere of the 1960s. The dispute between Mensagem of Casa dos Estudantes do Império and Notícias do Imbondeiro went way beyond literary debate. Though centred primarily on current literary production and dissemination, both publications engaged in a heated debate on activism and anti-colonial struggle. Contradictions became thereof apparent. At the time, what was at stake was, in fact, a struggle on the part of a cultural elite on how to combine theoretical thought grounded in Africa, artistic creation (notably through the multiple representations of African imaginary), whilst setting an agenda for the boundaries of activism. The arguments of Carlos Ervedosa and Leonel Cosme, representing the two editorial projects and their contrasting positions, as much as the ones of Alfredo Margarido-who anonymously wrote essays on the Boletim of C.E.I.-, constitute in this paper a point of departure for the understanding of the cultural background of the Angolan and Portuguese 60s, their contradictions and ambivalences.

Noemi Alfieri conversa sobre projectos editoriais nascidos em África ou nas suas diásporas em meados do século XX, nomeadamente Mensagem, Présence Africaine e Black Orpheus. Entre características comuns, conta-se a descolonização política, cultural e do conhecimento, mas também mudanças epistemológicas, a dignificação da negritude e a consolidação de redes panafricanistas. Noemi Alfieri recorda as obras de Noémia de Sousa, Alda Espírito Santo, Mário Pinto de Andrade e Sarah Maldoror, entre outros, abordando a forma como as culturas com origem em África e na Europa foram comunicando. Noemí Alfieri fala ainda sobre o impacto de circulação, deslocações e laços pessoais e de solidariedade nestes processos. A entrevista é conduzida por José Alberto Catalão.

O Vol. 3, nº2/2023 (Jul./dez.) resulta de parcerias de vários docentes e investigadores que participaram da 2ª Conferência Internacional sobre Cultura & Sociedade – Que Literacia(s) para uma Justiça Económica e Social?, realizada na Universidade Zambeze, Moçambique, em formato online/remoto, nos dias 27 e 28 de maio de 2021. O dossier é composto por quinze (15) artigos avaliados aos pares e selecionados por um comitê Científico. Para além dos artigos do dossier (Seção I), foi publicado uma entrevista (Seção II), materiais literários/poesias (Seção III), artigos sobre as línguas de sinais (seção VI) e vários outros artigos científicos de diversas áreas afins (Seção VII).
