Arterial stiffness assessment by pulse wave analysis is regarded as a predictive factor of cardio vascular (CV) events. Arterial stiffness is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus.who have increased risk of CV disorders. The aim of this paper was to review current knowledge of the relationship between diabetes mellitus and pulse wave analysis.

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) in traumatology and orthopaedic surgery requires urgent diagnosis and treatment. Currently, it is not clear, whether functional regional anaesthesia and analgesia can lead to delay in diagnosis and treatment of ACS. In this systematic review, the authors evaluate the actual evidence-based data on regional anaesthesia/analgesia in high-risk patients with possible ACS.

Using enzymatic and immunochemical methods, the authors describe for the first time DPP-IV and FAP in various isoforms in high grade gliomas with a varying pattern in individual tumors. The molecular heterogeneity of both enzymes is most probably not due to differential glycosylation.

Using a large cohort of publically available RNA sequencing data for astrocytoma grades II-IV and normal brain samples, the authors analyzed gene expression profiles to identify key genes, regulatory network and signaling pathways. They also identified both unique and common characteristics of astrocytoma grades II-IV.

Circulating tumor cells are confirmed as a promising prognostic marker in metastatic cancer patients. A predictive potential of matrix metalloproteinase 2 serum level for brain metastases development in HER2 positive breast cancer patients was also found.

Are goblet cell carcinoids a group of heterogeneous tumors?

In the WHO classification, goblet cell carcinoids are neuroendocrine tumors; they react positively to neuroendocrine markers. However, some tumors having the same histological appearance do not react with these markers and their Ki-67 proliferative index is as high as that in adenocarcinomas. It is the opinion of the authors that these tumors should not be classified as goblet cell carcinoids.

CSF tau proteins and their index, differentiated Alzheimer's disease patients from other dementias and cognitively normal elderly subjects.CSF levels of neurofilaments expressed as their index discriminated between patients with neuroinflammation and Alzheimer's disease patients and cognitively normal controls.

Higher levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3 in patients with RA reflect disease activity and structural damage

This study evaluated the serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) in the context of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). The results were correlated with clinical activity, antibody profile and X ray findings. Levels of MMP-3 were statistically significant higher in RA patients than in healthy controls and OA patients and correlated with disease activity, antibody profile and radiographic disease stage. MMP-3 could become a novel marker of RA activity.

Possibilities for modifying risk factors for the development of hospital-acquired pneumonia in intensive care patients: results of a retrospective, observational study

Presented are single-center, retrospective data from a 5-year study of the epidemiology of hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) in intensive care patients. The sample was divided into f patients who developed early- or late-onset HAP and those who did not. The frequency of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors vis á vis the development of HAP was assessed. The most important non-modifiable factors were multiple organ failure, cardiac disease and chronic renal failure. The most common modifiable factors were intolerance of enteral nutrition, urgent tracheal intubation, reintubation and bronchoscopy. Stress ulcer prophylaxis was administered to 83% of HAP patients and 68% of patients without HAP. Prophylaxis with famotidine was associated with a lower risk than pentoprazole prophylaxis.

This very first study of tissue stiffness of thyroid, submandibular and parotid glands, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles, and cervical lymph nodes in kPa concluded their relatively narrow distribution (around 11 kPa) in healthy individuals. The sex, age and BMI showed statistically significant, however clinically insignificant, impact. Interestingly, systematically lower stiffness was demonstrated in all left-sided organs.
