Relation and Function

The document covers the concepts of functions and relations, defining relations as sets of ordered pairs and explaining the domain and range. It includes examples of how to represent relations using tables, mapping diagrams, and graphs, as well as distinguishing between functions and non-functions. Additionally, it provides practice problems and a quiz to assess understanding of these concepts.

the set of ordered pairs given the mapping diagram.
The first pair is provided for your guide.

Functions and
Relations
A relation is any set of ordered pairs.
Domain - set of all first coordinates in the relation (X-
coordinates) from the ordered pairs.

Range - set of all second coordinates in the relation (y-

coordinates) from the ordered pairs.
Functions and
Relations
Given the relation:

{(2, -6), (1, 4), (2, 4), (0, 0), (1, -6), (3, 0)}
Domain: {0, 1, 2, 3}
Range: {-6, 0, 4}
Take note: When writing the domain and range, do
not repeat values. Also, {} are the symbol for “set”.
Functions and
Relations
Let’s try this: Suppose you are working in a fast food
company. You earn Php40 per hour. Your earnings are related
to the number of hours of work. Given the following table,
solve for y and express each in an order pair.
# of hours 4 5 6 7
Earnings 4 (40) = 160 5 (40) = 200 6 (40) = 240 7 (40) = 280

Domain: {4, 5, 6, 7}
Range: {160, 200, 240, 280}
Ordered Pair : {(4,160),(5,200),(6,240),(7,280)}

ordered pairs, a relation may be represented in three
ways: (1)table, (2)mapping diagram, (3) graph

To remember
1. Create two ovals with the domain on the left and
the range on the right.

2. Elements are not repeated.

3.Connect elements of the domain

with corresponding elements in the range by
drawing an arrow.

Functions and
Relations
Functions – Is a special type of relation. It is a relation in which every
element in the domain is mapped to exactly one element in the range.
Furthermore, a set of ordered pairs is a function if no two ordered pairs have
equal abscissas.
For Example:

(2,3),(4,5),(6,7),(8,9)
Functions and
Relations
Let’s try this: Analyze the following set of ordered pairs. Identify
if it’s a function or a not-function.
1. {(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(4,5)} 4. {(-2,-1), (-1,0), (0,1) (1,2), (2,3),
Function (-2,-3)}
2. {(1,2),(2,2),(3,2),(4,2)} Not-function
Function 5. {(3,4), (8,11), (5,6), (10,13),
3. {(1,2),(1,3),(2,4),(3,5)} (6,8), (9,12), (3,5)}
Not-function Not-function
