FLYING ELECTRIC GENERATOR
Objectives of the Project Work

 The generator will be enclosed in an inflatable structure and this structure held
by tether and tied to the ground.

 It is a wind mill similar to conventional one in its working principle but here the
rotor and generator will be floating in air just like a hot air balloon.

 The electrical energy generated which transfer to the ground through the tether to
the power grid or a Battery.
Abstract of the Project Work

 Flying windmills appear to be 90 percent more energy efficient in wind tunnel tests than
their land-based counterparts; that is three times more efficiency due to simple yet
constantly abundant and effective high altitude wind power.
 It is very environmentally friendly and It can be placed closed to the demand center due to
which Transmission line cost and Transmission loses are reduced.
 The same materials used in the tethers that hold these balloons in place can also hold flying
windmills in place; and with energy cable technology getting ever lighter and stronger
 FEG technology is just cheaper, cleaner and can provide more energy than those
environmentally unhealthy methods of the past, making it a desirable substitute/alternative.

employed in wind turbine system are. A rotor

at the specified grid frequency.
Proposed approach
 The Flying Electric Generator (FEG) is an innovative lighter-than-air tethered
device that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently
generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing
systems.
 The generator will be enclosed in an inflatable structure and this structure is held
by a Tether and tied to the ground.
 It is a windmill similar to a conventional one in its working principle but here the
rotor and generator will be floating in air just like a hot air balloon.
 As the rotor of the electric generator rotates due to high velocity wind it produces
very high torque.
 There is a step-up gear box which connects the lowspeed shaft to the high-speed
shaft and increases the rotational speeds from about 30 to 60 rotations per minute.
 The electrical energy thus produced is transferred down the tether for
consumption, or to a set of batteries or the power grid.

Block Diagram Description
 Wind Blade: This is the part of the wind turbine that is exposed to the wind
and converts its kinetic energy into mechanical energy.

 Temperature Sensor: This device measures the temperature of the wind or the
surrounding environment. It could be used to monitor the operating temperature of
the wind turbine system and ensure it's within safe limits.

 DC Generator: A DC (Direct Current) generator is an electrical machine that

converts mechanical energy into DC power. In this context, there are four such
generators, which could be used to increase the overall power output of the system.

 Humidity Sensor: This sensor measures the amount of moisture in the air. Humidity
data can be important for corrosion prevention and ensuring the longevity of
electrical components.

 Buck-Boost Converter: This is a type of electrical converter that can step up or step
down the voltage of a DC power source. It's useful in situations where the input
voltage may vary, and a constant output voltage is required.
Advantages
 High altitude from ground level are possible with out expensive
tower.

 They do not required land , wide road and machinery for assembly.

 Ability to install closer to the power grid.

 Low cost electricity.

 Environmental friendly
Future Scope

 Charging batteries and using them to light up the streets, etc .

Suitable for parking at multiplexes, malls, toll booths, signals etc.

Such speed breakers can be designed for heavy vehicles, thus increasing input
torque and ultimately output of generator

 More suitable and compact mechanism to enhance efficiency

FEG technology will be applied off-grid and combined with diesel power for developing nations,
island nations, farms, remote areas, cell towers, exploration equipment, oil and gas wells, mining
sites, offshore drilling stations, and backup power & water pumps. FEG could also be used for on-
grid applications for farms, factories, and remote communities. We know that Wind energy is a
CLEAN Energy i.e. Pollution-free and eco-friendly. Also wind energy is a renewable energy. This
paper presents the critical analysis of existing literature which is relevant to flying electric
generator Though, the literature consists of a lot many research contributions, but, here, we have
analyzed some important research and review papers. The existing approaches are categorized
based on the basic concepts involved in the mechanisms.
