Slip Ring Induction Motor Starter

1) The document describes the operation of a slip ring induction motor starter and analyzes the current at each step of the starting process. As the motor speeds up, the slip decreases and current reduces at each step. 2) Mathematical equations are developed to relate the current (I), slip (s), and resistance (R) values at each step. The total resistance increases by a factor α at each step. 3) It is shown that the slip at the final speed (sm) is related to α and the number of steps (n) by the equation sm = αn. The final resistance is also equal to R1(α)n.

Slip Ring Induction Motor Starter

Neglect the resistance and leakage reactance of stator winding.

Let X = standstill reactance of rotor
E = Standstill EMF of rotor
At Stud:1
Motor is switched on and motor draws maximum current.
Let slip be s1.
s1 E
I1 .
R1 ( s1 X ) 2
2

As motor picks up speed, slip falls to s2 and thus current

reduces to I2 just before notching.
s2 E
I2 .
R1 ( s2 X ) 2
2 1
Continue..
At Stud:2
Resistance r1 is cut out and current rises to I1. Assume that the
speed remains constant during notching up.
Hence, the slip just before notching is s2.
s2 E
I1 .
R2 ( s2 X ) 2
2

Now just before notching at stud 2, current falls to I2 with slip s3.
s3 E
I2 .
R2 ( s3 X ) 2

Continue..
Hence,
s1 E s2 E sn 1 E

From above eq.

And,

From above eq.

Dividing eq (a) by eq (b)

Slip at starting s1=1 and slip at (n+1)th stud sn+1 = sfl = sm.
Equation (iii) now becomes,
