EEE 325 (Control Systems) - Assignment 01
Instructor: Dr. M. Rizwan Azam Total Marks = 100
Due Date: 12th October 2022
Question 01: [5x2 = 10 Marks] (CLO1 [C2])
Answer Following Short questions
i. Enlist Five Open loop and Close loop control systems in your home.
ii. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of Open loop and Close loop control systems.
iii. Give an example in real life where human acts as a controller.
iv. Physically, what happens to a system that is unstable? Describe with example.
v. Can we use Final Value Theorem to find steady state error of an unstable system?
Explain with any example.
Question 02: [10 + 10 + 10 = 30 marks]
Consider the following systems, represented by Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) in time
with c(t) as the system output and r(s) as system input. (CLO1 [C3])
a. 𝑐𝑐̈ + 4𝑐𝑐̇ + 4𝑐𝑐 = 𝑟𝑟
b. 𝑐𝑐̈ + 4𝑐𝑐̇ = 𝑟𝑟
c. 𝑐𝑐̈ + 4𝑐𝑐̇ − 4𝑐𝑐 = 𝑟𝑟
Apply the knowledge of Laplace and inverse Laplace transforms to perform following:
𝐶𝐶(𝑠𝑠)
i. Compute transfer functions for above systems: 𝐺𝐺(𝑠𝑠) =
𝑅𝑅(𝑠𝑠)
ii. Evaluate the step response for the systems, both by hand and by
MATLAB. (hint: use “step ()” command)
iii. Apply final value theorem to compute 𝑐𝑐(∞)
Question 03: [10 Marks]
Solve following Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) using Laplace transform with the initial conditions
𝑥𝑥 (0) = 2 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 𝑥𝑥(̇ 0) = 1. Verify your coefficients using residue command in MATLAB. (CLO1 [C3])
𝑥𝑥̈ + 5𝑥𝑥̇ + 4𝑥𝑥 = 3𝑒𝑒 −2𝑡𝑡
