Operation on Function
• Like in real numbers, we define some operations: addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division on functions :
(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)
(f – g)(x) = f(x) – g(x)
(f.g)(x) = f(x).g(x)
(f/g)(x) = f(x)/g(x)
• As long as the right sides are defined, then the oprations
have meaning
• Example, if f(x) = x2 and g(x) = 1/x, then f + g is a new
function that assign x to x2 + 1/x, which is
(f + g)(x) = x2 + 1/x.
Calculus
Domain
• The domain of f + g is the intersection between the
domain of f and the domain of g, {x є R | x ≠ 0 }.
• We can also do power operation on a function f, such
as
• f p(x) = [f(x)]p, as long as right term is defined
• Example:
• f(x)=x2 + 1 and g(x) = x3 + x
– (f+g)(x) = x3 + x2 + x + 1
– (f – g)(x) = -x3 + x2 – x + 1
– (f.g)(x) = ?
– (f/g)(x) = ?

Calculus
Example
• Example 1. Given f(x) = √x and g(x) = x2. Then
(g ° f )(x) = g(f(x)) = g(√x) = (√x)2 = x.
The domain of g ° f is the same with the domain of f:
[0,∞).
• Example 2. Given f(x) = √x and g(x) = 1/x. Then
(g ° f )(x) = g(f(x)) = g(√x) = 1/√x.
The domain of g ° f is { x є D(f ) | f(x) ≠ 0 } = (0,∞).
• Note. Composition of functions is not commutative,
in general, g ° f ≠ f ° g.
