Stephen Vincent Benet s By The Water Of Babylon
Literary Analysis
All of these things are forbidden. With these words, John, the son of a priest in Stephen Vincent
Benet s story By the water of Babylon, begins his precarious journey East to the place of the gods.
The trip John plans to take is one expressly forbidden by his father and by the rules of John s
society. Through John s experiences on his voyage to the place of the gods, especially because of the
uncertainties John faced with courage and conviction, Stephen Vincent Benet shows the challenges a
person faces when making a difficult choice.
When John first appears in the story, he seems faithful and deferential to his father. This is shown
especially when he waits outside while his father searches the dead places. At one point in the
story, John says, Never the less my brothers would not have done it. When this is said, John is
narrating a journey he and his father took into a dead place when he was very young. With this line,
John is showing that he possesses a loyalty to his father far superior to anything his brothers might
have. John is shown to have a relationship more deep and personal with his father than his brothers
have. John shows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We read about John trying to comprehend the past with the line, Perhaps, in the old days, they ate
knowledge too fast, which John says to his father after he had listened to John s story. This line is
important to one of Benet s overall messages, which is to learn lessons from the past. John will be
able to rebuild past splendors and avoid past catastrophes. When John finally learned everything he
could from the past, he says, We must build again. This line best encompassed John s wisdom. He
recognized precisely what had been wrong with the past and that his society needed to exercise the
wisdom and power of the past. Benet leaves John s story with one clear message: to respect and

Airport Appearances

A shrieking whistle breaks the dark silence of the room. I roll over with a dazed groan and slam on
the snooze.

5:00 a.m. Why do the nights go so much quicker than the days? , I ask myself as I roll back over in
a futile attempt to relish the extra seven minutes I ve been granted by the neon globe on my night

5:02 a.m. There are a few things I can see without my glasses in the dim light of the morning, and
this is one of them: Seven extra minutes are not going to compensate for last night s fun. It s time to

Once in the car I turn up the heat to 4 and start to munch on a piece of toast. Dave and Lee, my
morning companions, are at work on the radio and I begin my commute.

We re seven miles from the airport which I have timed to take about twenty minutes, on a good
day. Around me shadows of house flash by. In the distance I see the boxy form of an MTC at the
stop light on Nicollet. I know that if I time it right, I can miss these reds. My morning challenge.
Beat the red light.

You start seeing the lights about two miles from the airport. Especially the Rabbit. You couldn t
miss it if you tried. I m surrounded by taxis, mostly, and a few other crazy commuters like me. It s
all worth it at the end of the day, I try to convince myself as I coast to a stop. The afternoons and

Once I reach the airport, I park my car and ride a shuttle to the terminal. It runs in ten minute

The Department Of Homeland Security And Homeland Defense
The defense, security, and safety American citizens enjoy each and every day is a result of dedicated
professionals committed to Homeland Security and Homeland Defense. These broad initiatives
require well defined missions, organized and focused tasking, and finally, clearly understood duties,
responsibilities, and operations. Organizations charged with these responsibilities must be better
resourced than those of the enemy. Success in each of these objectives requires a well organized
infrastructure with clear mission sets. The afore mentioned areas of responsibility, related planning,
and resource/personnel management are fluid (rightfully so) and are constantly reevaluated,
restructured, and/or reinforced to best counterattack our Nation s vulnerabilities before they become
casualties.

In its very simplest terms, Homeland Security s focus starts from the United States borders and
works inward. At the forefront leading this initiative is the Department of Homeland Security
(DHS). DHS was established following the devastating terrorist attacks carried out on September
11th, 2001 in an attempt to safeguard the American people, US soil, and American values (DHS,
2016). DHS has a crucial mission set that includes securing the nation from it s many threats and
requires the utmost dedication of its ~250,000 trained professionals.
These great Americans are trained in a vast amount of specialty areas including: aviation and border

Who Was Responsible For The Sinking Of The Titanic
The Titanic tragedy was not a very happy event, but I am here to share my opinion on the causes of
the sinking of it.

After examining all of the evidence, I have concluded that Captain Smith was the most significant
cause in the sinking of the Titanic at 80 percent. I believe he was the main cause because he
cancelled the lifeboat drills, and his crew decided to not turn out of the way of the iceberg. Also, only
environmental factors matter if they hadn t crashed into the iceberg.

Many other things aside from Captain Smith also helped in the demise of the Titanic on April 15,
1912. The pie graph indicates that Design Construction and Environmental Factors had the least
effect on the Titanic s sinking.

Introduction
The Yarra Valley is the oldest wine region in Victoria, located in the north east of Melbourne and
just over an hour drive from Melbourne CBD. The name of the Yarra Valley was given from the
region that is surrounding the Yarra River, which runs and originates for approximately 90
kilometres east of Melbourne s business district and towards one of Victoria s famous tourist
attractions, Port Phillip Bay. The valley covers a very large area consisting of Yarra Ranges
National Park located in the east and Kinglake National Park which is located in the west. The
valley further consists of many towns such as Coldstream, Lilydale, Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek,

The Treatment of Black Africans in South Africa in the...
The Treatment of Black Africans in South Africa in the 1930 s and 1940 s In this essay I will be
informing you on everything I know about the treatment of black South Africans in the 1930 s
and 1940 s. I will be explaining how life was in the 1930 s when they were under the Afrikaner
government. I will be explaining how the second world war made them feel positive about their
future and how things changed. I will also be giving you a little of information on the Atlantic
Charter and how it also made people feel things were going to change. I will try to make my points
clear so you can understand what I might have written. In the 1930 s the blacks were under the

The other segregationist laws enlarged the colour bar so that the supplementary expert jobs were
kept for whites. The laws put more control on the movement of blacks into towns and they were
like prisoners. In the 1940 s things started to get better for the black South Africans. They started
to feel optimistic and confident because all the whites had gone to war, which meant they weren
t they was hardly anyone in the city, so this was a chance for the blacks to move back to the city
and try to put their lives back on tracks. The fact that the whites were at war was a major break
through for the blacks because the companies would need people to work there. Like the mining
and manufacturing companies, they needed people to make all the guns and machines. This was
turning point for them for the reason that they got to work in the companies in the city and they
will start to earn money like before and would be able to get their lives together again. Many
more of them stated leaving the reserves and moved back to the city because the reserves got
worse, all the water was dirty; there were no toilets and no more food. The period of war strained
Smuts the Prime minister at the time, to loosen up some of the laws. He loosened the law that told

Gender Roles In The Addams And Morticia
In terms of racial or ethnic based strengths and stresses, both shows display a clear focus on the spirit
of unity between the members of the respective families. From Uncle Fester trying to stir up trouble
so Gomez and Morticia can release any tension in their marriage to the aforementioned couple
lending Cousin Itt a helping hand when he starts losing his hair, the Addamses are united in their
efforts to create a harmonious environment within their household. However, their only minor
downfall is their naivety towards foreign visitors with questionable intentions (The Addams Family:

In The Addams Family, Gomez is the stereotypical working husband who, through owning numerous
companies and stocks, is filthy rich. Morticia, in a sense, embodies certain aspects of the stay at
home mother figure, especially through fulfilling her wife work responsibilities, such as assuming
total responsibility for Gomez s emotional caretaking, monitoring his physical well being, and
maintaining his extended family relationships (Benokraitis, 2014). Morticia acts as the clear
headed calming agent within the family, and is able to guide the Addamses to making better
choices in their lives. However, while Morticia is very level headed and content within her role in
the family, she faces a strong sense of rivalry against her sister Ophelia, who had almost become
Gomez s wife until Uncle Fester helped sort everything out (The Addams Family: Episode
Apocalypse Now Vietnam War
Apocalypse Now took place during the Vietnam War and is directed by Frances Ford Coppola. In
this film he went above and beyond to show the mental impact war has on it s military. The US
militaries involvement in the film shows very intense situations. The US has no mercy. They were
in Vietnam working on taking total and complete control. Sadly, they didn t really know what they
were doing or who was in command. For example Captain Benjamin L. Willard, often found
himself searching for answers but everything is a mess. Soldiers were randomly shooting at
unknown things. The US military is confused but still followed their orders. The effects of war on
military soldiers, post traumatic stress disorder cause the soldiers to have mental breakdowns... Show

When surrounded by it, the mental drama is very extreme and hard to recover from it. It
eventually takes over Willard. For example, they would paint their faces with mud which to me it
symbolizes no fear. Captain Willard was able to take over the situation and execute Colonel
Walter E. Kurtz. Charging a man with murder in this place was like handing out speeding tickets
in the Indy 500 what I like most about this quote is that its real. Obviously drivers in the Indy 500
are expected to speed. This cruel war expects men to commit murder on a daily basis. This quote
sums up how nasty the Vietnam War was. This led to one of the highest causalities from any war
in history. Some of the lessons we ve learned are almost identical from our past wars to our present.
Almost all wars are unpopular with the homeland but a need for our country to remain safe and free.
Both Vietnam and our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan caused many young Americans to die
fighting for their country. Anytime we have people in harms way it makes for many people
questioning why we went to war. This was demonstrated throughout many scenes in the movie.
Whether you are for or against the war the outcome in all confrontation has resulted in America
being a safer place and our freedom has never been
Social Psychology And Its Impact On Individual Behavior
Social psychology has evolved through history and its developments and contributions have been
remarkable. This specialized area of psychology studies various topics that are significant for human
beings (Ross, Lepper, Ward, 2010). This paper presents with an overview of social psychology by
addressing its central themes, strengths, limitations, relevance, and the significance of cultural
considerations.
Central themes Three central themes are apparent in social psychology research. These themes are
group influence, subjectism, and non obvious experimental demonstrations. Studies of power of
group on individual behavior dominated in the early days of social psychology research.
Researchers recognized that both explicit and implicit group norms are important. Moreover,
reference groups serve as a source of norms and are closely associated with a degree of satisfaction
with individual life situations (Ross, Lepper, Ward, 2010). Based on these recognitions, there was
the development of social comparison theory, which focused on the drive for self evaluation based
on comparison with others (Festinger, 1954). Other bodies of study involving group influence
include topics, which related to intergroup relations, cultural influences, and group verses individual
estimates, judgments, and predictions (Ross, Lepper, Ward, 2010). Subjectism as a theme in social
psychology has stood in an opposition to behaviorism, which left no room for individual mental
processes. Social
Mockingbird Symbolism
In the historical fiction novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee creates many characters that
demonstrate heroic qualities. It is the setting of the Great Depression Era and 6 year old Jean
Louise Finch (Scout) is being raised by her dad, Atticus, and her brother, Jem. Atticus is a fair
lawyer who was chosen to take up the case of Tom Robinson. Their lives were put in danger
because Atticus defended a Negro. Harper Lee showed the effects of racism and prejudice in
everyday life. Harper Lee s story title includes the word ¨mockingbird¨. The mockingbird is a sign
of symbolism in the story. The mockingbird represents innocence. Tom Robinson and Boo Radley
(the mysterious neighbor) are the ¨mockingbirds in this story. Atticus is a hero in To Kill a
Mockingbirdfor his bravery and showing of equality. Atticus put all of his effort in Tom Robinson
s trial although he knew that there was no chance of winning. Atticus told his son Jem, I wanted
you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his
hand. It s when you know you re licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter
what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Atticus was talking to Jem about Mrs. Dubose
because Jem had read to her everyday before she passed away. Atticus explained to Jem what real
courage was and the topic shifted to the court case with Tom Robinson. Atticus knows there is no
chance of winning, but he still tried his best. Atticus is fair
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Savage Inequalities By Jonathan...
In Jonathan Kozol s essay, Savage Inequalities Kozol explains what he has learned from visiting
three different district ten schools in New York. Kozol ultimately argues that students from low
economic classes are being pushed aside and not given an equal education like the kids from high
economic class schools. Looking at Kozol s essay through a postcolonial scope the low class
students can easily be seen as the subaltern and the high class students can be seen as the fortunate
who benefit from the hegemonic power. Kozol describes the lower class schoolsituation as if it
weren t even school. Public School 261 is at a roller rink not even a formal built school. Some
rhetoric devices that Kozol employs in his essay are artistic along with
The Bill Of Rights, Personal Freedoms, And The Armed Forces
Freedom
The definition of Freedom: Absence of subjection to foreign domination, or despotic government. If
you think about it, we get a lot of rights that people in other countries don t get. Freedom is a
privilege, and we shouldn t take it for granted. In the next three paragraphs will talk about: The Bill
of Rights, Personal freedoms, and the Armed Forces. The Bill of Rights is very important to
America s freedom. Without the Bill of Rights we wouldn t have freedom of religion, freedom of
speech, and freedom of the press. Freedom of religion means that you can practice any kind of
religion, whether it is Christianity or Catholicism. Freedom of speech is being able to express your
opinions. Freedom of the press
Portrayal of Asian Americans
Abstract
My research focused on the coverage of Asian Americans in contemporary mass media. The
following types of media were researched:
·Music
·Television
·Films
·Magazines
I gave several examples where Asian Americans were used to play very simple characters. These
roles were defined by stereotypes that exist in America. I also researched instances on counter
actions taken by Asian Americans to protest against these negative images. My research also has
examples of Asians that have succeeded in breaking through the racial barriers in the media.
The results show that even though racial stereotyping still exists in various forms of mass media,
there are signs that show noticeable improvement on allowing a more balanced ... Show more content

Hollywood typically restricts its portrayals of Asians to a limited range of clichéd stock characters
(Restrictive Portrayals [RP], 2004). Examples of the common roles that Asian Americans play in
movies are martial artists, Indian cab drivers, television anchorwomen and prostitutes (RP, 2004).
Even if most Americans do not buy into these images because they interact with many Asian
Americans who do not fit the stereotype, the areas of concern are those parts in the United States
where there isn t a sufficient Asian population (Wu, 2002). Since many Asian people do not surround
these Americans on an everyday environment, it is a safe assumption that they will draw their
judgment of Asian Americans from how they are portrayed on film and television.
In many American films, Asian men are portrayed as passive, old, and speak broken English. The
Karate Kid was a popular movie that depicted the Asian actor as such a man. In The Karate Kid,
Pat Morita plays Mr. Miyagi, an old Japanese American World War II veteran who calmly trains an
enthusiastic white teenage male the Japanese martial arts of karate. Despite the fact that Mr.
Miyagi was an American World War II veteran, he was still portrayed speaking English with a
foreign accent. The myth that all Asian men know some form of martial arts was also stressed in
this movie when Mr. Miyagi surprises Daniel (the white male leading actor) with his karate moves
after appearing
