Betta Splendens Essay
I) Background
Betta splendens, otherwise known as the Siamese fighting fish, is widely recognized as an
aggressive species of fish, as its common name indicates. B. splendens, which is native to
Southeast Asia, has an appearance consisting of a wide array of colors, ranging from varying
shades of red, yellow, green, and blue. In addition, female Siamese fighting fish generally have
duller body colors in comparison to males. Also, the scales of B. splendens seem to shine with
different colors as the angle of view changes. It is due to the hostile nature and the brilliant features
of the Siamese fighting fish that it was given the name of Betta splendens, as it translates to splendid
battler . As a result of the rainbow like appearance, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two of the glow sticks will be blue whereas the remaining two will be red. However, in order to test
the effect of bright colors against dull colors, I will be wrapping one blue and one red glow stick in
wax paper in order to make their colors dull, leaving the other two unwrapped to give off a brighter
color. I will also use two male B. splendens, both of which will be contained in their own, two
gallon, plastic aquarium filled with water. To monitor the temperature of the water inside the
aquariums, a thermometer will be placed in each. One of the fish, inside its aquarium, will be the
experimental group while the other fish will be the control group. The experimental group will be
exposed to only one glow stick at a time, whereas the glow sticks will be absent from inside the
control group s aquarium at all times during the experiment. Cardboard will also be required, as it
will act as a barrier between the two aquariums. This barrier will prevent any light from the
experimental group being visible to the control group. In addition, the cardboard will keep both fish
visually isolated from each other, which will, in turn, prevent the two fish from being aggressive
towards each other and affecting the data. Finally, I will use a timer to keep track of the amount of
time that the experimental fish was exposed to each glow
Guns in Schools
Imagine a world where school shootings did not exist. Parents could send their children to school
without having to worry about them being shot. In 2013, thirty school shootings took place in the
United States. The most devastating school shooting in U.S. history was the Bath School shooting.
On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoeentered the Bath Elementary School killing thirty eight people and
injuring fifty eight. Kehoe then returned to his truck, and committed suicide by using explosives.
School teachers would have a better chance, in high risk situations if they carried guns.
Some are afraid that by placing guns in school zones, more deaths and homicides will occur. That
by giving administrators guns the chance of a shooting will increase tremendously, but the truth is
by not placing guns on school property, we are increasing the chance of having our children and
loved ones being shot. By allowing our administrators to carry guns in schools, we decrease the
chance of someone walking into that school and possibly injuring or killing our students and
teachers. The Superintendent David Hopkins of the Arkansas district stated The plan we ve been
given in the past is Well, lock your doors, turn off your lights and hope for the best That s not a
plan ( Guns in School #2). Locking the doors and hoping for the best is not the best way to protect
the students and teachers. Arming a number of administrators and allowing them to protect
themselves and students is the best way to be
Imagery In Andrew Marvell s To His Coy Mistress
To his coy mistress, a poem written by Andrew Marvell, who tries to persuade a
women(unknown) to sleep with him. In this poem Marvell uses many powerful poetic techniques
such as imagery, rhetorical questions, paradoxes and metaphors, all these techniques were used
throughout the poem to set an atmosphere. Marvell uses imagery to create the atmosphere of the
personality and character of the young man. The writer uses a metaphors to say that life is short
and we should just get on with the relationship But at my back I always hear Times winged
chariot hurrying near and While the youthful hue sits on the skin like the morning dew... let us
sport these quotes prove that Marvell is begging her to stop wasting time before there too old. He
uses alliteration and says this coyness, lady, were no crime , he addresses her as coy (shy) this
suggest that he wants something from her that she isn t prepared to give him. Moreover, the image
of how death is lurking the woman fills her with fear, to again convince the woman to sleep with the
writer. Unlike in the first stanza where the writer gives no importance for the woman to make her
decision, in the second stanza Marvell demands her to urgently make a decision:... Show more

She described herself as the girl in the first stanza, then again there is the idea of time again in the
third stanza. Time it self s a feather shows us the effect of growing old on the couple, like a
feather, is very light and they seem not knowing that they are aging, as it is soo gentle . She then
says Do they know they re old, These two who are my father and my mother? this quote explains
to us that they were not like this before. in the last line she describes their relationship before as
fire , making the reader feel as if they were happy and lively, then ruins that effect by saying, but
now it has grown cold , like a dying fire over
Characterization, Symbolism, and Repetition in Hundred...
Characterization, Symbolism, and Repetition in One Hundred Years of Solitude
The names of characters often suggest something about their personalities, either straightforwardly
or ironically. Garcia Marquez s One Hundred Years of Solitude, Prudencio Aguilar is neither prudent
nor eagle like (aguila means eagle in Spanish). Repetition of names and behaviors is another
technique of characterization. Certain character types, e.g., the contemplative, stubborn man, or the
impetuous, forceful man, the patient and nurturing woman, and so on, are represented by more than
one individual in the several generations of the Buendia family. All the Jose Arcadios, for example,
are assumed to have at least some of the traits of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Occasionally, a character can be identified by a characteristic type of speech. Jose Arcadio Buendia
(the founder) is given to harsh, short, judgmental declarations: The world is round, like an orange!
Ursula speaks sternly, also in short sentences. Fernanda del Carpio goes on at great length, in a
vocabulary reminiscent of the sixteenth century (Spain s Century of Gold in literature), especially in
her magnificent, one sentence, three page monologue. Jose Arcadio Segundo speaks very simply
and directly. Unfortunately, some of these subtleties (particularly the antiquated vocabulary of
Fernanda) are almost impossible to convey in translation, although Gregory Rabassa has made a
noble effort.
Even this brief treatment, which leaves out numerous subplots involving dozens of characters,
gives some idea of the enormous complexity and scope of the novel. As discussed in chapter II, on
Garcia Marquez s life and career, it took the author twenty years of constant writing and reading to
perfect the devices that enable him to tie all these elements together. It is an intricately plotted book,
all the episodes echoing and reinforcing one another so that, at the end, it is the entire book rather
than just the conclusion that hits the reader with full force. It is for its
Intertextuality In Walang Forever
Analyzing Genres and Intertextuality: A Critical Paper on the Film Walang Forever
Genre Analysis The genre analysis approach in analyzing media texts helps classify and breakdown
the different genres that were recognized by the viewers as well as created by the movie makers.
These genres offer satisfaction to their target audience brought by the pleasure of having predicted
what was supposed to happen during the film. Genre analysis also identifies whether there is
intertextuality present in relation to other films with the same genre. The recognition of these genres
and having identified their importance within the media text will help the audience to relate the
different cinematic elements of the film and gain more understanding of the ideas that the media text
wanted to convey.
Genre Analysis and Ideology
Having mentioned that the recognition of genres within a media text offer pleasure or satisfaction
to its audience, it is implied that genre analysis is also related to the different ideologies offered by
the media text since there is a momentary satisfaction gained from having achieved the goal of
identifying the genres and predicting the possible outcome of the media text. However, the paper
will only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tear jerking scenes of Mia and Ethan as they tried to accept that they will not be with each other
forever, but their love will. The painful revelation of Ethan s critical condition as well as the scene
where she revealed this sickness to her mother and to Mia are both dramatic and truly emotional.
Along with the drama genre is the tragedy which is recognized when Ethan died. However, tragedy
was not heavily observed since the movie foretold that Mia has accepted and expected the death
of her lover. This somehow relates to a person s life where he or she loses a loved one, which is very
painful but they learn to slowly accept that their loved one is gone forever in their

Marketing Management Strategy of L’oreal Groups
Marketing Management Strategy of L Oreal Groups
Introduction
Many cosmetic brands are popping up recently, perhaps, due to the increasing consumers of
products that beautify and enhance the physical appearance of a person. Even though the market is
already full of the said cosmetic brands, the company L Oreal Groups could still be considered as the
leading supplier of cosmetics and hair color. This study is a brief overview of the marketing
concepts and strategy of the said company. The company profile will be presented to be able to
give a clear view of the market to which the company belongs to. An internal and external (SWOT)
analysis of the company will also be provided in this paper. Another area will be specifically devoted

The pharmaceutical activities of L Oreal are also handled by Sanofi Aventis. These divisions and
subdivisions ensure the quality that the L Oreal Group offers to its customers. To further add to the
enumerated strengths of the company, L Oreal s advertising strategy also plays a major part to its
growth. Through adapting to the culture of their target market as the main tool of their
advertisement, the Company brought L Oreal products within reach of other women from different
parts of the world.
2. Weaknesses
Perhaps one of the weaknesses that a big company faces is the decentralized organizational
structure. This is also part of the difficulties that L Oreal is facing. Due to the many subdivisions
of the Company, there is also the difficulty in the control of L Oreal. This slows down the
production of the Company because of the need of giving reference to the other Board members
and directors of the Company. L Oreal will also have a difficulty in finding out what division is
accountable for the possible pitfalls of the Company. Another weakness that L Oreal faces is their
profit. The profit margin of L Oreal is comparably low than that of the other smaller rivals. While L
Oreal projects certain rise in digits as their profit, the result does not usually meet the expectations
(Sang, 2003). Perhaps, this is also due to the high end advertising and marketing as well as the width
of the Company. Finally, the coordination and the control of the activities
Construction Of The Public Sphere
Gerard Hauser critiques Habermas construction of the public sphere, pointing out many of its
weaknesses. Hauser does concede that Habermas ideas about the public sphere are meant to focus
solely on the bourgeois public sphere and not include all public spheres; however, Habermas critics
have approached his model as universal, so it needs to be examined, contextually, as an approach to
universally understanding public spheres (47 48).
Because Hauser s approach to the public sphere is more dynamic than Habermas , by that I mean that
it purposefully engages multiple public spheres their individual autonomy as well as their influence
on other public spheres differences between the two rationales are presented. Hauser points to six
crucial differences, where he feels that Habermas missed the mark at understanding the
transformation of the public sphere. Hauser is concerned with how discourse realistically happens
within the public sphere, whereas, he argues, Habermas argument is contingent on the existence of
ideal speech (46).
Hauser s first problem with Habermas theory of the public sphere is that in order for Habermas
ideas to work, they need to be the only public sphere, that is, a universal public sphere. This is not
accurate of how discourse functions. Many discourse communities or public spheres function on
their own and have influence on each other. To suggest that there is only one public sphere forces
others to conform to that one universal
Reflection Paper On Narcissism
Reading this week s articles became all too personal for me as I began to reflect on the book that
I am writing in which the protagonist is a narcissist. When telling people about my book most
people cannot get past the fact that the protagonist is my mother, but her narcissistic personality is
what created the storyline for my entire text. She has many of the classic attributes of a narcissist,
my favorite (from a writer s perspective) is her immense lack of empathy. It is extremely incredible
that what little empathy she can find she can control based on who she is with and what the specific
circumstances are. While the book may shed light on some of the negative things she has done in her
past or the negative behaviors associated with her narcissismI have been sure to include an entire
chapter detailing my belief that narcissism should be considered an objective personality type.
Narcissism has an enormous amount of negative connotation surrounding it which is ironic to be
because there are positive attributes some of which many of us share.
The article mentioned, Most of us have elements of all three, when referring to the three main
personality types of erotics, obsessives, and narcissists (Maccoby). I agree with Maccoby which
is why I think it is important that we continue to find a place in the workplace for those who are
narcissistic and abrasive because even though we may not agree with their style we must
welcome diversity in order to avoid groupthink. I think that ensuring a well balanced mix of
personalities in a workplace can boost production and allow leaders to rise from the shadows of
abrasive and narcissistic leaders who may have overstayed their welcome. Another benefit to
maintaining the abrasive personality in the workplace is to encourage the high achiever in the
room who may have the leadership skills to take over a conversation and just need the right
opportunity to do so. If a high achiever gets fed up with another s behavior it may serve as a catalyst
for his/her management of the group.
If an abrasive worker is also a brilliant one, then we must give him/her a chance to find success
within the organization. If one allows his/her personality to get in the way of success,
