April 17: Birth anniversary of freedom fighter
Dheeran Chinnamalai
The great warrior
who would not ask for pardon
Although the British forces captured the Oda Nilai fort as planned,
the absence of Dheeran Chinnamalai, his brothers, and any of the
soldiers was a great disappointment to them.
Later, the British, who learned through their spies that
Chinnamalai was in Kallikottai, which was under the control of
the Virupatchi, in a plot to arrest Chinnamalai, bribed his cook,
Nallan by promising him twenty acres of land, gold, and goods.
At this time, Dheeran Chinnamalai, along with his
brother and some soldiers, very precisely took a measure
of all the weapons they had made at Thirumalaikattu and
decided on the following: whom should they send the
weapons to, for how many more days should they make more weapons, how many
soldiers would come in the battalion and how to gather the old soldiers in the Oda Nilai
area and use them on the battlefield. When noon came, they set off with their younger
brothers towards Nallan's place for lunch.
They entered his house, asking, ''Nallan, what is on the menu today'' ! He replied,
"I have your favourite iguana and chicken soup. You can put your weapons outside
and clean your hands". They left their guns and bombs outside and entered Nallan's
house. As soon as they entered, Nallan pushed the box in front of the house without
any hesitation, and the British soldiers who had already arrived through the tunnel
prepared by the British surrounded the three of them with guns and bombs.
On a day in 1805, a mock trial was held at Sankagiri Fort. The British said that
if they apologized, they would let them live. But since Chinnamalai and his younger
brothers did not agree to it, all four were hanged on 31 July 1806.

April 14: Birth Anniversary of Dr.Ambedkar
The Architech of
Social Justice
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956) was born
on 14 April 1891 in Mhow Cantonment, Madhya Pradesh.
His education was achieved in the face of significant
discrimination, for he belonged to the Scheduled Caste (then
considered as ‘untouchables’).
Dr Ambedkar graduated from Bombay University in
1912. On account of his excellent performance at college, in
1913 he was awarded a scholarship by Sayajirao Gaikwad,
then Maharaja (King) of Baroda state to pursue his M.A. and
Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York, USA.
After Columbia, Dr. Ambedkar moved to London, where
he registered at the London School of Economics and Political
Science (LSE) to study economics, and enrolled in Grey’s Inn
to study law. However, due to lack of funds, he had to return
to India in 1917.
In 1920, with the financial assistance from Chatrapati
Shahuji Maharaj of Kolhapur, a personal loan from a friend
and his savings from his time in India, Dr. Ambedkar returned
to London to complete his education. In 1922, he was called
to the bar and became a barrister-at-law. He also completed
his M.Sc. and D.Sc. from the LSE. His doctoral thesis was
later published as “The Problem of the Rupee”.
In 1946, he was elected to the Constituent Assembly
of India. On 15 August 1947, he took oath as the first Law
Minister of independent India. Subsequently, he was elected
Chairperson of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent
Assembly, and steered the process of drafting of India’s
Constitution. After the first General Election in 1952, he
became a Member of the Rajya Sabha.

April 27: Birth Anniversary of Sir Pitti Theagarayar
Philanthropist and pioneer
of technical education
Education through books alone is not education.
Vocational education is also essential for life. This was the
principle of Sir Pitti Theagarayar, who was the pioneer of
vocational education in today's schools.
It was due to his tireless efforts that the Government
Victoria Vocational Training Institute was established on
26.03.1889.
In 1905, Chengalvaraya Nayak Technical Training
School was established due to his efforts.
Sir Pitti Theagarayar laid the foundation for
today's technical training institutions, schools and
colleges and tried to see their development.
He was fully involved in the fields of education, philanthropy, industry and
commerce and became very famous and involved himself in politics.
In 1882, he was elected as the member of the Chennai City Council. Through
this, he served the people of Chennai for 42 years.
He brought electric lighting to Chennai in 1912. He brought a tram to
Washermenpet police station via Broadway. When he was the mayor, he brought
water pipe connections to all parts of North Chennai. He also built overhead tanks.
Realizing that people needed good air for their health, he created parks in many
parts of the city so that people could have fun, get fresh air, and feel good. He is also
credited with starting the first flower exhibition on 27.02.1920.
The country praised him for wearing white clothes and showcasing the cultural
excellence of the country. He was also called as the 'Velludai Vendhar'.
