INTRODUCTION:
Paragraph 1:
The opening sentence is somewhat generic. Consider starting with a more specific
statement about the challenges faced by students with OFW parents.
The definition of "academics" from the Oxford English Dictionary is not essential and
can be removed.
Paragraph 2:
This paragraph introduces the central issue of the study but could be more
impactful. Consider mentioning the increasing number of OFWs and the potential
consequences for their children.
The statement about "lack of supervision, emotional distress, and decreased
motivation" should be supported by citations from the search results.
Paragraph 3:
This paragraph provides information about OSFI but lacks specific details. Consider
mentioning the percentage of students at OSFI who are children of OFWs.
The statement that "These hardships are inevitable for children of OFW parents" is
overly deterministic. Consider rephrasing it to acknowledge that some students may
thrive despite the challenges.
Paragraph 4:
This paragraph introduces the theoretical framework, which is good. However, the
connection between the theories and the specific research questions could be
clearer.
The paragraph primarily focuses on the negative impacts of parental absence.
Consider also mentioning potential positive outcomes, such as increased
independence or resilience.
Paragraph 5:
This paragraph emphasizes the seriousness of the problem but could be more
specific. Consider mentioning the potential for long-term educational setbacks and
mental health issues.
The paragraph could benefit from citations to support the claims about the negative
impacts of parental absence.
Paragraph 6:
This paragraph summarizes the aims of the study and its potential contributions.
However, it lacks a clear statement of the research questions.
The paragraph could be strengthened by mentioning the specific ways in which the
study will support educators and school administrators.
SUGGESTIONS:
Start with a compelling hook that captures the reader's attention and highlights the
importance of the study.
Strengthen the problem statement by providing more specific information about the
challenges faced by students with OFW parents.
Incorporate the search results more effectively, citing the relevant sources to
support the claims made throughout the text.
Provide a clearer connection to the theoretical framework, explaining how the
theories will guide the research.
Include a clear statement of the research questions.
Emphasize the potential positive outcomes of parental absence, such as increased
independence or resilience.
Provide more specific information about the ways in which the study will support
educators and school administrators.
Example:
The pursuit of economic opportunity increasingly leads parents to seek
employment overseas, reshaping family structures and leaving children to navigate
the complexities of transnational living. While the economic contributions of
Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are well-documented, the impact of parental
absence on the academic and socio-emotional well-being of their children warrants
in-depth investigation.
Parental absence, whether stemming from migration, separation, or other
circumstances, presents a growing global concern with significant implications for
children's development. While global reports highlight the urgency of building
resilient support systems for children facing adversity (UNICEF Innocenti, 2025), the
unique challenges experienced by children of migrant workers demand specific
attention.
In the Philippine context, this issue is particularly acute given the widespread
phenomenon of OFWs. The World Bank (2024) acknowledges the substantial
contribution of OFW remittances to the Philippine economy, yet recent research
reveals the potential psychological distress experienced by children left behind due
to family separation. Specifically, a 2024 study focusing on senior high school
students with OFW parents identified academic difficulties, including school-related
problems, a lack of parental guidance, and communication barriers (Taola et al.,
2024).These findings underscore the multifaceted nature of this issue and
emphasize the necessity for context-specific investigations. Building upon these
broader insights, this study delves into the lived experiences of students at Our
Saviour’s Foundation Incorporated, aiming to illuminate the specific challenges they
encounter within their immediate academic environment.
Our Saviour’s Foundation Inc. (OSFI) is committed to providing quality
education to its diverse student body. Recognizing the prevalence of students with
parents working abroad, this research seeks to understand their specific
experiences within the school setting. Anecdotal evidence suggests that while some
students demonstrate resilience in the face of parental absence, others struggle
with motivation, academic engagement, and overall well-being. Therefore, this
study seeks to identify the nuanced factors that contribute to these varying
outcomes.
To understand these experiences, this study aligns with Bronfenbrenner’s
Ecological Systems Theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979) and Attachment Theory (Bowlby,
1969). Bronfenbrenner's theory highlights the interconnected systems influencing a
child's development, from their immediate surroundings to broader cultural
contexts. Attachment Theory underscores the critical role of parent-child
relationships in shaping emotional security and well-being. Parental absence can
significantly impact students' academic performance and socio-emotional well-
being. The lack of consistent parental guidance may lead to difficulties with
motivation, time management, and coping with academic pressures. Furthermore,
the emotional strain of separation can contribute to anxiety and behavioral issues
that hinder academic success. Addressing these challenges requires a deep
understanding of the lived realities of these students.
By exploring the lives of these students, this study aims to provide valuable
insights for educators and school administrators at OSFI. The general objective is to
understand how having an OFW parent influences the academic performance and
overall development of OSFI students. The study's purpose is to uncover the lived
experiences of these students, providing a platform for their voices and
perspectives, and ultimately informing the development of targeted interventions
and support systems that effectively address their academic, emotional, and social
needs. This will help foster a more supportive environment within OSFI and
empower these students to achieve their full potential, despite the challenges of
parental absence.
Statement of the Problem
This is the improved SOP
This study aimed to understand how having an OFW parent influences the
academic performance of OSFI students. Specifically, it sought to answer the
following questions:
1. How does limited parental presence specifically influence the academic
motivation and classroom engagement of OSFI students?
2. What are the long-term effects of parental absence on the social-emotional
adjustment and academic resilience of OSFI students?
3. How do OSFI students perceive the sacrifices made by OFW parents, and how
does this perception influence their academic experiences?
Significance of the study
Instead of: "The significance of the study presented the purpose of the research..."
Try: "This study holds significance for its potential to inform targeted support
systems for students with OFW parents at Our Saviour’s Foundation Inc. (OSFI). By
examining the complex interplay of factors affecting their academic and socio-
emotional well-being within an ecological framework, this research aims to generate
actionable insights for students, teachers, parents, and future researchers.
Teachers: This study equips them with a deeper understanding of the nuances,
strengths, and challenges faced by OSFI students with OFW parents. Gaining
insights into how parental absence affects students' academic engagement,
motivation, and socio-emotional well-being allows teachers to create a more
inclusive and supportive classroom environment. This includes tailoring teaching
methods, providing individualized support, fostering open communication, and
identifying students who may benefit from additional resources.
OFW Parents: This study offers them a valuable opportunity to gain insight into
their children's lived experiences, understand the impact of their migration
decisions on their academic performance and overall development, and identify
effective strategies for maintaining strong family connections. The findings can
inform parenting strategies, communication patterns, and decisions about family
reunification, while also highlighting the importance of supporting their children's
emotional and psychological well-being.
Future Researchers: This study contributes to the existing knowledge base on
OFW parenting and student outcomes by providing a rich, qualitative understanding
of the experiences of students within the OSFI context. Employing an ecological
framework and exploring the interplay of factors at multiple levels, this research
can inform future studies examining the effectiveness of interventions, the
mediating role of mental health and social support, and the long-term impact of
parental migration. It can also guide the development of culturally appropriate
research methodologies and assessment tools.
