British Etiquette
1. APOLOGISING
English people like to apologize for any situation that affects, annoys or
offends another person.
2. QUEUING
Queuing is very common, it seeks to maintain order and make it fair for all
people…. It is frowned upon that someone does not join the queue or push.
3. PLEASE AND THANK YOU! MINDING YOUR PS AND QS
For the English it is very important that you say please and thank you when
you are receiving care from someone else. Saying please and thank you is
considered polite to the English people.
4. BEING TACTILE
Britain isn't a particularly tactile country. Because of this, some cultures think
that they are indifferent, however the British have emotions, they are simply
very good at hiding them.
5. DISCUSSING MONEY
It is rude to talk about money or ask about the price of things…. It's not okay,
in exception of something cheap.
6. CHIVALRY
In Britain chivalry is a trait that identifies men and culture, but it has to be
balanced so as not to offend independent women. For example: open the
door for a lady or hand over her seat.
7. RESPECT AUTHORITY FIGURES
In the UK you must respect, listen and obey authority figures (teacher, your
homestay or anyone in a position of authority).
8. HANDSHAKES
For the English, giving a good handshake is a sign of a good impression. For
example, if you offer a limp handshake or very strong it is a sign of a bad
impression.
9. HELPING AROUND THE HOUSE AND SCHOOL
It is good to offer help for the domestic duties of your home, even if you have
homework, it is likely that they do not need your help but it reflects your good
will.
10. SWITCH OFF YOUR MOBILE
In British culture, it is important to put digital devices aside to have a
conversation with people, especially at meal times, as it is a time to live
together.
11. TABLE MANNERS
Good manners at the dining table are very important in Britain.
Some of them are:
Never talk whilst there is food in your mouth.
Eat slowly. Eating quickly and/or overeating makes you appear greedy.
If you are right handed, your knife should be held in your right hand.
and your fork should be held in your left hand.
12. THE TOILET
In the UK, there are many words which refer to the toilet. ‘Loo’, ‘bathroom’ and
‘restroom’.
You may see some strange objects in toilets around the UK, particularly in
people’s homes. Some of the items are useful and others are for decoration.

13. NAMES
Before in Great Britain people were spoken to by their surname, today it is
becoming common to speak them by their first name. If we have doubts, let's
opt for formality. For example, Mr. or Mrs. and the name.
14. WEATHER
In Britain they love to talk about the weather. They say this allows them to
start a conversation on a variety of topics.
15. BRITISH HUMOUR AND JOKES
The British love jokes. It focuses on the positive, in the form of jokes and if
you laugh you will be loved and respected.
16. TEA
The British love tea and it is part of their everyday life. Taking afternoon tea is
a tradition there.They also have a polite way of drinking tea.
