29. Read the text carefully and answer the questions :
When anions and cations approach each other, the valence shell of anions are pulled towards the cation
nucleus and thus, the shape of the anion is deformed. The phenomenon of deformation of anion by a cation
is known as polarization and the ability of the cation to polarize the anion is called as polarizing power
of cation. Due to polarization, sharing of electrons occurs between two ions to some extent and the bond
shows some covalent character. The magnitude of polarization depends upon a number of factors.
(a) Out of AlCl3 and AlI3 which halides show maximum polarization? Why?
(b) Out of AlCl3 and CaCl2 which one is more covalent in nature?

Reactants and products coexist at equilibrium, so that the conversion of reactant to products is always

33. (a) Compound ‘A’ with the molecular formula C5H8 reacts with hydrogen in the presence of Lindlar’s catalyst
to form a compound B with the molecular formula C5 H10. A on reacting with sodium in liquid ammonia
forms a compound ‘C’ with the same molecular formula as that of B. Identify ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. Give
the chemical reactions involved.
(b) Write the chemical reaction involved in Kolbe’s electrolytic process. What are the products formed at
cathode and anode?
OR
In the presence of peroxide addition of HBr to propene takes place according to anti-markovnikov’s rule
but the peroxide effect is not seen in the case of HCI and HI. Explain.
