DEFINITE
INDEFINITE

a/an the
Specific or Definite Nouns: Use the for things, places, ideas, or
people that are clearly identified.
Example: The house is on the corner.

DEFINITE
Singular and Plural Nouns: Use the for both singular and plural
definite nouns.
Examples: The house is old. The houses are new.

Specific Groups or Categories: Use the for things that belong


to a particular group.
Example: The students in the class worked hard.

Known or Mentioned Before: Use the when the subject has


been previously introduced or is unique.
Examples:The sun is shining. The children were excited.

Superlative or Similar Adjectives: Use the with words like most


surprising or final.
Examples: The best idea won. The final moment arrived.

Comparative Structure: Use the in sentences like “The more...


the more..."
Example: The harder you try, the better you do.

Countries and Places: Use the with specific country names,


rivers, seas, and mountain ranges.
Examples: The United States, the Amazon, the Alps.
(No the for most countries: China, England.)

Geographical Features: Use the for deserts and island groups.


Examples: The Sahara, the Bahamas.
INDEFINITE
Non-Specific or General Nouns: Use "a" or "an" for any one among many or something not specific.
Examples: A book (any book), an animal (any animal).
Singular Nouns Only: Use "a" or "an" only with singular nouns, not plural nouns.
Examples: A cat, an apartment.
First Mention: Use "a" or "an" when referring to something for the first time.
Examples: Can I borrow a pen? An idea came to me.
Jobs or Roles: Use "a" or "an" to describe someone's job or function.
Examples: She’s a doctor. He’s an engineer.
Meaning "One": Use "a" or "an" to indicate a single item.
Example: I own a cat and two dogs.
Before Consonant or Vowel Sounds: Use "a" before consonant sounds, "an" before vowel sounds.
Examples: A boy, an hour, an apple.
With Adjectives: Match the article with the sound of the adjective when it comes before the noun.
Examples: An interesting book, a red apple.
Plural Form as "Some": Use "some" to indicate an unspecified amount in plural.

Plural Countable and Uncountable Nouns: Don't use an article when talking about

General Statements: Don’t use an article when making general statements.

NO Examples: Behaviour is influenced by colour.People react unconsciously to it.


Certain Places or Institutions: Don’t use an article in sentences like these about
places or institutions.

ARTICLE Examples: Did you go to university? (Were you a student?), What did you do in class
today?(What did you learn?)
Individual Islands or Mountains: Don’t use an article for individual islands or
mountains.
Examples: Majorca, Everest
All Members of a Group: Don’t use an article when talking about all members of a
group.
Example:Students should study hard. (All students)
