The Effects of Drinking Alcoholic Drinks Among College Students
Introduction
Alcohol is widely utilized in many cultures, by various populations, and in many
countries. The effects of alcohol usage can be seen in the development of a wide range
of human disorders, as well as social and economic losses in society. Alcohol abuse
has a negative impact on various aspects of health, including physical and emotional
well-being, especially among college students (Tandin Dorji, 2020).
In the student population around the world, higher rates of alcohol intake, episodes of
excessive consumption, and the use of dangerous use patterns have been observed.
The drinking of six (6) or more (60 grams of alcohol) in a single case is defined as an
episode of high alcohol use. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
(NIAAA) in the United States has highlighted the rising propensity of alcohol
consumption's negative effects in students (Maria Saridi, 2018). Consumption of
alcoholic beverages is a highly harmful habit, particularly among young individuals.
More importantly, there is mounting evidence that alcohol consumption has a rapid and
long-term harmful impact on the health of adolescents (T. LUECHA ET AL. 2018).
Individual risk factors, such as gender, age, and psychological characteristics, as well
as drinking intentions, have all been heavily emphasized in the study of risky alcohol
intake. Adolescents frequently report drinking for social enhancement, enjoyment,
image enhancement, or coping purposes; consequently, they may drink because the
favorable effects exceed the negative repercussions, at least in the short term (Lorant,
2013). In Europe, tobacco and alcohol are two of the leading causes of premature death
and morbidity. Tobacco and alcohol came in second and sixth position, respectively, in
a 2013 ranking of the top 25 biggest health risk factors in the globe. Alcohol is a
substance that is commonly consumed by teenagers in their early and late puberty
years, posing a severe public health risk (Zadarko-Domaradzka, 2018). In 2016, alcohol
use was linked to 4% of female deaths and 12% of male deaths worldwide. According to
a large-scale Ontario survey performed by the Toronto-based Centre for Addiction and
Mental Health in 2015, 39 percent of high-school students said they had consumed
alcohol in the preceding year (Aung Y, 2019). College drinking is a big societal problem
in South Korea; 60.4 percent of college students report binge drinking at least once a
month, and drinking is responsible for 10.8 percent of deaths among college students
(Sarah Soyeon Oh, 2019).
Alcohol use is a major public health concern and a primary source of suffering around
the world. The health and societal consequences of its use are particularly concerning.
Alcohol consumption patterns differ among continents and countries. According to
recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union (EU) is
the. world's most heavily drank region (Davoren, 2016). Alcohol is the most commonly
used drug on the planet. Despite their habit of consuming significant amounts of
alcohol, medical students should be mindful of its potentially dangerous characteristics.
As a result, a study of their drinking habits is critical for public health (Halina Piecewicz-
Szczęsna, 2017). The New Zealand Ministry of Health conducts surveys to determine
the frequency and amount of alcohol consumption, with the goal of identifying
hazardous drinking or drinking behavior that poses a risk of injury to the drinker
(socially, physically, or mentally) or others. The Ministry of Health in New Zealand
classified youth as a category at high risk of alcohol-related damage. A binge drinking
session, often known as "risky drinking," is defined as consuming five or more standard
drinks in one sitting (Campbell, 2019).
In the Philippines beer is the most popular drink, followed by lambanog (coconut
whiskey) and wine. Beer is a popular drink during birthday parties, fiestas, and other
gatherings. Even when there is no reason, many Filipinos gather in public places such
as the streets, bars, in front of their homes, and convenience stores to drink gin and
tonic, a cheaper alcoholic beverage (Salas, 2012).
Smoking and alcohol consumption among university students have been thoroughly
investigated as two distinct and independent variables in systematic study. Smoking
and drinking are not well understood as concurrent habits in university students, despite
evidence that they are connected in that they are complementary and have common
causes (R. Baring, 2017). A variety of psychosocial and environmental factors influence
young people's alcohol consumption. Recent study has increasingly focused on the
function of alcohol marketing exposure in general, as well as its effects on youth
drinking in particular. With a few exceptions, such study has mostly been limited to high-
income countries (Monica H Swahn1, 2013). Alcohol marketing has a strong link to
alcohol use and desire to consume. This may be exacerbated by the proximity of
academic institutions to convenience shopping and bars. Alcohol is widely available,
which reflects the high level of alcohol usage in Metro Manila's colleges. Outside of
randomly selected schools in Metropolitan Manila, this study found alcohol-related
marketing and availability to alcohol and liquor (Pagkatipunan, 2018). The impact of
drinking on students' academic performance at Jose Rizal Memorial State University
(Dipolog )ampus is investigated in this study. Alcohol is a drug that affects the central
nervous system (we're talking about beverage alcohol, also known as ethanol or ethyl
alcohol). As a result, the brain is where alcohol acts in the body. It reduces the activity
of some brain activities. As a result, alcohol is classed as a depressant of the central
nervous system (K. Government, 2021).
