Basic Rules

Rule (1)
A good translation requires the following elements:
(a) Accuracy (b) Clarity (c) Honesty (d)
Original Composition

Rule (2)
(a) A translator should consider the difference between the nature of the SL
(source language) and the TL (target language); in this case Arabic/
English.
(b) Arabic is a language of Redundancy; implies more explanation and division
of ideas/ sentences according to the required meaning.
(c) English is a language of Economy; implies more intensive information and
complex/ compound sentences that can include several ideas.
Rule (3)
In order to translate a headline from English into Arabic, a Nominal sentence ‫جملة‬
‫ اسمية‬is used.
Example: The Egyptian President visits France
Translation: ‫الرئيس المصرى يزور فرنسا‬
Rule (4)
In order to translate other sentences from English into Arabic, a Verbal sentence
‫جملة فعلية‬is used.
Example: The Egyptian President Abdelfattah Elsisi met with his French
counterpart Emanuel Macron
In Paris.
Translation: ‫التقى (اجتمع) الرئيس المصرى عبدالفتاح السيسى مع نظيره الفرنسى ايمانويل ماكرون‬
‫فى باريس‬
Rule (5)
In order to translate names of famous figures from English into Arabi, the position
is given first and then the name, not the opposite.
Rule (6)
The rules for ‫ تمييز األعداد‬should be considered.

Rule (7)
One of the major elements a translator should consider in translation; Arabic/
English or English/ Arabic is Fronting.
Fronting means that important information mentioned at the beginning of the
sentence should be kept without any changes.
Rule (8)
The Direct Speech; English/ Arabic or Arabic/ English should be translated in the
same form, without changes.
Rule (9)
The English Expression [There + (V. to be) ………………….. ] can be translated
into Arabic either as Nominal sentence or Verbal sentence according to the
meaning.
Never to be translated as .......... ‫هناك‬
Example (1) : There is a book on the table.
Correct Translation: ‫( على المنضدة كتاب‬nominal sentence).
Incorrect Translation: ‫هناك كتاب على المنضدة‬
Example (2) : There was quiet in the city after the end of the last acts of violence.
Correct Translation: ‫ساد المدينة الهدوء بعد انتهاء أحداث العنف األخيرة‬
Incorrect Translation: ............................ ‫كان هناك هدوء فى المدينة‬
Rule (10)
Active and Passive Voice is a common structure in both English and Arabic.
(a) In order to translate a Passive sentence form English into Arabic, where the
subject is not mentioned, translate it into Arabic as Passive Voice.
Example: Thousands of Japanese citizens were killed in Tsunami.
Correct Translation: ‫قتل االف المواطنين اليابانيين فى تسونامى‬
(b) In order to translate a Passive sentence from English into Arabic, where the
subject is mentioned, translate it into Arabic as Active Voice.
Example: Many Palestinian protesters were arrested by the Israeli occupation
forces.
Correct Translation: ‫اعتقلت (ألقت القبض على) قوات االحتالل االسرائيلى العديد من المتظاهرين‬
‫الفلسطينيين‬
Incorrect Translation: )‫اعتقل (ألقى القبض على) العديد من الفلسطينيين من قبل (من خالل‬
‫(بواسطة) قوات االحتالل االسرائيلى‬
Basic Structures

1. The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture will be in charge of implementation of


the project.
Correct Translation: ‫تشرف وزارة الزراعة المصرية على تنفيذ المشروع‬
Incorrect Translation: ‫يتم االشراف على تنفيذ المشروع من قبل وزارة الزراعة المصرية‬
2. This writer lacks patience and precision, qualities essential for a successful
translator.
Correct translation: ‫ وهى مقومات المترجم الناجح‬, ‫يفتفر هذا الكاتب الى الصبر والدقة‬
Incorrect Translation: ‫ وهى مقومات المترجم الناجح‬,‫هذا الكاتب يفتقر الى الصبر والدقة‬
3. Perseverance is the prime factor for success.
Correct Translation: ‫المثابرة أولى مقومات النجاح‬
Incorrect Translation: ‫تعتبر المثابرة هى أولى مقومات النجاح‬
4. The architect submitted the blueprints of his project, which was thus
accepted by the committee.
Correct Translation: .‫ والذى قبلته اللجنة فيما بعد‬, ‫وضع المهندس التصميمات الخاصة بمشروعه‬
Incorrect Translation: .‫والذى قبل بواسطة اللجنة‬
5. The commander briefed his soldiers on the battle conditions.
Correct Translation: ‫أحاط القائد جنوده علما بظروف المعركة‬
Incorrect Translation: .‫أخبر القائد جنوده بموجز عن ظروف المعركة‬
6. Yemen is on the brink of civil war.
‫اليمن على شفا (حافة) حرب أهلية‬

7. For this purpose (To this end), FAO has launched a project aimed at
enhancing food security for Egyptian families.
.‫ أطلقت الفاو مشروعا يهدف الى تعزيز األمن الغذائى لألسر المصرية‬, ‫ولتحقيق هذه الغاية‬

8. Iran was convicted by a Security Council resolution.


.‫أصدر مجلس األمن قرار ادانة بحق ايران‬
9. To impose a new fait accompli ‫فرض أمر واقع جديد‬

10.To rule out the possibility of ……………… ‫اسبعاد فرضية‬

11.Lifting the economic sanctions imposed on Cuba by the US, once an


agreement is reached.

‫رفع العقوبات االقتصادية المفروضة على كوبا بمجرد التوصل الى اتفاق‬
