Centre Number : _______________________________________
CALA Type : Practical
Level : Form Four
Topic : Respiratory System
Duration : Three Weeks
Background
Rufaro High School biology pass rate is lower than expected. This is partly due to lack of models
in the teaching of the subject, because they cannot afford to buy industrially produced models.
You the candidate are to assemble a model of the respiratory system using locally available
materials in order to solve the problem of shortage of models.
Cala Description
Week One
You, as the candidate are expected to research on the respiratory system. Present your research in
a two page write up showing detailed diagrams of the human respiratory system and the model
you intend to make.
Week Two
You are to assemble the components of the respiratory system
Week Three
You are to present a fully functional model of the respiratory system
Cala Tips
The model should be simple made from recyclable locally available materials. Durability earns
an extra mark

Facilitator’s notes
Facilitator issues learners with the CALA Learner’s guide , marking guide and
background
Learners research on how the respiratory system works and how models of the system
are made and presents results to the facilitator in the first week.
In the second week learners assemble the model
In the third week learners finish the model and present it
