Classwork:
Complete a diagram of the
respiratory system.
Label key parts and write
short descriptions of their
functions.
Homework:
Research and compare how
the respiratory system of a
human differs from that of a
fish or an insect.
PLENARY: Ask learners to explain the process of breathing and how oxygen gets into the blood.
SCIENCE IN CONTEXT: You're a mountaineer climbing a high altitude. Analyze how the
respiratory system adapts to provide enough oxygen at high altitudes.
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES: Many animals have different respiratory systems. Have learners
research an animal with a different respiratory system (e.g., fish with gills) and present their
findings with diagrams comparing the human and animal respiratory systems.
TEACHER’S REFLECTION:
Respiratory System Overview
Parts of the Respiratory System:
1. Nose/Nasal Cavity – Filters and warms the air before it enters the lungs.
2. Trachea – The windpipe that directs air to the lungs.
3. Bronchi – Two large tubes branching from the trachea into each lung.
4. Lungs – Organs where gas exchange occurs.
5. Alveoli – Tiny air sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
6. Diaphragm – A muscle that contracts and relaxes to enable breathing.
How the Respiratory System Works:
1. Air enters through the nose or mouth.
2. The air travels down the trachea to the bronchi.
3. It enters the lungs and reaches the alveoli.
4. Oxygen passes into the bloodstream through capillaries.
5. Carbon dioxide is removed from the blood and exhaled.
Process of Breathing:
1. Inhalation (breathing in):
- Diaphragm contracts and moves downward
- Rib cage expands
- Air enters lungs
2. Exhalation (breathing out):
- Diaphragm relaxes and moves upward
- Rib cage decreases
- Air leaves lungs
Types of Respiration:
1. Aerobic Respiration: Using oxygen to produce energy
2. Anaerobic Respiration: Without oxygen
Importance of Oxygen:
1. Energy production
2. Cell growth and repair
3. Brain function
Diseases and Disorders:
1. Asthma
2. Bronchitis
3. Pneumonia
4. Lung Cancer
Ways to Keep Respiratory System Healthy:
1. Exercise regularly
2. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
3. Wear masks in polluted areas
4. Stay hydrated
5. Get enough sleep
