I. LEARNING CONTENT
Understanding the Standards to Create a Positive Learning Environment

II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:
A. identify standards that foster positive learning environment for students.
B. develop appreciation on the importance of creating a conducive environment to
boost the teaching and learning process; and
C. apply strategies for establishing and maintaining a positive learning environment
to promote academic excellence and character development.

III. MOTIVATIONAL ACTIVITY

A. “Peel the Cabbage” Instructions
1. Distribute the Cabbage: Give the first student in the front row a paper
cabbage with peelable strips.
2. Play the Music: Start playing a song while the students pass the cabbage
around the room.
3. Peel and Answer: When the music stops, the student holding the cabbage
peels off a strip and answers the question based on their past learning
experiences.
4. Enhance the Discussion: As students share their answers, the teacher will add
comments and insights to enrich the discussion.
B. Questions:
1. Think about a time when you felt really comfortable and focused in class.
What was it about that environment that made learning easier for you?
2. Why do you think some students participate more in certain classes than
others? What might encourage or discourage them from speaking up?
3. Have you ever been in a situation where the classroom atmosphere made it
hard to concentrate? What do you think caused that, and how could it have
been different?
4. Imagine you’re a teacher. What kind of classroom would you create to make
sure every student feels welcome and ready to learn?
5. What do you think makes a teacher’s feedback or instructions more effective?
How do you like to receive feedback?
6. Have you noticed how some classrooms seem more lively and engaged than
others? What do you think makes the difference?
7. Why do you think certain rules or routines in the classroom are important?
Can you think of any that help students feel more comfortable or focused?
8. Think about a time when a group project went really well. What aspects of the
environment or group dynamics made it successful?
9. How do you think the way a classroom is arranged—like the seating or the
decorations—affects how students feel and learn?
10. If you were to design a classroom from scratch, what are the top three things
you would include to make it a great place to learn?
IV. DISCUSSION

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The learning environment is very
important in teaching and learning. Before the
school year starts, all teachers are busy
preparing their classrooms, putting visuals on
classroom walls, arranging chairs and tables,
preparing visual aids, and changing bulletin
board displays. They all want their classrooms
to be attractive to the learners when they come
to school. Teachers believe that the physical
environment of the classroom could influence their students to learn. While this could be true,
learning environment is more than the physical environment that teachers prepare for the
students. The learning environment includes the physical classroom environment, the intellectual
environment and the emotional environment that teachers and learners experience in school. It is
influential in creating a positive atmosphere of learning in school and it is the main source of
school culture.

3 BASIC TYPES OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:

A. Physical Environment
A physical learning environment encompasses all the tangible aspects of a learning space.
This includes the physical layout and design of classrooms, from vibrant and playful settings in
elementary schools to more structured arrangements in colleges and universities. Physical
environments also extend to home and distance-learning setups, where creating a distinct and
comfortable learning space free from distraction has become increasingly important.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic prompted many students to engage in online learning
environments, which, in turn, has caused teachers to implement tools like digital learning
experience management systems and online courses.
B. Psychological Environment
An effective psychological environment encourages students to engage with the curriculum
and each other in ways that enhance their personal and professional development. By building
trust with students and fostering a safe, inviting space, teachers can create a positive learning
environment where students have more opportunities to participate, ask questions, and receive
feedback.
This type of environment can enable students to take risks or make mistakes more
confidently, without fear of rejection. Learners are more likely to feel comfortable and valued in
well-nurtured psychological environments.
C. Emotional Environment
School can be stressful at any age, which is why students need a positive emotional
environment that supports their educational path. Part of creating a psychological environment’s
safe space means addressing the emotional environment’s need for self-expression and the
freedom to express emotions.
By supporting students’ emotional needs, teachers can help enhance their students’
emotional intelligence, boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Some ways that teachers can
maintain a thriving emotional learning environment include establishing routines that students
can rely on, encouraging diversity, and celebrating student achievements.

The following are standards that teachers need to know and practice in order to
provide a positive learning environment for students on any level:
A. UNDERSTAND VARIOUS TYPES OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THAT
ACCOMMODATE VARIOUS NEEDS AND PROMOTE DEVELOPMENT OF
DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEARNERS.
Teachers should understand different educational environments that influence the
learners' development. This educational environment refers to the physical and psychological
environment provided by the school. The students need to study in a safe environment and
conducive classrooms equipped with instructional materials needed for each subject. The
psychological environment of the school should promote a climate of high expectations,
appreciation of diversity, and respect for learner's dignity. It is important for teachers to promote
a learning environment that values individual ideas, develops individual talent, and provides
venue for intellectual discussions and activities.
1. A teacher from Bonifacio, Misamis
Occidental engage his students in his lessons using
song and dance.

2. Ligao National High School encourages students to

make their own reading corner/mini-library in the classroom.

B. UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF VARIOUS AGENCIES, FAMILIES, AND

COMMUNITIES IN SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF LEARNERS.
Teachers should work closely with different stakeholders. They should develop good
relationship and partnership with parents, community leaders, and with several public and private
institutions surrounding their school. Teachers should develop programs and projects that
promote quality education and positive development of learners where they can work with
individuals and institutions.

2. Community Engagement (LNHS Community Immersion for HUMMS Students

2019)

C. DESIGN LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES THAT NURTURE LEARNERS'

TALENTS, CRITICAL THINKING, AND CREATIVITY.
Teachers should do their best to design learning environment that nurtures individual
talent, critical thinking, and creativity. This means providing an effective and efficient student
support programs and instructional support programs that nurtures the potential of the students to
learn. It is important for teachers to engage their students in meaningful learning and provide
opportunities for students to share ideas and develop new forms of knowledge.

3. Interactive Notebooks

D. CREATE SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL LEARNERS.

Teachers need to create a safe physical and psychological learning environment for their
learners. Brain-based principles tell us that learners learn best when they feel safe and secured.
E. CREATE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THAT PROMOTE
INTERCULTURAL EXCHANGE AMONG LEARNERS.
Teachers should teach their students to value individual differences and cultural diversity.
They need to expose their students to different activities and programs that promote interaction
among students. It is important for students to develop high level of cultural literacy. Brodin
(2010) observed that the need for educating all citizens, and providing them with information
about other cultures and countries has become imperative. The thrust of the pre- service teacher
education curriculum should be focused on the development of teachers who could serve as
facilitators for understanding various cultures and ideas among different countries (Pawilen et al.
2009). Teaching Profession
F. COMMIT TO PROMOTE A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT
PROMOTES RESPECT, EQUITY, AND CLIMATE OF HIGH
EXPECTATIONS.
Teachers should ensure that their classes, activities, programs, and rules promote respect,
equity, and a climate of high expectation. Students should be taught to respect the rights of other
people. They should learn how to value the dignity of every human being, and they should
commit themselves to the pursuit of academic excellence.
Since many children came from various cultural backgrounds and socio- economic status,
teacher should be fair and just in dealing with young children. Teachers should avoid culturally
biased statements and practices that may lead to the negative experience of schooling for young
children. Favoritism should be avoided and each child should be treated equally with respect.

V. REFLECTION
Teaching and learning are multifaceted processes. Given this complexity, it can be
challenging, even daunting, for educators to make each day in the classroom both fruitful and
meaningful. This challenge arises because students differ in their intelligences, interests, and
needs. Therefore, it is crucial for teachers to create a conducive environment that welcomes
diverse learners and actively engages them in the pedagogical process.
From this lesson, I have realized that the learning environment is indeed a crucial factor
for maximizing students' potential. It is essential to address the physical, psychological, and
emotional aspects of the environment to create a safe and comfortable space where learners can
exchange ideas, collaborate, and acquire knowledge under their teacher's guidance. As a pre-
service teacher, I must begin developing plans and strategies to achieve this from the outset.
In summary, I understand that students’ learning does not solely depend on the teacher’s
knowledge and skills. A teacher must also create a positive learning environment to ensure that
students feel welcome and valued. This fosters an eagerness to attend school in students and
encourages them to engage in their studies each day.
