Course Description
This course aims to guide undergraduate students to develop critical thinking and creativity as
they utilize science in understanding various human conditions and social issues, explore the role of
Science and Technology in nation building, analyze scientific ideas, theories, innovations, research
and practices, and discover technological advancements brought by science to the society. In
addition, students will develop deep appreciation and critical understanding of the role of Science
and Technology in the development of people and society.

Course Learning Outcomes


CLO1: Demonstrate the theoretical and practical- understanding of STS as a course and as a
field of study.
CLO2: Evaluate government policies pertaining to science and technology in terms of their
contributions to nation building.
CLO3: Recognize the value of scientific revolution since it significantly changed how people study
science and do scientific activities from thought experiments to data driven and experiment
based ideas.
CLO4: Appreciate the concept of indigenous science in the development of Science and Technology
in the Philippines.
CLO5: Create an advocacy campaign on how communities help mitigate the hazards caused by
technology abuse.
CL06: Apply the concept of science education to everyday life.
CL07: Put into practice the value of preservation & conservation of our biodiversity for a healthy and
more humane society.

WEEK 1: General Concepts & Historical Events in Science, Technology, Society
Lesson 1: Intellectual revolutions that defined society
LO1: Discuss how the ideas postulated by Copernicus, Darwin, and Freud contributed to the spark of scientific
revolution
LO2: Analyze how scientific revolution is done in various parts of the world like in Latin America, East Asia,
Middle East, and Africa
Lesson 2: Science Technology & Nation-building
LO1: Discuss the role of Science and Technology in Philippine nation- building.
LO2: Identify actual Science and Technology policies of the government and appraise their impact in the
development of the Filipino nation

WEEK 2: General Concepts & Historical Events in Science, Technology, Society


Lesson 1: Indigenous Science & Technology in the Philippines
LO1: Discuss the concept of indigenous science.
LO2: Discuss the contribution of Indigenous Science in the development of Science and Technology in the
Philippines
Lesson 2: Human Flourishing
LO1: Identify different conceptions of human flourishing.
LO2: Determine the development of scientific method and validity of science and critic human flourishing vis-à-
vis progress of Science and Technology to be able to define for themselves the meaning of a good life.

WEEK 3: Science, Technology & Human Condition


Lesson 1: Technology as a way of revealing
LO1: Explain the concept of human condition before and after science and technology.
LO2: Name ways on how technology aided in revealing the truth about the human being.
Lesson 2: The Good Life
LO1: Examine what is meant by a good life
LO2: Identify how humans attempt to attain what is deemed to be a good life and recognize possibilities
available to human being to attain the good life.
WEEK 4: Science, Technology & Human Conditions
Lesson 1: When Humanity and Technology Cross
LO1: Discuss the different technological advancements in the society.
LO2: Discuss the effects of the interplay between technology and humanity through the dilemma(s)
they face.
Lesson 2: The Information Age
LO1: Identify the contributions of the technological advances of the Information Age.
LO2: Understand the factors that need to be considered in checking website sources.

WEEK 5: Science, Health and Politics


Lesson 1: Biodiversity & Healthy Society
LO1: Determine the interrelatedness of society, environment, and health.
LO2: Create a diagram that would show the relatedness of species in forming up a diverse and
healthy society, without compromising one another.
LO3: Identify everyday tasks and evaluate whether they contribute to the wellness and health of
biodiversity and society or not.
Lesson 2: Genetically Modified Organisms
LO1 Identify issues on Genetically Modified Organisms.
LO2 Discuss different implications and impact of GMO’s.
LO3: Create a research paper on the impact of GMO’s in the Philippine context.

WEEK 6: Science, Health and Politics


Lesson 1: Aspects of Gene Therapy
LO1: Describe Gene Therapy and its various forms.
LO2: Assess the issue’s potential benefits and detriments to global heath.

LO1: Identify the causes of climate change
LO2: Understand the effects of climate change on the society; and
LO3: Illustrate how the community helps in mitigating the hazards caused by climate change.
