Objective
To inform customers that all Large Bore and, now, Standard Bore NOV Lower IBOP Valves comply with
API Specification 7-1, Class 2 requirements. The latest revision of this bulletin updates the list of
Affected Assemblies.

NOV previously manufactured lower IBOP valves to API Specification 7, 39th edition and earlier. In 2012,
NOV began to stamp lower IBOP valves with “Class 1” since “Class 2” valves required additional design
verification testing. Per API Specification 7-1, Class 2 valves require two design verification tests: “Design
verification test for stem-seal external pressure” and “Design verification test for sealing temperature
range”. Per API Specification 7-1, the Service class defined as “Class 1”, applies to surface only (i.e.
Upper IBOP valves), and “Class 2” applies to surface and downhole (i.e. Lower IBOP valves).
Solution
The design verification testing for the Large Bore was completed, as noted in Revision 01 of this product
bulletin, and Standard Bore NOV valves are now complete. The valves are retroactively compliant with
“Class 2” requirements. The successful test results are based on the existing design, therefore no design
changes are required.
NOV is currently updating all Large Bore and Standard Bore NOV Lower IBOP Valves documentation (i.e.
drawings and engineering report). NOV is also working with third-party agencies to revise the Service
class to “Class 2” on the design approval documentation. As new drawings will not be provided to
owners of existing Lower IBOP Valves, this product bulletin should be considered validation of Class 2
compliance.
