Objective: Advise customers of potential premature failure of Sola (Emerson EGS) 10 Amp SDN
compact series power supplies. Inform customers of the manufacturer’s strategy for
replacement of affected deployed units.
Issue: Sola (Emerson EGS) has advised that the 10 Amp power supplies (manufacturer part
number: SDN10-24-100C) are exhibiting failures. Sola (Emerson EGS) have
concluded that a semiconductor (MOSFET) device, internal to the power supplies, is
under-rated for the required voltage operating range of the device. Sola (Emerson
EGS) have determined that with certain configurations and operating conditions where
the input voltage is above 200 VAC there is a higher potential for the power supply to
fail.
Solution: In August 2012 Sola (Emerson EGS) implemented a component change with a more
robust MOSFET that eliminated this failure mode for the 24 VDC Power Supplies SDN
Compact Series.
Sola (Emerson EGS) have offered to replace all affected power supplies manufactured
between January 1, 2008 and July 30, 2012.
The supply of replacement modules to customers will be coordinated through the Sola
(Emerson EGS) North American office.
For customers with affected power supplies please use the following process as listed
within the Appendix of this document. All requests for replacement power supplies
must be made prior to the end of 2013.
Failure to follow the recommendations and/or guidance in NOV Product Bulletins may result in
death, bodily injury and/or property damage.
Operators should also refer to previous NOV Product Information Bulletins and Safety Alerts at
http://www.nov.com/drilling for additional information related to this issue and information regarding
safe operation, maintenance, and inspection criteria.
Please contact your local National Oilwell Varco (NOV) Service Center if you have any questions
regarding this product bulletin.

Appendix:
1. Physically locate the 10 Amp Sola (Emerson EGS) Power supplies within the National
Oilwell Varco supplied equipment (as an example see Fig. 1 below). Confirm the installed
Sola model number as SDN10-24-100C.
Fig. 1
2. Locate the manufacturer’s identification label on the side of the power supply (see Fig. 2
below)
Fig. 2
3. Verify that the manufacturing date code listed on the label falls between weeks 1 of 2008 to
week 30 of 2012 - this is represented by the following code ranges:
Per example Fig.1: PH = factory code
14 = 14th week
11 = 2011 calendar year
If a power supply has a date code between PH0108XXXX and PH3012XXXX it may fail due
to this reported issue.
