Product Bulletin No.: 77778734 Rev.: 1 HPS Series Top Drives

This document summarizes an update to a safety alert regarding an incident where a retractable dolly moved unintentionally due to rolling motion at sea. It recommends replacing the single load holding valve with a dual load holding valve to keep the dolly securely in the retracted and extended positions. Operators are advised to contact their local NOV service representative to order the new valve and hose, and never work between the top drive and dolly without first securing them from movement.

Product Bulletin No.

: 77778734
Rev.: 1
HPS Series Top Drives
Date: 28.09.2011

Subject: Dual load holding valve available for HPS Retractable Dolly

Product Model: HPS-series Top Drives.

Effectivity: HPS Top Drives w/Retractable Dolly.

Affected
Assemblies: Retractable Dolly

Objective: To advice customers of a dual load holding valve available for the
Retractable Dolly.

Issue: This is an update of Safety Alert 77778734 rev 0 regarding an incident

where the Retractable Dolly moved unintentionally from its retracted and
extended position due to the rolling motion of the rig in a heavy sea state.
A long term solution is now available for order.

Solution: NOV recommends that the single load holding valve is replaced with a
dual load holding valve. This would keep the dolly in both retracted and
extended position. When this is installed some piping needs to be
removed and replaced by a hose. For more information regarding this
upgrade contact your local NOV service representative.

NOV would also point out that under no circumstances shall personnel
work between the Top Drive and Dolly without first having secured the Top
Drive/Dolly from moving.
