Program notes
1. Sonntag, Op. 47, No. 3 ……………………………………………………… Johannes Brahms

2. Du bist die Ruh, Op. 59, No. 3 ……………………………………………… Franz Schubert

Originally from a poem by the German poet, Friedrich Ruckert, this piece by Schubert is
one of his most romantic and emotional in his collection. Whilst the poem expresses the true
depth and pain of a familiar love, Schubert uses a light and subtle approach in the piano
accompaniment to enhance the sweetness of the melody in the vocal line.

3. La Boheme: Quando m’en vo ………………………………………………. Giacomo Puccini

4. Ahay Tuburan ………………………………………………………… arr. by Priscilla Magdamo

This Hiligaynon folk song tells of the somber reality of a person’s coming of age. This
melancholic arrangement perfectly captures the sorrow and weariness of having to leave
one’s birthplace when life calls for it. The song ends with a somehow hopeful note that the
person might someday come back home.

5. Les Papillons ………………………………………………………………… Ernest Chausson

6. Mandoline ……………………………………………………………………. Gabriel Fauré
7. Himutok ………………………………………………………………………. Nicanor Abelardo

‘Himutok’ is a Filipino term that translates to ‘disappointment’, ‘complaint’, or ‘distress’. In

this dolorous piece by Abelardo, a woman laments her misery and seemingly unrequited
love – seeking compassion from her beloved. As such, anyone performing this piece is
expected to portray that same call of distress; to have her feelings reciprocated once and for
all.

8. An Chloe ……………………………………………………………… Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

In this composition, Mozart gives life to a poem originally written by Johann Georg
Jocabi. The poem’s title translates to ‘To Chloe’; Chloe being a character in an ancient
Greek novel. This composition demands a high level of flexibility and grace from the
performer as she is expected to hit a high Ab in the latter part of the piece.

9. Oliver Cromwell ………………………………………………………... Benjamin Britten

10. A Simple Song (from Mass) ……………………………………….….. Leonard Bernstein
11. Bachianas Brasileiras ……………………………………………….... Heitor Villa-Lobos
12. Elle a fui, la tourterelle (from Les Contes d’Hoffmann) …………… Jacques Offenbach
13. Leron, Leron, Sinta ……………………………………………………. Lucio D. San Pedro
