Learning Activity 1.5 - Resonance

This document describes an experiment to calculate the speed of sound in air using a closed air column. The purpose is stated as calculating the speed of sound using resonant lengths of a closed air column. Materials needed are a tube, water, graduated cylinder, tuning fork, and ruler. The method involves filling a cylinder with water, placing a tube in the water to form a closed end, sounding a tuning fork near the open end of the tube, and measuring resonant lengths to calculate wavelength and speed of sound using equations provided. Analysis and calculations are described to determine speed from resonant lengths and compare to theoretical speed of sound in air.

Speed of sound in air using a closed air column lab

Your task is to read through the lab worksheet and then watch the video. You will not
be completing the actual experiment, rather you will be watching the video which
shows the set up of the apparatus and the experimental observations.

Purpose Materials Apparatus Method Analysis Conclusion

To calculate the speed of sound in air using the resonant lengths of a closed air
column.

tube, water, graduated cylinder, tuning fork, ruler

1. Fill a graduated cylinder with water.

2. Place a tube inside (making the end in the water a closed end).

3. Sound the tuning fork (f = 1024 Hz).

4. Place it close to the open end of the closed air column.

5. Raise it from the water until you hear a loud sound (resonance).

6. Measure the length of the air column. This is the resonant length (L1).

7. Repeat the procedure until you hear the second resonant length (L2).

1. Using the equations for the resonant lengths, calculate the wavelength (in
metres). Do this for both L1 and L2.

2. Using the universal wave equation (v = f λ) (v=fλ), calculate the speed of
sound in air using the frequency of the tuning fork (f = 1024 Hz) and the
wavelength calculated in Question 1.

3. Find the theoretical speed in air at 23.0 °C using the equation:

m m
vsound = 332 + (0.59 T vsound=332ms+(0.59ms°C)T
s s°C )

4. Find the percent error for both your experimental speed of sound
calculations compared to the theoretical speed of sound in air. Use the
formula:
experimental value − theoretical value
percent error = × 100% percent error=experimental value − theoretical valuetheoretical value×100%
theoretical value

Write your own conclusion for the experiment based on the purpose of the lab and
your results.
