Structural Design Criteria and Analysis

The document outlines design criteria and specifications for a structural project, including material strengths, loading criteria, and dimensions for beams and columns. It details the process for verifying the use of a simplified method for calculating moments and shears in a continuous beam, as well as the design of a one-way continuous slab. Additionally, it includes calculations for unfactored and factored loads, structural analysis, and design moment capacities.

Problem Statement. Verify whether the simplified method maybe used in determining the
moments and shear of the continuous beam 2B-1/1 to 2B-1/2. After determining the factored
moments and shears, design only the end support section at the continuous end of beam
2B-1/1 for flexure. After designing the said section of the beam, determine its design moment
capacity.
Design of One-way Continuous Slab

1. Check if one-way slab or two-way slab

For 2S1 La1 ≔ 3.50 m + 0.20 m - 0.30 m - 0.15 m = 3.25 m

Lb1 ≔ 8.00 m + 0.20 m - 0.30 m - 0.15 m = 7.75 m
La1
m1 ≔ ―― = 0.419
Lb1
if ⎛⎝m1 ≤ 0.50 , “one-way slab” , “two-way slab”⎞⎠ = “one-way slab”

For 2S2 La2 ≔ 3.50 m - 0.15 m - 0.15 m = 3.2 m

Lb2 ≔ 8.00 m + 0.20 m - 0.30 m - 0.15 m = 7.75 m
La2
m1 ≔ ―― = 0.413
Lb2
if ⎛⎝m1 ≤ 0.50 , “one-way slab” , “two-way slab”⎞⎠ = “one-way slab”
2. Minimum slab thickness

fy ≔ 275 MPa

Considering support condition: one end continuous

Ln ≔ max ⎛⎝La1 , La2⎞⎠ = 3.25 m (the greatest value between 3.25m and 3.20m)

Ln ⎛ fy ⎞
hmin ≔ ― ⋅ ⎜0.4 + ―――― ⎟ = 107.37 mm
24 ⎝ 700 MPa ⎠

h = 125 mm

3. Compute the unfactored loads to be carried by the slab.

kN kN
wD ≔ ((0.48 + 1.53 + 23.6 ⋅ 0.125)) ――2
⋅ 1 m = 4.96 ――
m m
kN kN
wL ≔ 4.80 ―― ⋅ 1 m = 4.8 ――
m2 m

4. Compute the factored loads to be carried by the slab.

kN
wu ≔ 1.2 ⋅ wD + 1.6 ⋅ wL wu = 13.632 ――
m
5. Structural Analysis. Check if simplified method can be used:

Condition Remarks
1. Members are prismatic. Yes
2. Loads are uniformly distributed. Yes
3. LL ≤ 3 ⋅ DL LL ≔ 4.80 Yes
DL ≔ 0.48 + 1.53 + 23.6 ⋅ 0.125 = 4.96
3 ⋅ DL = 14.88

4. There are at least two spans

5. The longer of 2 adjacent spans does not exceed the shorter by more than Yes
20% 3.25 - 3.20
―――― ⋅ 100 = 1.562
3.20
Since all conditions are met, the simplified method maybe used.
6. Calculate the design moments.

Considering 1 m strip:
Load Pressure in the continuous slab

Equivalent uniformly distributed load in the slab.
