Self-Learning Module for Grade 11

EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

HOW ANIMALS SURVIVE

How will you use this module?

Here are some reminders to remember as you go through this module.
1. Read and follow the instructions carefully.
2. Answer the pre-test first before reading the content of the module.
3. Take down notes and record points for clarification.
4. Always aim to get at least 75% of the total number of items given
5. Be sure to answer the post test at the end of the module.

Competency: Explain the different metabolic processes involved in the various organ
systems S11/12LT -IIIaj-20.3

Objectives:
1. Identify the part of the organ system for circulation.
2. Describe the three kinds of body circulation.
3. Explain the metabolic process happens during the circulation of blood via
the internal transport system.

Introduction:
The blood circulatory system (cardiovascular system) consists of the heart and
the blood vessels running through the entire body. Blood carries things to each cell that
are needed. These things include oxygen and nutrients. In exchange, the blood picks up
waste from the cells, including carbon dioxide, heat and excess water. The heart pumps
blood throughout the body through a closed system of tubes. These tubes that carry the
blood are called blood vessels. There are three types of blood vessels: arteries, veins,
and capillaries. The arteries carry blood away from the heart; the veins carry it back to
the heart.

Pre Test
Directions: Directions: Read each statement and choose the letter of the correct
answer. Shade the circle that corresponds to the correct answer.

1.The movement of the blood through the heart and body is called
A B C D A. Circulation
B. Heart pump
C. Locomotion
D. Ventriculation
2. With circulation, the blood provides your body with
A. Carbon dioxide
A B C D B. Hydrogen
C. Nitrogen
D. Oxygen
3. These are tubes that carry back to the heart
A B C D A. Arteries
B. Atriums
C. Veins
D. Ventricles
4. What is the function of the blood vessels and capillaries?
A B C D A. They pump blood to the heart.
B. They filter impurities from the blood.
C. They carry blood to all parts of the body.
D. They carry messages from the brain to the muscles.
5. What happens to blood when it is pumped into the thin-walled blood
eA B C D vessels of the lungs?
A. Platelets are exchanged for plasma.
B. Carbon dioxide is replaced with oxygen
C. Blood fills the lungs and causes coughing
D.Nothing -- the lungs are just a place blood goes through
on its way back to the heart.

EXPLORE

How the heart works

1. The heart receives oxygen-deficient blood from the body into the right upper
atrium.

2. When the heart contracts, the right lower ventricle will pump the blood into the
lungs, where the carbon dioxide is exchanged for oxygen.

3. After the exchange, the blood containing fresh oxygen flows into the left upper
atrium.

4. Oxygen-rich blood flows from the left upper atrium into the left lower ventricle.

5. When the heart contracts, the left lower ventricle will force the blood out to the
body through a network of arteries.

ACTIVITY 2
Match each term in Column A with its description in Column B. Write the correct letter in
the space provided.
Column A Column B

________ 1. circulation a) carry blood away from the heart

________ 2. heart b) pumps blood

________ 3. arteries c) connect arteries and veins

________ 4. veins d) transport of materials in living things

________ 5. capillaries e) carry blood back to the heart

EXPLAIN
ACTIVITY 3

Write the correct term in each blank to answer the questions or complete the sentence.
Choose your answer in the box.
Pulmonary circulation Heart Capillaries
Blood Arteries Veins
Circulatory system

1. What pumps blood through your body? ______________

2. Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart are
called _______________.

3. Vessels that carry blood back to the heart are called

______________.

4. Blood moves from arteries to veins through tiny blood

vessels called ________________.

5. The heart, blood vessels and

blood make up the
______________________.
ELABORATE

The essential components of the human cardiovascular system are the heart, blood and blood

vessels. It includes the pulmonary circulation, a "loop" through the lungs where blood is oxygenated;
and the systemic circulation, a "loop" through the rest of the body to provide oxygenated blood.

ACTIVITY 4
Write S if the statement is in the Systemic circulation, and P for pulmonary circulation.

_____ 1. There the blood drops off oxygen, nutrients and other important substances
and picks up carbon dioxide and waste products.
_____2. The right ventricle pumps low-oxygen blood into the pulmonary artery, which
branches off into smaller and smaller arteries and capillaries.
_____ 3. The fresh oxygen we breathe in enters the blood. At the same time, carbon
dioxide is released from the blood.
_____ 4. The blood passes through the left atrium going to the aorta.
_____5. The blood, which is now low in oxygen, is collected in veins and travels to the
right atrium and into the right ventricle.

EVALUATION:
Complete the passage below by putting the missing word. Write your answer in the
space provided.
The center of the circulatory system is the (1)________, which is the main pumping mechanism.
There are also valves at the bottom of the large arteries that carry blood away from the heart:
the (2)_______ and the pulmonary artery. These valves keep the blood from flowing backward
into the heart once it has been pumped out. So there are actually four chambers (spaces) inside
the heart. Each top chamber is called an (3)_________ (plural: atria). The bottom chambers are
called (4)_________. The smallest blood vessels, called (5)__________, form a fine network of
tiny vessels throughout the body.

REFLECTION:
Write a short essay about how amazing the circulatory system is.
