Student Health Research Task

1) The document prompts students to analyze which disease - diabetes or HIV/AIDS - should be the focus of funding and research over the next decade based on information from provided case studies, textbooks, and at least three reliable outside sources. 2) The student claims HIV/AIDS should be the focus because it has killed over 35 million people worldwide, there are currently over 36 million people living with HIV/AIDS, and about 1 million people die from it each year. 3) The student provides evidence from three sources that HIV/AIDS has killed millions worldwide and over a million in 2016, millions currently live with the disease needing lifelong treatment, and millions of new cases occur each year, showing it as a ongoing global

Unit 2 World Health Performance Task Checkpoint 2

So far in this Unit you have read case studies about Diabetes and HIV/AIDS. From the information provided in
your textbook case studies and activities, AS WELL AS at least three reliable outside sources, answer the
following question using the C-E-R (Claim Evidence Reasoning) format. You will upload your finished work to
the turnitin.com assignment to check your similarity score as well as to the Canvas assignment.

Which disease should be the focus of funding and research over the next decade? (Diabetes or
HIV/AIDS)

Claim:
- Should identify the disease you choose and list the evidence you will use to support your statements.

HIV/AIDS should be the focus of funding and research over the next decade because it affects and kills so
many people worldwide, there is no cure for the disease, and it greatly impacts developing countries.

Evidence:
- At least three supporting pieces of evidence.
- Cite your sources using APA format within the text.

1. Overall, HIV/AIDS has killed over 35 million people worldwide, with over 1 million dying in 2016
worldwide alone, and about 36.7 million people living with HIV worldwide. Of all of these infected
people, 54% of adults and 43% of children will be on antiretroviral therapy for their whole life (World
Health Organization, 2017). Antiretroviral therapy is when patients are given a combination of drugs
that allow the patient to start fighting off the HIV infection in order to help prolong their life (SEPUP,
2011). Furthermore, of the 1.1 million people infected in the United States alone, about 15% of these
people do not know that they are infected. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). This
means that these people can continue to spread the disease to others, further increasing the amount
of infected people. In the United States, the demographic that is accountable for the majority of HIV
infections is gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men as they hold 67% of all
diagnoses (HIV.gov, 2017). Finally, there was about 1.8 million new cases of HIV in the world in
2016, and this trend is continuing (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
Reasoning:
-Connect your evidence to your understanding of the cellular mechanisms of the disease.
-Cite your sources using APA format within the text.

1. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system of the host until they are defenseless, and once the
immune system is weakened enough, the person is classified as having AIDS. Because their immune
system is weakened so much, most patients develop at least one serious disease such as
pneumonia, tuberculosis, or hepatitis C (SEPUP, 2011).
