Four Experiments and Atom Structure: Thomson's Cathode Ray Experiment

The document discusses four experiments that helped reveal the structure of atoms: Newton's second law of motion, Thomson's cathode ray experiment, Millikan's oil drop experiment, Rutherford's gold foil experiment, and the Thomson-Aston neon experiment. These experiments established relationships between forces and particles, discovered properties of electrons, and led to the planetary model of the atom.

Four Experiments and Atom Structure

- Newton’s 2nd Law: F = ma (sum of forces equals mass times acceleration)

- Gravity: Fgrav = mg
- Electrostatic: Felectrostatic = qE (E = electric field, points from positive to
negative)
- Magnetic: Fmagnetic = qv x B (B = magnetic field, points from north to south)
- X is cross product, Fmag is perpendicular to v x B

Thomson’s Cathode Ray Experiment

- Big Idea: found ratio between charge of electron and mass of electron

Millikan Oil-Drop Experiment

- Big Idea: found charge of electron, and mass of electron

Rutherford Gold Foil Experiment

- Big Idea: No plum pudding, created planetary model

Thomson-Aston Neon Experiment

- Big Idea: Heavier atoms are deflected less than lighter atoms. Mass and
deflection indirectly proportional. Found neutrons and must be discrete because
ratio of whole numbers
