Critical Temperatures Frost Damage Fruit Trees Utah

This document provides critical temperature thresholds in Fahrenheit for 10% and 90% bud kill of various fruit trees after 30 minutes of exposure. The table lists temperature thresholds for different developmental stages of apples, pears, apricots, cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums. Exposure to temperatures below the 10% threshold or above the 90% threshold can cause significant crop loss. The percentage of bud survival needed varies by crop but is generally over 50% for cherries and 10-15% for apples, pears, and peaches.

Critical Temperatures for Frost Damage on Fruit Trees

Marion Murray, IPM Project Leader

The following table, developed by Washington State University, lists Fahrenheit reduction will vary with each crop. For example, to have a full crop of cherries
temperatures for each stage of development at which 10% and 90% bud kill requires well over 50% bud survival in most years, while apples, pears, and
occurs after 30 minutes exposure. The percentage bud kill which causes crop peaches may only need 10-15% bud survival.
