“Ada Calhoun writes with absolute clarity about the giddiest and most destabilizing feeling—the crush. This novel made me feel dizzy and I loved every second. Calhoun can seduce me any day of the week.”
—Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author of This Time Tomorrow
When a husband asks his wife to consider what might be missing from their marriage, what follows surprises them both—sex, heartbreak and heart rekindling, and a rediscovered sense of all that is possible
She’s happy and settled and productive and content in her full life—a child, a career, an admirable marriage, deep friendships, happy parents, and a spouse she still loves. But when her husband urges her to address what the narrow labels of “husband” and “wife” force them to edit out of their lives, the very best kind of hell breaks loose.
Using the author’s personal experiences as a jumping-off point, Crush is about the danger and liberation of chasing desire, the havoc it can wreak, and most of all the clear sense of self one finds when the storm passes. Destined to become a classic novel of marriage, and tackling the big questions being asked about partnership in postpandemic relationships, Crush is a sharp, funny, seductive, and revelatory novel about holding on to everything it’s possible to love—friends, children, parents, passion, lovers, husbands, all of the world’s good books, and most of all one’s own deep sense of purpose.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5May 1, 2025 A fine marital drama. Heavy on character and light on plot, the husband remains a cypher whose motives remain contradictory. The wife stays an accommodating people pleasure, and while I have some sympathy for her, I can say she interests me much.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Apr 21, 2025 If you have ever indulged in a passionate love affair and emerged without bitterness, you'll enjoy this blow-by-blow of a crush that began with one meeting, evolved into many emails, and culminated in the sundering of one marriage. The unnamed ghostwriter by trade has been fairly content with husband and son, but she misses passionate kisses, which her husband does not enjoy, and her son is in high school, with little need of her time or advice. An open marriage is proposed, but husband Paul, who is turned on by his wife's flirting with other men, can't handle the reduction in attention. It's a bit too chock full of her tears and emoting, but she and her lover share an enjoyment of literature that enhances what might have been a predictable read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mar 5, 2025 I wonder how this book would have hit me if I were not the exact target audience. As it is, there were moments every few pages - every page, in some stretches - that had me making notes, nodding my head, saying "Yes, that, exactly." I enjoyed the pop and high culture references, and deeply resonated with the way the protagonist (the author?) and her beloved use texts to explore and comprehend their relationship. This book is expansive, guided by and full of love.
