About this audiobook

Communications specialist Alto’s shift aboard the starship M.G. Yellowjacket turns hellish after waking from a tryst to learn every crewmate has vanished. Worse, a sinister presence has crawled aboard the ship. It’s violent, destructive, and it can reach into your thoughts to make you see and feel what it wants.

Anxiety-ridden Alto might be the least-qualified person to face a creature that can hack minds like computers. Only a perilous journey to the ship’s bridge can reunite comms specialist with crew and give them a chance to call for help.

But the intruder only scratches the surface of this crisis, and discovering the truth will bring Alto face to face against a nightmare beyond flesh and thought.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a cool sci-fi horror with deep themes, mystery, and horror. It has interesting descriptions and POV, particularly focused on queer body horror. The relationship between Alto and their wraith is touching. However, there are some issues with info dumping, heavy reuse of phrases, and lack of variation. Some readers found the deeper themes to be confusing. Overall, it is recommended for those who enjoy body horror and psychological elements.

Not the book you expect it to be. This takes itself too seriously and tries to make too many profound statements.

From the outset I was intrigued and expected a straight-forward Sci Fi ride (threat closes in, characters need to escape, etc.), but there are much deeper themes here. Admittedly some of them probably went over my head, especially toward the end.

This one was a bit trippy! At times grotesque and claustrophobic, this book really reminded me of a David Cronenberg movie or the recent release "Color Out of Space". Great prose and descriptions of the body horror taking place, but I got lost a few times and had trouble understanding sometimes where things were going due to the amount of description about the brain beasts, body augments, and things like that.

I wasn’t surprised when I checked the copy write date and found this to be written in 2021. Sci-fi writing has gotten worse over the years and this book is a great example of how low the standards have gotten for the genre. The story was lacking and the characters were as basic as “they” come. Poor quality would not recommend.

Very cool concept, but very abstract. I loved the sci-fi horror but so much of this went over my head in audio format.

It's queer, it has interesting descriptions and pov. I wasn't in love with the counsellor x pov character part, it felt uncomfortable throughout, literally any other profession - I understand the choice, being this is about a mind, but it felt icky.

Great descriptions throughout, I love a good queer focused body horror. I loved the relationship between Alto and their wraith, I misted up a bit toward the end.

However, some description was info dumping and shovelling exposition at the start. Additionally, some turns of phrase lost potency on HEAVY reuse. Could use more variation considering it's a short read.

Overall would recc if you enjoy body horror, psychologic

Cool scifi-horror story that effectively uses its monsters and advanced technology to discuss body autonomy. Plus it's just an entertaining piece of fiction.
