About this audiobook
"Choo narrates this richly complex novel herself, her gorgeous writing delivered in a voice that is deep and precise and lovely, both British and not quite. Her tone and words transport us..." — San Francisco Chronicle

A sweeping historical audiobook about a dancehall girl and an orphan boy whose fates entangle over an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers.
Quick-witted, ambitious Ji Lin is stuck as an apprentice dressmaker, moonlighting as a dancehall girl to help pay off her mother’s Mahjong debts. But when one of her dance partners accidentally leaves behind a gruesome souvenir, Ji Lin may finally get the adventure she has been longing for.
Eleven-year-old houseboy Ren is also on a mission, racing to fulfill his former master’s dying wish: that Ren find the man’s finger, lost years ago in an accident, and bury it with his body. Ren has 49 days to do so, or his master’s soul will wander the earth forever.
As the days tick relentlessly by, a series of unexplained deaths wracks the district, along with whispers of men who turn into tigers. Ji Lin and Ren’s increasingly dangerous paths crisscross through lush plantations, hospital storage rooms, and ghostly dreamscapes.
Yangsze Choo's The Night Tiger pulls us into a world of servants and masters, age-old superstition and modern idealism, sibling rivalry and forbidden love. But anchoring this dazzling, propulsive audiobook is the intimate coming of age of a child and a young woman, each searching for their place in a society that would rather they stay invisible.

Editor's Note
A Reese Witherspoon pick…
Reese Witherspoon selected this novel as her April 2019 Hello Sunshine book club pick. On her website, Witherspoon says, “Set in a tiny Malaysian town in the 1930s, the story is about a mystifying tiger who haunts the villages, followed by a series of mysterious deaths. The two main characters will captivate you as their paths are destined to cross.”

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 26, 2023 I ready the book and listen to aidiobooks at the same time. When i was driving or just not in the mood.
I love the book. It got everything you need in a book.
What are you looking for? Characters? Adventures? Mysterious? Suspense? Romance? Horror? All got in one place.
It's all started with a finger. A weretiger finger. The story is about the superstition in Malaya during British colonial. Actually if you are a Malaysian you can very well relate to the story. The legend of weretiger, your soul is wandering when you're sleeping, i guess most of malaysian heard of it. It's nice tho.
The story goes on with Ji Lin and Shin tried to return the fingers and Ren tried to find the finger to make his master whole again. As the story goes, their fates intervines, with the rest of the characters, Yi and Li. I love how all the characters developed.
The book also touch a lot of asian traditions, how things were back then, where you are lucky if you were born a male. You can do anything you want and be whoever you wanna be. While women stuck of being a wife or dressmaker, anything that makes you a female.
As the plot goes, i got very curious and a lot of guessing who's the bad guy, who caused all unfortunate events and i just can't put the book down. I even dreamt about it. I really want to finish the book. I'm glad i did. Hats off to the writer. I will definitely buy her book again.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Sep 26, 2023 Ay... I had to force myself to finish this book. I know so many people like it but the plot felt... pointless. I was sooo bored... I kept on reading it because I only found the cultural aspects of the story interesting. I would say that I only enjoyed the last 20% of the book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 26, 2023 Pretty good read overall, some ends were not wrapped up and u prefer then to be.
