The Princess Diaries
meets Crazy Rich Asians in Emiko Jean’s Tokyo Ever After, a “refreshing, spot-on” (Booklist, starred review) story of an ordinary Japanese-American girl who discovers that her father is the Crown Prince of Japan.

Izumi Tanaka has never really felt like she fit in—it isn’t easy being Japanese American in her small, mostly white, northern California town. Raised by a single mother, it’s always been Izumi—or Izzy, because “It’s easier this way”—and her mom against the world. But then Izumi discovers a clue to her previously unknown father’s identity…and he’s none other than the Crown Prince of Japan. Which means outspoken, irreverent Izzy is literally a princess.

In a whirlwind, Izumi travels to Japan to meet the father she never knew and discover the country she always dreamed of. But being a princess isn’t all ball gowns and tiaras. There are conniving cousins, a hungry press, a scowling but handsome bodyguard who just might be her soulmate, and thousands of years of tradition and customs to learn practically overnight.

Izumi soon finds herself caught between worlds, and between versions of herself—back home, she was never “American” enough, and in Japan, she must prove she’s “Japanese” enough. Will Izumi crumble under the weight of the crown, or will she live out her fairy tale, happily ever after?

Look for the sequel to Tokyo Ever After in 2022!

Editor's Note

Royally fun…

Billed as “The Princess Diaries” meets “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Tokyo Ever After” follows plain old Japanese American teen Izumi Tanaka as she deals with the discovery that her father is the Crown Prince of Japan. Caught between so many identities proves difficult to navigate, even with the help of a hot bodyguard. A royally fun cross-cultural adventure.

The easiest 5 star I've given this year so far. This was the most wholesome, cute and precious thing I've ever read. Period.
I cant express into words how grateful I am for Emiko jean to write such a highly crafted story that encapsulates every single good thing that Japan and shoujo manga has to offer. ♥️

I loved this book. It was my most anticipated read for June and I was not disappointed. I got such Princess Diaries vibes while reading. Izumi was a fabulous character. I loved her and the AGG!! Her relationship with her mama was wonderful. I cannot wait to read more from this author. Thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for sharing this review copy with me in exchange for an honest review.

Very trope heavy, but it's so well written and cute that it made me want to leave feedback so others will read it. This won't be a book for everyone, but it's good for when you're in a light happy book mood. If we could give half stars I'd make this a 4.5.

Really enjoyed this book. I hope there will be a sequel to it. Just wish there were actual consequences for one of the characters and did not see the importance of the dog. Really the only reasons it is not 5 stars. I enjoyed learning more about Japanese culture.

I really liked this book! Ali Ahn did a really good job performing this story! I thoroughly enjoyed her narration.

I liked Izumi and was happy about her getting back together with Akio in the end.

I also liked her father, although I wished he had given her more guidance and support to avoid the blunders she made.

I understood why her mother didn't tell her about her father, but surely there was a way to tell her something about him?

I'm not the "target audience" for YA so for me "The Princess Diaries" vibe made the story feel a bit predictable and redone. I did enjoy the story though and really enjoyed learning more about Japanese culture and Japanese American experience. That really set the story apart and elevated it. Recommend for teens and young adults. A fun audio
