About this audiobook
#1 New York Times Bestseller and #1 International Bestseller • Now a Peacock Original Series starring Harvey Keitel and Melanie Lynskey
This beautiful, illuminating tale of hope and courage is based on interviews that were conducted with Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz-Birkenau tattooist Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov—an unforgettable love story in the midst of atrocity.
“The Tattooist of Auschwitz is an extraordinary document, a story about the extremes of human behavior existing side by side: calculated brutality alongside impulsive and selfless acts of love. I find it hard to imagine anyone who would not be drawn in, confronted and moved. I would recommend it unreservedly to anyone, whether they’d read a hundred Holocaust stories or none.”—Graeme Simsion, internationally-bestselling author of The Rosie Project
In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners.
Imprisoned for over two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism—but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his privileged position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.
One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner 32407, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed onto her arm. Her name is Gita, and in that first encounter, Lale vows to somehow survive the camp and marry her.
A vivid, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful re-creation of Lale Sokolov's experiences as the man who tattooed the arms of thousands of prisoners with what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is also a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest possible conditions.
Editor's Note
Audie Award winner…

AudioFile praises the “superb narrator” for capturing “every emotion from fear to trepidation to hope and even to love with understated warmth.”

This was a novelized form of the true tale of Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew who is transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. While there it is discovered that he speaks 5 languages so he is made to the be the camp's tattooist. While there is meets a trembling young woman waiting to be tattooed, Gita, prisoner 34902. Using his "privileged" position Lale steals jewels and trades them for food morsels which he doles out to others. This is a story of hope and humanity even in the darkest hour. One of the best Holocaust books I have read. 288 pages1 person found this helpful

My heart is fuller for having read/listened to this painful yet heart-warming story. God knows. Knowing that He sees the inhumanity of the people who somehow let their hearts grow evil/cold and hard enough to inflict such horror on another human being (man, woman and child) and that these people will face His Judgement enables me to read the stories of WWII. I have to take it in bite-sized readings as I am overwhelmed at the evil. But most of all there are no words for the depth of awe I feel for those who survived to tell of their hardships and survival! This book is a must read for anyone courageous enough to believe and to hear this story! There are always those who somehow survive to tell history at its worst and at its best.
May God please help it to be “Never Again!”
Note: I am a Christian. Anyone who calls themselves a “Christian” and can commit such evil has never read or understood the words of Jesus!
Both Old and New Testaments call us to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

This book was breathtaking. I have ready many historical fictions about the camps. This book, while giving a harrowing account, has such a golden thread of hope running through it. This book was absolutely amazing. When I would try to tell myself this is NOT fiction, this is TRUTH, I could hardly wrap my mind around the the terribleness. That being said, the book was not depressing. It was fascinating. Well done!!! I wish she had more books in this genre and era. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

When I was younger, I read an assortment of books about Nazi Germany and the atrocities that were the camps. Listening to this story broke my heart in so many places. People who lived through this horrific time learned lessons which I feel are lost to the rest of us. As Gary said, "they'd just lost everything and Mom was singing". - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

A warm and touching true story. Made me understand more about that time in the camps. Never do judge others. Because we don't know their deepest reasons or fears.
