""Demon is a voice for the ages—akin to Huck Finn or Holden Caulfield—only even more resilient.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick
""May be the best novel of [the year]. . . . Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love.” —Ron Charles, Washington Post
From the acclaimed author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean Trees and the recipient of the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, a brilliant novel that enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.
Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 9, 2023 Humorous and heart breaking. The author one of the best story tellers and the voice actor was exceptional!1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 9, 2023 The level of knowledge displayed in the narrative concerning the opiate crisis in rural America is spot on!!1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 9, 2023 Quite a journey. If you want a book to make you feel all the things by the end then this is one. Grief, anger, humor, angst, pity, victory, and defeat. One star off for the length and excessive use of curse words which in my opinion do not ad anything to the story at all. At first it seems as if this whole book is going to be one whole trainwreck of a novel but hang in there some redemption does occur by the end. This won't be everyone's cup of tea but for me it has local appeal.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Sep 9, 2023 Loving the book but the stream has some MAJOR gaps in it - apparently entire chapters, in which major events take place. Really ruined the experience and I had to stop midway.
Somebody needs to do some serious quality control here. I wouldn’t bother starting until this gets fixed.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 9, 2023 This is the best description of Appalachia I’ve ever heard. For better or worse, every character is either you or someone you know.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 9, 2023 Wow! I live just a few hours from Lee County, work in the juvenile court system, been to juvenile detention centers and Beaumont (now closed). This writer is spot on with the battles fought by our older kids in “the system”. A real look from the kid’s perspective.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Aug 17, 2025 Since reading Animal Dreams in my 20’s, she never disappoints. I absolutely loved the book and fell in love with so many of the characters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Aug 5, 2025 This was the first book that I have ever listened to by this author. I was absolutely blown away by the authentic voice and persona that she created for the main character. The narration was top notch as well. The entire thing was absolutely inspired. Loved it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 10, 2025 The way this shows the story of a poor kid surviving addiction thru generations is well written. The way his family chosen and otherwise lean in to help him acieve success and love after a life of struggle and loss will break and swell your heart.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jun 25, 2025 The narrative was excellent. The characters were so well written.I loved the journey!!

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5May 14, 2025 Depressing uncalled for lowest level living standards and people, yikes!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Apr 27, 2025 The story telling is good, but my god is this a long slog through a very depressing book. I had to put it down for my own sanity.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mar 26, 2025 Good book with this narrator is absolutely perfect so it makes it a great book. I feel like Demon is telling me his story and I couldn’t stop listening.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jan 7, 2025 I loved this book so much. The characters are fully developed and each one them comes alive in your imagination. The narration done by Charlie Thurston had me within the first few lines. I was in no hurry for this book to end but at the same time I could not stop listening every chance I got.
I gave it five stars because it was one of the best books I have ever heard. I will buy this book to relish it again.
I laughed out loud , I ached deep inside for Damon, with many a tear wiped away from my cheek. I could go on and on.
I can understand why the book was given the dubious honor of winning a Pulitzer Prize. I look forward to reading and listening to more Barbara Kingsolver books. I will also look for books narrated by Charlie Thurston.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dec 29, 2024 I loved this story as it reminded me of the small town I lived in when I was a child.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dec 4, 2024 Absolutely brilliant. As someone who lives in rural NC, these characters felt like my friends, classmates, coworkers, and family. This is not only a moving story but also a deep social commentary. Truly captivating and worth every second.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nov 26, 2024 What a beautiful love letter to the strife of vulnerable Appalachian people! The narration is simply the best. So moving and memorable.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Oct 20, 2024 Not accurate to say that I "liked" this, but it's an important read on how intimately a piece of OUR homeland that has been impacted. The portrayal isn't meant to be pretty, for accuracy's sake. The plotline is hopelessly flawed and assaninely unlikely to stay true to the real odds of "making it out," if that is even possible.
My brain was very busy throughout the story, and I was led to question several popular contemporary beliefs I had held about generational junkies and the culture surrounding them.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Oct 3, 2024 Although this book is a work of fiction, I appreciate the glimpse into life in Applachia - about which I know next to nothing.
It also personalized/humanized the struggle of opioid addiction, which although I realize is heart-breaking I have no personal experience.
The narration really made the book for me - I could hear (what I think of as) Appalachia as read by the narrator.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 23, 2024 What a great story! I think one of my all-time favorites! The illustration of the devastation of pharmaceuticals on small town life is remarkable. The narrator is SUPERB!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Aug 29, 2024 One of the best books I've read in my lifetime. As another commenter said, the characters stay with you. More than a year after reading it, I often have the characters in my thoughts. It's hard to read in part, not because of the writing but because of the tragedies and harm that the young protagonist has to endure on his life path. SO worth reading!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Aug 28, 2024 Truly incredible boom and the narrator was amazing. Highly recommend
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Aug 23, 2024 An excellent book! A must read or listen. I highly recommend it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Aug 16, 2024 As a person in recovery for 10 years, I found this book to be very true. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 28, 2024 Truly feels like you are in this young man’s mind. Pulls the heart strings for the “throw away” kids. Language is rough as one would expect from a person in this situation.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 13, 2024 Brilliant, Barbara Kingsolver book! While listening to the excellent narrator and story, I would think that this author is amazing… And then I would remember that it was Kingsolver! Her other favorite of mine is The Poisonwood Bible. If you haven’t read it, you must!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 12, 2024 A great read. Can't believe how close it came to the original dickens despite the change in space and time. Wonderfully read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jun 10, 2024 This book had me hooked from the first sentence! Wow! Brillant!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jun 3, 2024 Just a masterpiece. There’s a reason this book has a Pulitzer. So enjoyable, and the narrator is so talented and perfect for this book.
