MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Consumer Price Index

In July, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2 percent, seasonally adjusted, and rose 2.9 percent over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.2 percent in July (SA); up 3.2 percent over the year (NSA).

Employment Cost Index

Compensation costs increased 0.9 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from March 2024 to June 2024. Over the year, total compensation rose 4.1 percent, wages and salaries rose 4.2 percent, and benefit costs rose 3.8 percent.

Employment Situation

The unemployment rate rose to 4.3 percent in July, and nonfarm payroll employment edged up by 114,000. Employment continued to trend up in health care, in construction, and in transportation and warehousing, while information lost jobs.

Producer Price Index

The Producer Price Index for final demand increased 0.1 percent in July. Prices for final demand goods moved up 0.6 percent, and the index for final demand services fell 0.2 percent. Prices for final demand advanced 2.2 percent for the 12 months ended in July.

Productivity and Costs

Productivity increased 2.3 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the second quarter of 2024; unit labor costs increased 0.9 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 1.8 percent and unit labor costs increased 3.2 percent.

Real Earnings

Real average hourly earnings for all employees increased 0.1 percent in July, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings increased 0.2 percent, and CPI-U increased 0.2 percent. Real average weekly earnings decreased 0.2 percent.

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

Prices for U.S. imports advanced 0.1 percent in July, after being unchanged in June. U.S. export prices increased 0.7 percent in July following a 0.3-percent decline the previous month. Over the past year, import prices rose 1.6 percent and export prices advanced 1.4 percent.
