The study of intellectuals constitutes a vibrant intersection of political sociology, sociology of knowledge, sociology of intellectual life, and sociological theory. Influential scholars such as Karl Mannheim, Zygmunt Bauman, Pierre Bourdieu, and Michel Foucault have enriched the social-historical understanding of intellectuals in modern societies; and more recently, the New Sociology of Ideas (NSI) has extended this endeavour with studies of social scientists and humanities scholars in Western countries. This thesis, however, documenting the intellectual trajectory of Shen Yuan (沈原, b. 1954) since the 1960s, is the first empirical study of a Chinese social scientist as a public intellectual produce within the sub-field of the NSI. It explains how Shen negotiated an authoritarian regime to become a public intellectual. In order to
explore such a process, this study demonstrates the importance of attending to the way Shen sees and defines himself as an intellectual. Following Gross’s theory of Intellectual Self-Concept, the research shows that the key to understanding the making of Shen as a public intellectual is to study the Chinese sociologist’s changing intellectual identity, from problematic Marxist during
the 1980s and 1990s to public sociology after 2000. To trace Shen’s intellectual trajectory, this research utilized original interviews with Shen Yuan and several of his students in Beijing, and primary sources including Shen’s publications. While employing various interpretative tools, including Gross’s intellectual self-concept, Bourdieu’s field and habitus, and Watson’s dual concepts of orthopraxy and orthodoxy, the research makes two conceptual contributions to the
sociology of intellectual life: both archived identity and conceptual literacy hone an analytical understanding of the development and work of public intellectuals.

Este trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar um panorama sobre a evolução do campo das Relações Internacionais na China e os debates recentes em torno do desenvolvimento de uma escola teórica autônoma que incorpore elementos da cultura chinesa. Neste debate, duas principais correntes têm se posicionado em lados opostos: a “Chinese School” e a “Tsinghua School”. O presente artigo descreve as diferenças entre essas escolas e discute as contribuições de cada uma para a elaboração de uma teoria chinesa das Relações Internacionais.

Mathematical logic was first introduced to China in early 1920s. Although, the process of introduction was facilitated by the lectures of Bertrand Russel at Peking University in 1921 and continued by China’s most passionate adherents of Russell’s philosophy, the establishment of mathematical logic as an academic discipline occurred only in late 1920s, in the framework of a recently reorganised Qinghua University in Peking. The main aim of this paper is to shed some light on the process of establishment of mathematical logic at the department of philosophy at Qinghua University, between the years 1926 and 1945. In its main line of discussion, the article highlights the curricular developments at the department, connecting them with concrete theoretical endeavours by the leading members of the department. Furthermore, in its later parts, the article summarises the main advances made in the context of studies of modern logic at Qinghua University, from the expositions on the quintessential work Principia Mathematica, to the subsequent integration of criticisms coming from circles of logicians at Harvard University and ground-breaking contributions of Kurt Gödel in the mid-1930s.

This report documents a workshop that was held at the Tsinghua-BP Clean Energy Centre at Tsinghua University on 21-23 October 2013. The focus of the workshop was the challenge of integrating intermittent power generation into China’s electricity network. The workshop made use of technology roadmapping techniques in order to bring together a diverse set of perspectives.
This report contains descriptions of the processes underpinning these workshop elements along with their outputs. The most significant of these outputs is a set of recommendations for the actions necessary to achieve the “desired vision”.

This paper presents a risk assessment method based on threat propagation between assets for assessing the risks related to complex information system security.This method describes the threat propagation route between assets as a threat propagation tree, with the risk to the complex information system security assessed by the expected value loss of each node in the threat propagation tree with the probability of each step in the threat propagation tree.The accuracy of this model is evaluated by applying the model to a representative complex information system.The analysis shows that this method represents the different probabilities for different threatened nodes and the threat propagation between nodes to identiby the key protected nodes during different periods.The system is more objective and accurate than the traditional isolated node analysis method and is able to guide security risk managers to formulate reasonable security protection strategies for complex information systems.

An integrated building simulation environment, IISABRE, is introduced. IISABRE consists of CABD, BTP and IISPAM. CABD is an AutoCAD-based building descriptor enabling users to draw a building and define information. Some design tools are built into CABD, and a STEP-based building database can be generated, which provides an open mechanism to share the building database with other programs. BTP is a program for the detailed dynamic simulation of building thermal performance. With a PC 486DX50 (8M RAM) running in MS-Windows 3.11, BTP needs about 40 minutes to calculate the annual hourly energy demand for a building with 20 zones. IISPAM is a knowledge-based system for translating the STEP-based building database into ASCII-based data files for BTP. IISABRE can be widely employed in the field of building environmental engineering in order to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and the thermal comfort of the indoor environment.
