The poetry of Ritsos

This paper offers a close reading of ‘Orestes’, the earliest (1962–1966) of the monologues eventually included (after being published as separate volumes) in Yiannis Ritsos’ Fourth Dimension. Its principal aim is to explore Ritsos’ extensive reworking of the myth of the Atreids, especially as retold by the three great tragedians, in the light of existentialist philosophy and drama.

A partire dalla ricerca biografica su Ghiannis Ritsos e dall'analisi dei testi di "Quarta dimensione", la tesi vuole indagare i temi cari al poeta, quali la memoria, il tempo, il rapporto con il quotidiano e i gli oggetti che lo abitano, in un'ottica in cui il corpo vivificante dei 18 poemetti è quello dell'attore teatrale che continuamente li rinnova, portandoli in scena, dal mito al contemporaneo.

Paper 3 – Title: «The reception of Homer by Yannis Ritsos in the poem “Penelope’s Despair” (Repetitions B΄, 1968)».

Πρόκειται για ένα ψηφιακό Ανθολόγιο των χρόνων της εξορίας του Γιάννη Ρίτσου. Καταγράφεται κυρίως η εμπειρία του στα νησιά Λήμνο, Άη Στράτη, Μακρόνησο μέσα από ποιήματα, επιστολές κ.α. κείμενα. Ιδιαίτερη βαρύτητα δίνεται στην παραμονή του στη Σάμο, υπό το καθεστώς του "κατ' οίκον περιορισμού". Το Ανθολόγιο απευθύνεται στους μαθητές της Ευαγγελικής Σχολής Σμύρνης, οι οποίοι, σε διασχολική συνεργασία με τους μαθητές του Γυμνασίου Καρλοβασίων Σάμου, ασχολήθηκαν με το βίο και το έργο του εξόριστου ποιητή.

The modern Greek poet Yannis Ritsos travelled to Italy at least seven times in his life. During his trips he wrote notes of his impressions, similar to keeping a diary, as well as composing relevant verses on the spot. Three collections of Ritsos‟ poems (“Transfusion”, “The world is one” and “The statue in the rain”), forming the so-called Italian Triptych, were inspired his voyages to Italy. Ritsos differs from other poets who composed travel poems. Although he admired the Italian monuments, he preferred to illustrate the everyday life, the people and the natural or urban landscape of the cities he visited. He praised men‟s and women‟s beauty; he admired the nudity of the statues, which is sometimes seen as a sexual metaphor; he envisioned present, past or even ancient lovers‟ intercourses; he described prostitutes, homosexuals or transvestites in the urban streets. Ritsos‟ Italian-themed poems are the literary depiction of the „Bel paese‟, oscillating between ancient and modern times, between beauty and sensuality.

Η περίπτωση του ποιητή Γιάννη Ρίτσου θέτει με πολλούς τρόπους το ζήτημα της κριτικής και της αξιολόγησης ενός λογοτεχνικού έργου. Τόσο η ιδεολογική του στράτευση όσο και η πολυμορφία της έκφρασής του Ρίτσου δημιουργούν, από την έκδοση της πρώτης του συλλογής, αντιστάσεις, αμφιθυμίες, αλλά και ενθουσιαστικές αποτιμήσεις οι οποίες δεν απορρέουν πάντοτε από μια απροκατάληπτη αισθητική κρίση, αλλά επηρεάζονται από το βαθμό της ιδεολογικής του στράτευσης. Παρακολουθώντας τις διακυμάνσεις της στάσης των κριτικών απέναντι στην ποίηση του Γιάννη Ρίτσου, η ανακοίνωση εντοπίζει τους βασικούς σταθμούς μιας ιδεολογικής περιπέτειας που ξεκινά από τη δεκαετία του ’30 και φτάνει ως τη δεκαετία του ’60. Ή μελέτη επικεντρώνεται παραδειγματικά στους βασικούς σταθμούς της κριτικής υποδοχής του έργου του, εστιάζοντας κυρίως στα κριτικά κείμενα αλλά και στη συζήτηση που αναπτύχθηκε. Κρίσιμη για τη δεκαετία του ’30 η αναγόρευση του Ρίτσου ουσιαστικά σε διάδοχο του Παλαμά. Ωστόσο τόσο η κριτική του Αντρέα Καραντώνη, η οποία σε μεγάλο βαθμό εκφράζει και την ομάδα του περιοδικού Τα Νέα Γράμματα, όσο και της αριστεράς στο μεσοπόλεμο, δείχνουν με τις επιφυλάξεις που διατηρούν τους κοινούς τόπους στους οποίους οδηγούνται -ξεκινώντας από διαφορετική αφετηρία- οι δύο πόλοι. Η κριτική των συντρόφων και των αντιπάλων στα πρώτα μεταπολεμικά χρόνια, δείχνει να κινείται στις ίδιες γραμμές, ενώ προχωρώντας στο τέλος της δεκαετίας του 50 και στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’60, αρχίζει να δημιουργείται ένα κλίμα κοινής αποδοχής που δημιουργούν τα ποιήματα που γράφονται στα μέτρα της Τέταρτης διάστασης.

This paper examines Yannis Ritsos’s rewriting of Sophocles’s Antigone in his dramatic monologue 'Ismene' (1972). Engaging postmodern feminist thought enables us to explore the way in which Ritsos exposes the circumstances of the production of femininity within the political rationalities of both the Greek military junta and Soviet totalitarianism. I focus more particularly on the theoretical perspective of Luce Irigaray and Judith Butler. Despite their different (or even rival) programmes, these thinkers emphasize the significance of mimesis and the theatre model respectively, in order to signal new ways to rethink (female) subjectivity. Borrowing on Sophocles’s conflictual universe in enacting two radically contradictory variations of “womanliness” (Ismene and Antigone), Ritsos puts forward the theatrical construction of (sexual) identity and raises significant issues which relate to the functioning of power. (In) between the world of appearances and the “real” one, this modern use of the theatre metaphor blurs the limits between truth and falsity of both gender categories and theatre itself. By presenting life as a form of performance and vice-versa, this paper argues, Ritsos dramatizes the committed writer’s inner crisis toward the quest of alternative configurations of identity – be it sexual, social, national, ideological, or aesthetic.

Στο πρώτο μέρος της εισήγησης εξετάζεται ο τρόπος με τον οποίο το νησί χρησιμοποιείται ως συμβολικός τόπος εξορίας στο ποίημα «Τι νέοι που φτάσαμε ως εδώ» του Κώστα Καρυωτάκη, σε συνδυασμό με το ποίημα «Ταξίδι στα Κύθηρα» του Μπωντλαίρ. Στη συνέχεια δίνονται παραδείγματα από την ποίηση που αντανακλά το βίωμα της εξορίας στη μετεμφυλιακή Ελλάδα και ειδικότερα στα ποιήματα των Γιάννη Ρίτσου, Τάσου Λειβαδίτη, Άρη Αλεξάνδρου και Τίτου Πατρίκιου. Η ποίηση ως μαρτυρία οδυνηρών βιωμάτων στην ενότητα αυτή βρίσκεται στους αντίποδες της αιγαιοπελαγίτικης ευδίας που χαρακτηρίζει την ποίηση του Ελύτη, αλλά και του μεσοπολεμικού Ρίτσου. Το νησί ως τόπος εξορίας εμφανίζεται εδώ μέσα από την επανάληψη μοτίβων όπως η νύχτα, ο άνεμος, η βροχή και η πέτρα, που δίνουν στον αναγνώστη το κλίμα του εγκλεισμού και της ψυχικής κατάστασης των εξόριστων ποιητών.

Το βιβλίο αποτελείται από 21 μελετήματα. Αρχικά προβάλλεται η αξία της γλώσσας και του νοήματος ως βασικών κλειδιών της θεατρολογικής έρευνας και επιχειρείται η αποτροπή του πλήρους εξοβελισμού της κειμενικής προσέγγισης από την παραστασιολογία.
Στο πρώτο κείμενο-εισαγωγή του βιβλίου «Το ελληνικό θέατρο και τα είδωλα του Νάρκισσου» επιχειρείται μια σύντομη κριτική του σύγχρονου πολιτισμού της οπτικοποίησης των πάντων και μια ουσιαστική υπεράσπιση του ποιοτικού θεάτρου. Στο πρώτο μελέτημα «Προβλήματα ταξινόμησης του ελληνικού μεταπολεμικού δράματος» επιχειρείται μια θεματολογική κωδικοποίηση και ταξινόμηση της ελληνικής δραματουργίας. Προτείνονται 14 θεματικές ενότητες: αρχαιότητα (ιστορία και μυθολογία), βιβλικός και χριστιανικός κόσμος, βυζαντινός πολιτισμός, 1821 και πατριωτικό δράμα, λαϊκός πολιτισμός, αγροτική και επαρχιώτικη ζωή στον 20ό αιώνα, Μικρασιατική καταστροφή και αλύτρωτος ελληνισμός, Κατοχή και Αντίσταση, Εμφύλιος πόλεμος, Επταετία, σύγχρονη αστική ζωή, παγκόσμια ιστορία, παγκόσμια λογοτεχνία και μυθολογία, ελληνική λογοτεχνία. Προτείνονται επίσης 24 θεματικοί άξονες που εξειδικεύουν και συγκεκριμενοποιούν τις θεματικές ενότητες (λ.χ. το θέατρο και οι τέχνες του θεάματος, εγκλωβισμός και καθήλωση, στρατιωτική ζωή, ο κόσμος του ψυχιατρείου, η ζωή ως όνειρο, η ετερότητα, η μητρότητα και ο φεμινιστικός λόγος). Οι κωδικοποιήσεις αυτές συμβάλλουν στην ευχερέστερη θεματολογική προσέγγιση των δραματικών κειμένων.
Το δεύτερο μελέτημα προσφέρει για πρώτη φορά μια περιγραφή και ανάλυση του θεατρικού έργου του ποιητή Γιώργου Θέμελη (παραμένει η μοναδική μελέτη στο θέμα αυτό μέχρι σήμερα). Το τρίτο και το τέταρτο μελέτημα αφιερώνονται στη δραματουργία του Γιώργου Σεβαστίκογλου και είναι τα πρώτα, χρονολογικά, μελετήματα που γράφονται για τα θεατρικά έργα του γνωστού σκηνοθέτη. Το πέμπτο μελέτημα αφιερώνεται στη γραφή του Μποστ, το έκτο στην ανάλυση του Μουγγού του Στρατή Καρρά και το έβδομο στον τελετουργικό χαρακτήρα και το εξπρεσιονιστικό ύφος στη δραματουργία της Μαργαρίτας Λυμπεράκη. Το όγδοο κεφάλαιο επιχειρεί μια θεωρητική προσέγγιση της τεχνικής του montage στον κινηματογράφο και το θέατρο με πεδία εφαρμογής τα έργα του Πέτρου Μάρκαρη, του Γιώργου Μανιώτη και του Παύλου Μάτεσι. Το ένατο και το δέκατο μελέτημα είναι αφιερωμένα στη δραματουργία του Αλέξη Σεβαστάκη και είναι τα πρώτα, χρονολογικά, μελετήματα που γράφονται για τον συγγραφέα αυτόν. Το ενδέκατο και το δωδέκατο μελέτημα αναλύουν τους γλωσσικούς μηχανισμούς και το ζήτημα της εαυτότητας αντιστοίχως στη δραματουργία του Γιάννη Χρυσούλη. Το δέκατο τρίτο και το δέκατο τέταρτο μελέτημα εξετάζουν τις διαδικασίες καθήλωσης και ενοχοποίησης, καθώς και τη διεργασία του βλέμματος στη συγκρότηση της ατομικής συνείδησης στη δραματουργία του Μάριου Ποντίκα. Το δέκατο πέμπτο μελέτημα αναλύει τις πτυχές του τραγικού στο έργο του Παύλου Μάτεσι. Το δέκατο έκτο μελέτημα διερευνά τις συνάψεις των εννοιών της ετερότητας και του κακού, με πεδία εφαρμογής τα θεατρικά έργα του Μάτεσι, του Διαλεγμένου, του Χρυσούλη, του Μανιώτη, του Ποντίκα και του Καμπανέλλη. Το δέκατο έβδομο μελέτημα αναλύει τον ποιητικό μονόλογο Τειρεσίας του Γιάννη Ρίτσου. Το δέκατο όγδοο μελέτημα προσφέρει μια θεατρολογική προσέγγιση (την πρώτη χρονολογικά στην ελληνική θεατρολογία) του έργου Μαρία Νεφέλη του Οδυσσέα Ελύτη με την εξέταση της αντιφωνικής δομής, των εστιών θεατρικότητας του λόγου, των έμμεσων σκηνικών οδηγιών, των λέξεων-κλειδιών κ.ο.κ. Το δέκατο ένατο μελέτημα εξετάζει ορισμένες περιπτώσεις νέκυιας στη μεταπολεμική δραματουργία, το εικοστό αναλύει τα σκηνικά και τα υπαρξιακά τοπία σε κείμενα των Ζιώγα, Καμπανέλλη, Μάτεσι, Κεχαΐδη και Ρίτσο, ενώ το εικοστό μελέτημα αναλύει τους σταθμούς, τις τάσεις και τις προοπτικές της ελληνικής δραματουργίας στην τελευταία εικοσαετία του εικοστού αιώνα.
Το βιβλίο ολοκληρώνεται με βιβλιογραφία 27 σελίδων, ευρετήρια εννοιών, έργων, συγγραφέων και μελετητών.

On at least one of Plato's visits to the sparkling city of Syracuse, he must have visited its famed theater and taken in a tragedy or two.  He may also have reflected, as he sat there on the marble seats and looked up occasionally to glimpse the Ionian Sea, that his own adventure resembled that of a tragic hero.  It had shining ideals, noble goals, great risk, a bit of hubris, and would end in death, nearly for the philosopher himself, and senselessly for his protégé, Dion.  This connection between philosophy and drama goes back farther than Plato, though.  It has roots in the plays of Syracuse's Epicharmus and can be seen in the earliest intellectual history of Magna Graecia, where such thinkers as Pythagoras, Xenophanes, and Empedocles blended philosophy, poetry, and performance.  Sicily and Southern Italy, in particular, seem to have inspired the kind of original ideas that defy disciplinary designation. This collection of essays from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including archaeology, classics, philosophy, and art history, offers a refreshing new outlook on the heritage of Western Greece.

Η εργασία εξετάζει τα ίχνη της ποίησης του Γιάννη Ρίτσου στα ανθολόγια Λογοτεχνίας και στις τρεις βαθμίδες της σχολικής εκπαίδευσης, από το Δημοτικό ώς και το Λύκειο. Η περιγραφή έχει στόχο να δείξει ποια εικόνα της πληθωρικής αλλά και ανήσυχης φύσης αυτού του δημιουργού εμπεδώνεται από νωρίς στη συνείδηση και λογοτεχνική κουλτούρα των μαθητών και να καταδείξει τα όριά της σε σύγκριση με το αληθινό πρόσωπο του ποιητή: αυτό που αναδεικνύει η πολύμορφη τέχνη του και η «στρατευμένη» ποιητική του (βαθύτατα ουμανιστική στον πυρήνα της). Η διαπίστωση των επιλογών και, κυρίως, των κενών, από το έργο του Ρίτσου, στην υφιστάμενη ύλη των εγχειριδίων οδηγεί σε προτάσεις -τόσο στο επίπεδο του υλικού των κειμένων όσο και στο επίπεδο της διδακτικής- που θα μπορούσαν να κάνουν πιο γόνιμο, πιο επικαιροποιημένο τον διάλογο του ποιητή «της Ρωμιοσύνης» με τη νέα γενιά: απαντούν, μ' ένα λόγο, ή φιλοδοξούν να απαντήσουν στο ζητούμενο γιατί μας ενδιαφέρει ο Ρίτσος σήμερα. Η συμβολή της εργασίας αφορά σε μια πλήρη πρόταση αναμόρφωσης των κειμένων του Ρίτσου στα σχολικά ανθολόγια Λογοτεχνίας, και στις τρεις βαθμίδες της σχολικής εκπαίδευσης, κατά τρόπο που να υπηρετούνται δύο αρχές: α) ο χαρακτήρας της τέχνης του να αναδύεται πολύπλευρα, μέσα από κείμενα τα οποία φανερώνουν διαφορετικές όψεις της έμπνευσης και της ποιητικής του ιδιοσυγκρασίας· β) η ανακάλυψη της ποίησης και της ποιητικής του Ρίτσου να γίνεται σταδιακά, από τάξη σε τάξη, ανάλογα με την ηλικία των μαθητών, σε αναβαθμούς κλιμακούμενης δυσκολίας ή καλύτερα εμβάθυνσης στην τέχνη του. Στην πρότασή μου αξιοποιούνται κείμενα από ποικίλες συλλογές, προτείνονται άλλα με κοινή θεματική για παράλληλη ανάγνωση, τέλος, υπογραμμίζονται στοιχεία στα κείμενα που μπορούν να δώσουν λαβή για να συζητηθούν οι διακειμενικές / διαθεματικές σχέσεις του Ρίτσου με άλλους σημαντικούς Έλληνες δημιουργούς που επίσης διδάσκονται στην εκπαίδευση.

Στο μελέτημα αυτό εξετάζεται η ιδιαίτερη, βιογραφική, μυθοπλαστική, αρχετυπική και ψυχαναλυτική, σχέση της ποίησης του Ρίτσου με τη φύση, το ανθρωπογενές περιβάλλον, την ιστορική και πολιτισμική παράδοση της ιδιαίτερης πατρίδας του. Εξετάζονται τα εξελικτικά στάδια της μετάβασης από την, ευτυχισμένη αρχικά αλλά τραυματική στη συνέχεια, παιδική ηλικία που έζησε στη Μονεμβασιά, τη δύσκολη προσαρμογή της απαρφανισμένης και εξόριστης ενήλικης ζωής, ως την επανοικείωση και τη μυθοπλασία του γενέθλιου τόπου στην ιδεολογία και την ποιητική του Ρίτσου.

Undoubtedly the constructive, dialectical relation of the literary works reflects the significant and diachronic people's need to be orientated towards revived cells of the archetypal core, but also to the actualized motives related to their mythic foundation. This universal ascertainment is verified by the fact that famous and gifted creators adopt the unparalleled spirituality and the profound messages that spontaneously spring from selected verses of classic Greek tragedies. In a perfect connection with intellectually enlightened Sophocle Andre Gide, perspicacious Proteus of the French dramaturgy and Yannis Ritsos, the revolotionary figure of the Modern Greek poetry deal with Philoctetes, the legendary archer: Thus the puritanical nuance of bourgeois arrogance and the unrestrained, youthful impulsiveness are bridged at Gide's " Philoctetes " (1898). At the same time the anti-conventional, hedonistic poet's gens are harmonized ideally with the standards of the traditional literature. Analogously at the homonymous poem of the awarded collection " The Fourth Dimension " (1963-1965), at this non-marxist inspiration Yannis Ritsos released from political beliefs approaches the existentialistic balance of the conscious choice between the active, social responsibility and the subjugated art.

La chanson politique a existé dès le Moyen Âge. On a souvent étudié ses manifestations diverses, mais le corpus, très vaste, reste assez rebelle à l’analyse. C’est la raison pour laquelle on a choisi d’aborder ces chansons politiques en Europe, aux XIXe et XXe siècles pour l’essentiel, dans plusieurs pays, afin de mieux cerner, par-delà le foisonnement des variétés, la différence entre chansons directement associées à un événement et chansons devenues politiques sous l’impulsion d’un contexte sociohistorique. Il a fallu prendre en compte aussi l’existence de registres divers — chanson noble (Lied), chanson d’origine populaire (Volkslied), chanson intellectuelle « à la française » (Das Chanson), et chanson à grande diffusion, « tube » pour employer le langage d’aujourd’hui (Schläger) —, dont le choix est souvent déterminé par la langue et la culture considérées. La question s’est, en outre, nécessairement posée de l’efficacité de ces chansons : visent-elles seulement, dans certains cas, à susciter une exaltation sans lendemain ? Sont-elles de nature satirique, relevant par là de l’univers carnavalesque ? Ou bien réellement en prise sur l’événement ? Avec le recul, les meilleures d’entre elles, exprimant« l’air du temps », se sont transformées pour nous en témoignage sur telle ou telle époque, à la « modernité » de laquelle elles contribuent, au sens que Baudelaire donne à ce mot. On peut se demander cependant si, étant donné les conditions actuelles de production et de diffusion, les temps actuels en transmettront beaucoup aux générations futures. Yannis Ritsos is one of the most famous Modern Greek poets of the so-called «Generation of the 1930s», acclaimed worldwide. However, his poetry has particularly attracted the attention of the intellectuals and public in Italy, and, interestingly enough, so have his plays. Ritsos’s work has been translated into Italian and the poet was awarded a number of International Prizes in Italy and travelled to the country for at least seven times between 1976 and 1990, visiting more than 20 places there. During his trips, either he wrote down notes, as if he kept a diary, with his impressions or he composed relevant verses on the spot. Three collections of poems came as a result of those verses Ritsos’ trips to Italy inspired him, which form the Italian Triptych. Nonetheless, not only did Ritsos draw inspiration from Italy but so did some contemporary Italian authors, who were particularly interested in his poetry and biography and incorporated several aspects of them into their work.

The title of this study, ‘the ghost behind the arras’, adapts Eliot’s metaphor (1917) for the latent presence of metre in free verse-poetry. In the work of nine major twentieth-century Greek poets (Cavafy, Seferis, Embiricos, Elytis, Gatsos, Ritsos, Sachtouris, Mastoraki, and Ganas), the predominant Modern Greek verse form, the ‘political verse’ (politikos stichos) can be seen as ‘the ghost behind the arras’. This study examines in some detail the ways in which each of these poets appropriates the inherited metre in new contexts and asks what they contribute to the understanding of each poet’s poetics. It will be argued that the most dominant ‘ghost’ is Palamas’ The Emperor's Flute (1910) mirroring the poets’ attempts to communicate their response to the demise of the ‘Great Idea’; but the latent appearances of the political verse in twentieth-century Greek poetry have many other dimensions also.

I focus more particularly on the theoretical perspective of Luce Irigaray and Judith Butler. Despite their different (or even rival) programmes, these thinkers emphasize the significance of mimesis and the theatre model respectively, in order to signal new ways to rethink (female) subjectivity. Borrowing on Sophocles’s conflictual universe in enacting two radically contradictory variations of “womanliness” (Ismene and Antigone), Ritsos puts forward the theatrical construction of (sexual) identity and raises significant issues which relate to the functioning of power. (In) between the world of appearances and the “real” one, this modern use of the theatre metaphor blurs the limits between truth and falsity of both gender categories and theatre itself. By presenting life as a form of performance and vice-versa, this paper argues, Ritsos dramatizes the committed writer’s inner crisis toward the quest of alternative configurations of identity – be it sexual, social, national, ideological, or aesthetic.

Despite the hero’s popularity in classical poetry, Herakles in Modern Greek poetry has attracted so far little scholarly attention. This chapter maps the presence of Herakles and investigates his role in Modern Greek poetry by focusing on the poetry of Constantine P. Cavafy (1863-1933) and Yiannis Ritsos (1909-1990), two world- renowned Modern Greek poets, whose work coincides with major political and social events of the troubled 20th century. From the British colonial Alexandria at the turn of the century to the islands of Leros and Samos under the Colonels’ Junta in the early 1970’s Herakles detached from his glorious mythical past undergoes various poetic transformations to cater for a wide range of poetic and/or political purposes.

Παράλληλα παρουσιάζεται ένα λανθάνον κείμενο του Ρίτσου υπέρ του Kαρυωτάκη που προέρχεται από τα «Ημερολόγιο ενός φθισικού», και δημοσιεύεται στον Παρατηρητή των Xανίων τον Mάρτιο του 1931.

On at least one of Plato's visits to the sparkling city of Syracuse, he must have visited its famed theater and taken in a tragedy or two. He may also have reflected, as he sat there on the marble seats and looked up occasionally to glimpse the Ionian Sea, that his own adventure resembled that of a tragic hero. It had shining ideals, noble goals, great risk, a bit of hubris, and would end in death, nearly for the philosopher himself, and senselessly for his protégé, Dion. This connection between philosophy and drama goes back farther than Plato, though. It has roots in the plays of Syracuse's Epicharmus and can be seen in the earliest intellectual history of Magna Graecia, where such thinkers as Pythagoras, Xenophanes, and Empedocles blended philosophy, poetry, and performance. Sicily and Southern Italy, in particular, seem to have inspired the kind of original ideas that defy disciplinary designation. This collection of essays from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including archaeology, classics, philosophy, and art history, offers a refreshing new outlook on the heritage of Western Greece.
