The Reception of Old English Poetry

This study explores the extra-academic success of The Battle of Maldon from the second half of the 20th century until the present time. The analysis constitutes the occasion to reconsider the main problems of the text, through the investigation of the poem’s reuse and rewriting. If on the one hand the modern reception of The Battle of Maldon is not comparable to the cultural impact of the revises and rewritings of other well-known Germanic medieval texts (such as Beowulf and the Nibelung cycle), on the other hand, however, its reworking and re-utilization show, since 1950s, original and interesting features. On a first level, the study focuses on the proleptic continuations by Tolkien and Borges, which endow The Battle of Maldon with an uncontested supremacy in the history of the contemporary reception of Germanic medieval texts; on a second level, the analysis investigates the numerous and variegated reworkings and quotations of the poem, which range from the historical novel to science fiction, from poetry to the more recent musical adaptations by heavy metal rock bands.

Questo studio vuole mettere in risalto la fortuna “extra accademica” della Battaglia di Maldon dalla metà circa del XX sec. fino ai nostri giorni e vuole, attraverso un’analisi della sua riutilizzazione e riscrittura, costituire l’occasione per ripensare i principali problemi del testo. Se pur non confrontabile, per presenza e intensità, all’impatto culturale raggiunto da altre attualizzazioni e riscritture di più noti testi medievali germanici – si pensi soltanto al Beowulf e al ciclo nibelungico – la rielaborazione e riutilizzazione della Battaglia di Maldon presenta dalla metà del secolo scorso caratteristiche interessanti e originali. Alle continuazioni prolettiche di Tolkien e Borges, che già da sole conferiscono alla Battaglia di Maldon un primato che non ha l’eguale nella storia della ricezione contemporanea di nessun altro testo medievale di area germanica, si aggiungono numerose e variegate rielaborazioni e citazioni che spaziano dal romanzo storico al romanzo fantascientifico, dalla poesia a più recenti adattamenti musicali da parte di gruppi “Heavy metal rock”.

Se presenta un análisis de las Cosmologías germánicas intentando mostrar elementos que eran coherentes a la tradición común de los pueblos germánicos, y elementos que se desarrollaron únicamente en las distintas regiones. Se muestra el desarrollo histórico de algunos elementos de la creencia germánica y se presenta una aproximación filológica a las fuentes.
