Bu makale, 19. yüzyıl Osmanlı Eğitim sisteminin Batıcılaşma siyaseti çerçevesinde dönüşümünü sorunsallaştırmakta ve Türk aydınlarının bu dönüşümü nasıl açıklamaya ve meşrulaştırmaya çalıştıklarını incelemektedir. Üç ana kategoride ele alınan bu açıklama modellerini eleştirel bir değerlendirmeye tabi tuttuktan sonra yazar alternatif bir açıklama modeli sunmaktadır.

Our study subject, city of Ayvalik is located south-end of Edremit Bay in the northern of Aegean Region of our country. The city became one of the most well-known settlement areas of Mediterranean coasts with its commercial activity and wealth, its cultural and intellectual level within the second part of 18th century and 19th century.  Riots occurred from time to time damaged to the development of the city where different religions, languages and races lived together. Playing an important role in War of Independence, significant changes were observed in economical and social structure of Ayvalik after war. Total 35,986 persons live in the city which consists of 16 quarters. In this study, the population of Beypazarı district is examined under the geographical point of view. To reveal the mutual relations of the population with its space geology, topography and soil maps, and meteorological station data of Beypazari were used. The results of the census conducted between 1927 and 2011 were used as basic data. Based on these data, the change of the population over the years, spatial distribution, density, age and sex structure, population movements (migrations), rural and urban characteristics are put forth, obtained results were evaluated with the help of tables and figures. The results of the study revealed that there were major structural changes in the population of Beypazari. It is determined that migrations under various natural environment conditions and socio-economic facts, caused important changes in the structure of the population in Beypazari. It had been examined causes and consequences of changes in the structure of population. In order to examine the population changes in Beypazari and to make a prediction of population in future, time-series analysis has been made. By comparing the results of analysis, the models that best describes the population are determined, and the estimation of population has been made by means of these models.

Ilk calismalar ordu ici calismalar olarak baslamis ve daha sonra akademide bir ilgi haline gelmistir. Bu calismada askeri sosyolojinin, sosyoloji disiplini icerisindeki kaynaklari, Ikinci Dunya Savasi oncesinde ve savasin hemen sonrasinda bir disiplin olarak gelismesi konu edilmistir. Kurumlasma dinamiklerini muteakip Soguk Savas ve Vietnam Savasi donemlerinde, askeri sosyolojide gundeme gelen yeni meseleler ele alinmis ve gunumuzdeki yonelim dikkat cekilmistir. Son olarak da Avrupa'da askeri sosyoloji calismalarinin tarihsel ve tematik seyri ele alinmistir.

This is a bibliographical study which focuses on the theme of utopia. This study which is organized as chronological consists of books, articles and thesis that has been written about utopia and utopianism in Turkey, Republican period. In this study it has been attempted to determine which disciplines interested in which period and which aspects of this theme We can say that literature with regard to utopia and distopia which has been called as modern utopia, has begun to appear after 1960s, especially in fields of literature, philosophy and architecture, in our country.

Crete is the second biggest island after Cyprus in East Mediterranen. Crete was being controlled by Venetians during the years when Ottoman's State found. After the conquery of Istanbul, Crete became the main target of Ottoman attacks. Althugh the sieges in the crown of Kanuni and Selim II did not resulted in precise victories, they assisted as important locations of the island being controlled. Finally in the first half of the 17 th century and after a long war which lasted approximately 25 years, Crete was conquered by Ottomans. Having earned its independency after Morea insurgonces with the assists of European states to acqure the island. One of the most important of these insurgances was Crete Revolution which lasted three years between 1865-1868. Mahmud Celaleddin Pasha's History of Crete Revolution which is about this revolution, is an important source. Mahmud Celaleddin Pahsa was part of Grand Vizier Ali Pasha's train in order to end the revolution in october 3, 1867. The author who stayed on the island for 5 months, is the witness of the incidents. This case shows us how important are what he wrote. The work has only one known copy consisted of 163 leafs, it informs us about the wars and negotiations with insurgents, European states strategies in this period, taken measures and military operations and was presented to Sultan Abdulhamid II.

: Western interest to oriental societies has developed after 16 th century. This interest has changed through the changes in the world politics and European domestic political issues. At the age of enlightenment that information of orient has seriously developed oriental social formations has been employed for the critics of aristocracy and church and interpreting the changes in European society. But since the social balance between aristocracy and bourgeoisie has changed and the western domination over world has been increased a hegemonic narration was arisen. Especially geographical, climatic and even racial differences have become a base of the explanation of occidental ‘dynamism' against oriental ‘stagnancy'. At the threshold of 19 th century orientalism has appeared for corresponding need for systematic knowledge about oriental world.

The present study deals with native language-centered arguments concerning the struggles of Turks in Germany reaching a population of 3 million, over 500 thousand of whom are students, to keep living with their cultural identities.  Language as bearer of culture constitutes the basis of issues of “integration” and “assimilation” between Turks in Germany and the Germany State. While Germany regards the teaching of its own language to immigrants as the most important phase of its policy of integration, Turks in Germany see it as a threat to the survival and reconstruction of their cultural identity that Turkish started to be spoken with fewer grammar rules after the second generation, that instruction in mother tongue is being phased out of schools, and that young people favor speaking German over their mother tongue Turkish. While spoken language of Turks in Germany may vary depending on different communication environments, efforts are being made for Turkish to be taught at state schools.

Lately Zygmund Bauman has been one of the most important thinkers that contributed to sociological theory. He is regarded as one of the most important postmodern society theorists with his effective critique of modernism. He owes his popularity to his critique of modernism. His critique especially focuses on the theory that enlightenment based progressionist world view of modernism has reached a deadlock. In other words, he announces the falling of “Modernism Project” based on “instrumental reason culture”. Postmodernist notion has been the most important intellectual background lately because modernism has broken its promise. Bauman has also directed his attention to postmodern perspective and the notion of “other”. He has probably given his attention to postmodernism not only for his own background but also for his testimony to the present age. In this article, Bauman  who is one of the most important actors, his critique of modernism and his postmodern position is analyzed and his intellectual curiosity as a sociologist is followed.

Culture cannot be reduced to religion even though religion is an important aspect of it. However, exceptionally, religion most usually is the first thing to come to the mind when Middle-Eastern societies are at stake. In a sense, the culture of all Middle- Eastern societies, including Turkey, is equated with Islam –a world religion currently echoing with “oppression” and “terrorism”. This paper explores what kinds of perceptions European young people have regarding religious life in Turkey. Additionally and more importantly, the paper questions if European youth’s perceptions of religious life in Turkish society get significantly changed after living in this society for about a year. The data for this paper comes from a qualitative/ethnographic research conducted to examine major effects of European Voluntary Service Program. Prior to the voluntary service, more or less a similar line of thinking on Islam is expected to be found among European young volunteers while a diversity of perceptions is anticipated to be arising from an experience of living in Turkey, a finding that would partially confirm the literature.
