Solidary Economy

This work is a case study in the realm of solidary economy social enterprise in Israel that targets marginalized populations and the social and geographic periphery. The Tarbut Movement (“culture” in Hebrew) is a non-profit national movement of pioneering young artists who reside and work as urban kibbutzim in weakened towns throughout Israel. Its mission is to use art and culture as a vehicle for self-empowerment and social change to reshape the future of Israel, promote values of social solidarity, equality, democracy and tolerance. They create and deliver innovative artistic, educational and cultural programs for disadvantaged populations across the spectrum of Israeli society. Ongoing initiatives include: The Ohel cooperative theatre; Local culture festivals; the Mobile Museum; Artwork Shops; All-Women Cabaret; LGBT+ Programs; the School for Art and Culture;
Youth Organization – through creative art, teenagers and children deal with current affairs like poverty and social inequality; problems of Israel democracy; exploitation and chauvinism; ethnic gaps. There are 5,000 teenagers and children active in the organization in grades 4 -12, in 25 towns across Israel. Youth Shnat Sherut is a post high-school year of community service before army with continuous guidance by older Tarbut members enlisting each year about 100 new members.
The Tarbut Movement is a paradigm of cultural bricolage. It integrates cultural artifacts with strong historical resonances: the classic Tarbut Movement from Eastern Europe Jewry; the kibbutz and the urban kibbutz; the youth movement; the pre-army service year and the commune; the historical cooperative theatre HaOhel.
It has been characterized as hypo modern: "the new development, that criticizes, opposes, investigates and examines postmodernism modestly, with a silent outcry and steadily increasing social ethic strength..."

A partir de uma revisão bibliográfica, contextualizou-se o surgimento da economia solidária no Brasil de acordo com o desenvolvimento da Política de Ciência e Tecnologia (PC&T) nacional, objetivando-se entender essa contextura. Infere-se que este surgimento ocorreu em meio a tendências de modelos internacionais de pesquisa e investimento que focavam tecnologias duras, com pouca consideração das
necessidades sociais, e que as universidades, envolvendo-se com o tema ao final de 1990, favoreceram o desenvolvimento de tecnologias sociais, potenciais ao combate da desigualdade econômica e social, aproximando-se da população e considerando seus conhecimentos. Espera-se que os resultados possam contribuir para reflexões quanto ao direcionamento de políticas e pesquisas.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit Formen alternativen Wirtschaftens und versucht, Kriterien und Typologien für “progressive” und “konformistische” Projekte zu identifizieren. Ziel ist die Erstellung von Kriterien für zivilgesellschaftliche Projekte, um die Umsetzung intendierter Ziele zu erleichtern und eine Vereinnahmung für andere Zwecke zu verhindern. Dabei geht es insbesondere um jüngere Initiativen, die vor einem weniger politischen Hintergrund entstehen als Projekte der 70er Jahre.
Aufbauend auf Karl Polanyis Arbeiten und jüngere Werke zum Thema ökologisch-soziale Transformation, leite ich zunächst die Kriterien der Profit- und Bedarfsorientierung, der ökologischen Gerechtigkeit, demokratischen Partizipation und gesellschaftlichen Wandels ab. Auf dieser Grundlage Vergleiche ich Formen von Projekten alternativen Wirtschaftens aus der Fachliteratur und zeitgenössische, in der Tagespresse als alternativ bezeichnete Projekte und nehme eine erste Bewertung nach den entwickelten Kriterien vor.
Ich schließe, dass die Bewahrung einer alternativen Wirtschaftsform von einer Vielzahl von Faktoren abhängt und Institutionen Lernprozesse durchmachen, die eine Erneuerung bedarfsorientierter Wirtschaftsformen ermöglichen. Als Gegenpol zur Planwirtschaft werden Märkte in der Öffentlichkeit unhinterfragt als positiv wahrgenommen, so dass die Gefahr besteht, dass progressive Errungenschaften in neuartigen Formen alternativer Wirtschaft verloren gehen. AkteurInnen sollten genaues Augenmerk auf die Gestaltung und Entwicklung von Projekten legen, damit die Intention nicht verkehrt wird. Des weiteren ist eine Doppelstrategie notwendig, die auf einen Wandel sowohl der Mikro- als auch der Makroebene ansetzt.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar as relações grupais existentes em uma Cooperativa de Catadores de Materiais Recicláveis, discutindo como a estruturação grupal pode contribuir para a autogestão e a sustentabilidade do empreendimento. Utilizou-se o método participativo e realizou-se um trabalho de campo com a técnica da observação participante. Os dados observados foram registrados em um diário de campo, organizados de acordo com os elementos estáticos e dinâmicos de estruturação grupal e confrontados com os princípios da economia solidária. Observou-se que os cooperados novos não conheciam esses princípios e que os mais antigos em geral os conheciam, porém nem sempre os praticavam ou compartilhavam seus conhecimentos. Isto dificulta a identificação do sujeito com o empreendimento e com o grupo, o qual pode se fragilizar. Algumas alternativas para superar esta dificuldade são apresentadas.

Abstract: The article aims to analyze the concepts of global fashion industry, solidarity economy and fair trade. For this discussion, the research will use theoretical references such as Paul Singer, Lilyan Berlin and Pierre W. Johnson. The proposal is to analyze how fashion and fair trade can act to promote social inclusion, using the fashion brand People Tree as an example.

Resumo: O objetivo é analisar os conceitos de indústria de moda global, economia solidária e comércio justo. Os referenciais teóricos serão Paul Singer, Lilyan Berlim e Pierre W. Johnson. A proposta é analisar como a moda e o comércio justo podem atuar para promover a inclusão social, usando como exemplo a marca de moda People Tree.

On June 24th and 25th, 2015, the CCC research group, as member of the Ghent Centre for Global Studies, the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Peru) and the Red Muqui – Proposal and Action Network (Peru) organized an international conference on “Social Struggles for Land in Latin America: An Historical, Comparative and Global Perspective” at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, in the city of Lima. The conference aimed to create a more profound dialogue between researchers, institutions, social organizations and rural communities, between historical and contemporary perspectives, and between comparative (cases of different countries) and global views, on change and continuity in rural Latin America.

A economia solidária começou a aparecer no Brasil na década de 1980, quando os índices inflacionários e de desemprego estavam altos. Ela estimulou a organização de trabalhadores em cooperativas para recuperarem as empresas em que trabalhavam e que haviam falido, e assim, manterem seus postos de trabalho. Os catadores de materiais recicláveis surgiram no Brasil pela exclusão social a que parte da população foi submetida, em torno da década de 1950, e começaram a se organizar em cooperativas pela necessidade de continuar trabalhando, após a proibição de catar nos aterros sanitários e lixões. Esta organização ocorreu em parceria com o poder público, instituições religiosas, ONGs e universidades, dentre outros apoiadores. Atualmente, observa-se que as cooperativas de catadores não são compostas somente de ex-catadores de aterros e lixões, mas também de outros trabalhadores vítimas do desemprego em épocas atuais. Para a organização dos empreendimentos econômico-solidários, é necessário que os catadores se apropriem de conhecimentos necessários sobre a natureza do empreendimento e sobre o desenvolvimento do trabalho. É preciso também que sejam realizadas adaptações sociotécnicas (AST) para o desenvolvimento de tecnologias sociais (TS) que possibilitem seu desenvolvimento e sustentabilidade. Esse processo, que influencia na forma de organização do empreendimento dependendo de como ocorrer, necessita da realização de parcerias entre os diversos atores envolvidos no movimento da economia solidária. A consideração de vários saberes em busca de uma produção científica e tecnológica adequada que beneficie a população de fato, vai ao encontro do campo de pesquisa ciência, tecnologia e sociedade (CTS). Considerando que a inclusão econômico-social e o trabalho influenciam na vida do indivíduo e que a economia solidária com seus valores (solidariedade, liberdade individual, distribuição de renda de forma igualitária, organização cooperativa ou associativa do trabalho e autogestão) propõe uma nova forma de organização do trabalho, além de propiciar a inclusão econômico-social, tem-se como objetivo investigar as influências das relações de trabalho econômico-solidárias na dinâmica familiar dos catadores. O método utilizado é o da história oral, e foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas para coletar relatos sobre a vida dos grupos familiares dos catadores, que são membros de uma cooperativa econômico-solidária localizada na cidade de São Carlos-SP, a COOPERVIDA. As entrevistas foram transcritas e após ocorreu a validação dos dados pelos entrevistados, pelo processo de transcriação. Após essa validação, os dados transcritos foram analisados pela técnica da análise de conteúdo. Antes das entrevistas, foi realizado um trabalho de campo no empreendimento com a utilização da técnica da observação participante, visando compreender como ocorrem as relações internas de trabalho e como a economia solidária e as relações de trabalho cooperativistas permeiam o ambiente. Dentre os resultados, podemos citar a carência de AST que contribuam para a organização dos processos de trabalho no empreendimento; que os princípios econômico-solidários permeiam as relações na cooperativa, mas não totalmente; que existe uma demanda de capacitação de novos cooperados para que adquiram conhecimentos sobre o trabalho; que as famílias apresentaram influências das relações de trabalho econômico-solidárias na dinâmica familiar, organizando sua rotina de forma igualitária e solidária; e que mesmo sem conseguir definir o que é economia solidária, os catadores e famílias desenvolveram comportamentos permeados por seus princípios. Indica-se a necessidade de desenvolver políticas estatais de economia solidária, incluindo-se a família nos programas e ações realizados. Palavras-chave: Economia solidária. Starting from the idea that the logic of the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy follows the development of the concept of what science is, and using as parameter for analysis the phases in which this development was divided from the Post-War period, in the mid-twentieth century, to the present time, this work aims to take outcomes from a quantitative research of theses and dissertation productions on the theme of the recyclable material pickers, considering the terms “picker” and “recyclable” related to other specific ones (co-operative, solidary economy, family and mental health). For its development it has been used the Bank of Theses and Dissertations of the Coordination of Higher Education Personnel Improvement, via the search option "subject" and the definition "all terms". From the searching result, data have been analyzed and then it could be demonstrated the evolution of the productions per year as well as the multidisciplinarity related to the theme due to different types of Graduate Programs involved. It has been observed that works on the general theme
(represented by the terms “picker” and “recyclable” both combined), detected since 1996 and combined with the specific themes, began to be registered in combination with the specific since 1999, coinciding with the transition to the current XXI century context, called "Science For Society’s Welfare", a concept still under construction. It has also been possible to associate the period of onset of the theses and dissertations with these terms to important moments on the development of the
history of the pickers, the solidary economy movement and the Brazilian Science and Technology Policy. It is hoped that the results of this study may serve as a guide and database for future researches, as well as enhance reflections on this scientific moment which coincides with a growing pursuit of social welfare.

Relatamos aqui uma pesquisa de campo prospectiva que objetivou mapear atores, ações e relações sociais que configuram a Economia Solidária da Zona Sul da cidade de São Paulo. Para isso, conduzimos treze oficinas de Mapeamento Participativo nas quais os participantes localizaram no mapa da região 150 atores sociais, incluindo coletivos informais, associações civis, cooperativas e entes estatais. A metodologia de Análise de Redes Sociais possibilitou identificar, entre os atores sociais, a presença de mais de 200 conexões e vinte conectores sociais que atuam como protagonistas territoriais, promovendo relações solidárias e desenvolvendo ações públicas nas áreas da cultura, educação, saúde, segurança alimentar, assistência social e gestão de resíduos urbanos. Realizamos por fim uma interpretação coletiva dos mapas e diagramas que permitiu compreender como pessoas e associações civis criam redes de relações solidárias, organizam ações coletivas com caráter social e econômico e, finalmente, como algumas práticas sociais são propagadas pelo território. / We reported here a field research that aimed to map actors and social relations that characterize the solidarity Economy of the South Zone of the city of São Paulo. We conducted thirteen Participative Mapping workshops in which participants located 150 social actors on the map of the region, including informal collectives, civil associations and state entities. Te methodology of Social Network Analysis made it possible to identify, among social actors, the presence of more than 200 connections and twenty social connectors who act as territorial protagonists, promoting solidary relations and developing public actions in the areas of culture, education, health, food security, social assistance and urban waste management. Finally, we carried out a collective interpretation of maps and diagrams that demonstrate how people and civil associations create networks of solidarity relations, organize collective actions with a social and economic character, and finally, how some social practices are propagated throughout the territory.

Exchange is a condition for the reproduction. Production and consumption, mediated by distribution and by exchange, are inseparable spheres as states Karl Marx in Introduction to the Political Economy Critic (2008). Identifying and analyzing the exchange forms in the Solidary Economy and its relation with the space produced by capitalism brings to us a new understanding possibility about the social reproduction conditions. The objective of the text is to develop a critical analysis of the conditions of the exchange forms reproduction of the Solidary Economy, especially of the commerce and solidary consumption.

This paper asks to what extent urban agriculture projects based on principles of Solidarity Economics are in a position to develop new economic forms based on solidarity—rather than competition—thereby posing an alternative model to neo-liberal capitalism. It seeks to understand how solidarity economies function concretely, what motivations, interests and goals move people to establish and participate in such initiatives, and what utopias they associate with such projects. It focuses on the Swiss gardening cooperative ortoloco, which can be defined as a peri-urban organic farm organised on principles that go beyond the supply of food to embrace explicit political aims and to realise an alternative economic model. For two years of existence, ortoloco has successfully applied these principles on its economic practice, but also constantly questioned them and developed them further. Extending the diversity of products and activities, and intensifying practical and theoretical cooperation with similar projects, the activists hope to apply the tested models on an ever-broader range of economic activities and spheres of living together in general. Whilst neo-liberal policies are presented almost worldwide as natural and without alternative, these projects are living proof that other ways of thinking and acting are possible.
